@s1earle has always been "overrated" - and always will be. The man is a magician. Have you listened to his Schumann? Anyway, he certainly knows, or knew, enough about how to play the German romantic composers to put him far out of the reach of any criticism that you or I could seriously level. I for one am infinitely thankful he didn't stay to the Schubert dances...
@The1saracen He plays the difficult Beethoven Sonatas so dreadfully that I threw his collection to the scrap - his playing of Schumann also sucks esp when any playing is a bit hard for his lacking technique...yes, he never stayed to the Schubert dances but tried his hand(s) to the simple Beethoven and Bach pieces, just as well!
@The1saracen Backhaus' Decca recording is the greatest set and takes pride of place amongst the others - his insight runs past the technical achievements and is simply amazing!
Seems like the playing one would expect from a lacking and unprepared student...Never distinct in execution or insight.

Kempff has always been overrated; he should have stayed to the Schubert dances in his/their lightweight flurry...

Yep, same tempo all the time, the rest are who change the tempo :-) .
For me Kempf is the best Brahms ever.

Katchen is perfection as a pianist but Kempff is the man who convinces.Style is the man!
