45 years later, I still feel the guilt! I was sitting in the upper deck off third base, watching Chico Ruiz steal home off Art Mahaffey. The collapse, my fault. Tried to rally in the 9th; Wes Covington doubled...speedy rookie Adolfo Phillips ran for him but was stranded on third when Ruben Amaro struck out. Now it's Sept 29, 08...are we about to see a repeat?
Read the Novel, '64 Intruder, by Gregory T. Glading. In this novel a fan is transported back to that fateful 21 Sept night, and prevents the Ruiz steal of home by throwing a whiskey bottle on the field. Then you can read how it changes history. The novel is now a bit dated, but still a great read.
the plate is to risk stealing home. The odds are much greater that this Hall of Famer could muster up a hit. However something told Ruiz that he could make it on Mahaffey and Chico took off for home. It was close but the ump signaled safe. They say if Ruiz doesn't make it he might as well keep walking because manager Fred Hutchinson would have given Ruiz his walking papers! The Reds went on to win 1-0 and this was the start of the ten game losing streak. The shock that started it all???
The 10 game losing streak all started with an event that shocked the hell out of the Phillies and may have been the underlying cause for their losing streak and eventual collapse. The Phils were in Cincinnati and were engaged in a scoreless tie with the Reds. Chico Ruiz was on third base, not sure how many were out. I believe Art Mahaffey was on the mound. Think it was the eight or ninth inning. The immortal Frank Robinson was at the plate. One thing you do not do with this great hitter at
After reading books about the Athletics and Shibe Park, I wonder what would have happened if Charlie Finlay had raised his hand sooner and kept them in Philly. Not two great runs, but three? By Saam becoming more of a national voice? A Yanks-A's rivalry(what with the Turnpike and New Jersey Transit-bye, Red Sox)? The whole sports culture radically different? The city's? I'll stick with the Phillies because there's nothing like a contender, or champion, on your home soil, but(sigh).

Biggest choke in baseball up until the Yankees in '04. But I wasn't that disapointed since the Cardinals came out to win it with their youngsters like Bob Gibson, Lou Brock and Curt Flood. Mantle and Maris were just no match for the Cards in '64.
but the Phils choked going to the World Series..Mets choke was only for divisional title..that makes The Phils choke far worse in my mind..i know..my dad and i had WS tix that summer..it took the city decades to recover..in every way from that tragic September fall after such a magical summer Bunning's perfect game..Cllison's All Star game winnig HR.....far worse...Mets choke last year did'nt change the culture and feel of a city at all...this one did..and it lasted till 1980....
did'nt happen....i lived this '64 collapse...can truly say at the age of 12 it was a life altering event...Philly has never been n the same sports wise
The "palatial new home" was a dump called Veteran's Stadium.

1. Gene Mauch panicked!
2. Philllies panicked!

Oh okay my mistake but the gist of my story was how someone could try to steal home wiith the immortal Frank Robinson at the plate!

Bill Veck tried to buy the A's with the notion of stocking the roster with Negro League greats. Imagine if he could've pulled that one off!

At the end the announcer refers to the just-being-completed Veterans Stadium as a "palacial new home."
He actually meant to say "an oversize concrete tiolet bowl, like so many others being built in the early 70s."

Branch Rickey would have seen a much sadder spectacle had he seen my 2007 Mets collapse. The '64 Phillies are off the schneid!
