1939 begannen zwei jüdische Flüchtlinge aus Berlin ihre Karriere als Inhaber des Jazz-Labels Blue Note mit einer Aufnahme von Sidney Bechet. Möglich, dass sie Bechet 1930 in Berlin kennengelernt hatten.

Das ist Musik von Friedrich Holaender (ab 07:25 am Flügel zu sehn): »Ich lass mir meinen Körper schwarz bepinseln und fahre nach den Fidschi-Inseln«, »Lass mich Deine Carmen sein!«. Der Fil heißt »Einbrecher«.

Übrigens: »Mit dem Flugzeug nach London oder nach Amerika!«, das muss damals ein völlig ausgeflippter Gedanke gewesen sein.

@shesogucci Well, actually in Germany the situation is a bit different, first of all belongs it to the Haus Vaterland decoration, secondly it is in absense of a negro population a very positive ethno connotation. Libertinage, back to the nature, romanticism, very German. Bechet expressed that Europe suited him better than the US for racism reasons. Bechet developed a very coital style that borrowed a lot from expressionism.

Well, I once saw a photograph of Friedrich Holländer just dressed up like the band members in this movie and his face was black. Is he by any chance the bandleader (you see him most of the time from behind) in this clip. Or was what I saw just a publicity still?

Mike McKendrick ist der Banjospieler, mit dem sich Bechet am 20.12.1928 um die Mittagszeit (!) in Paris auf offener Strasse wegen eines Disputs über einen Harmoniewechsel duellierte! Beide fassten 15 Monate, wurden nach 11 Monaten entlassen und musizierten danach wieder miteinander, wie in diesem Film dokumentiert.

Wirklich wunderschöne Szene!Auch wenn sich leider noch (oder wieder) viel rechtes Geschmeiß unter uns tümmelt,glaube ich, dass sich gerade was die kulturelle Vielfalt angeht,schon viel getan hat.Kommt nach Berlin und schaut in die Bars und Clubs, Galerien, etc. ! Was hier an internationalem Austausch stattfindet ist wunderschön. Allerdings muss ich zugeben, dass mir der Jazz lieber ist, als der Elektro der die Welt (u.a.) nun hierher lockt. Und zweifellos hatten die goldenen 20er mehr Stil!

@mrbable oh ja DIE hatten stil!und vielmehr noch als zur selben zeit am broadway. ich geh sogar soweit zu sagen, das HIER das kulturelle zentrum der welt war!leider nicht lang, denn es wurde stück fürstück"vernichtet". und von diesem schock hat sich deutschland leider immer noch nicht erholt, und daswird glaubich noch lang lang so sein (wenn man sich im fernsehen so umschaut)...

Hatten die UFA-Leute eigentlich irgendeine Vorstellung davon, was das für ein fantastischer Kultur-Austausch war ?

.... bezeichnend und zu erwartend, nach 1933 wurde dieser (gesamte) Film verboten - Originalton der NS-Presse: "Verherlichtum des dekadenten jüdischem Niggerjazz".... diese Leute hatten keine Ahnung....

Die Originalkopie des Filmes ward verloren - eine Fassung fand sich im Moskau´er Filarchiv - nur so überlebte dieser Film die Nazizeit.... welch ein Glück !!!

.. sowohl die Menschen damals, als auch wir heute leben in einer EXTREMEN Zeit - du hast vollmomen recht, diese Szene ist viel mehr dokumentarisch gegenüber der Zeit als es einfach nur eine Szene eines Spielfimes sein mag - schade um DIESE guten Seiten bevor der Wahnsinn regierte, - und hoffen wir das wir für die Zukunft daraus etwas gelernt haben - nötig wäre es.... liebe Grüße

@odysseetheater Der Film folgt einem Coon-Schema. Die Dekoration vom Haus Vaterland ist ja auch scharf. Natürlich ist das alles harmlos und netter Unterhaltungskrams. Solche "Negerball" Dekoration brauchte man auch im Reich.

@bimhimbim na ich find aber die stimmung schon exzessivst, das ist schon ziemlich nah am ausflippen. die dekoration mag ja brauchbar gewesen sein, aber diese herrschaften haben das schon ordentlich mit leben "gefüllt".und das COON schema... das kenn ich gar nicht,,. gibts da was drüber zu lesen oder ist das deine interpretation?

"Einbrecher" ist die folgende Pommer-Produktion nach "Die 3 von der Tankstelle" - der Produzent wollte an die "Tankstelle" anknüpfen - wenn ich nicht gewusst hätte das diese Szene kommt - ich hätte abgeschalet.....

Die Harvey sah, nichts des trotz jemals besser aus..... selbst ohne Sidney Bechet.... ;)

Great film clip with Bechet playing hot in the beginning. Also very interesting near the end of the film clip I hear Bechet playing a waltz like Mary Lou number on soprano sax. I am used to hearing Bechet play hot jazz and blues. This is unusual to hear him playing this waltz like number. This is one of the best film clips I have ever seen on youtube! 5 stars and a definite favorite!

Great clip. Bachet was very good at the continental-viennese-schmaltz and played it like an angel. Look out for a recording of him playing 'Song of Songs' You still find some traditional bands in the UK (with multi-reed frontlines) play some of these sweeter and less hot items.
