To this day this is the most amazing race ive ever seen. I have raced standerdbred horses and have been 80-1 or worse 3 times and won and those were non winners. This was the breeders cup folks! Like winning the belmont with a mule!
Jerry Bailey was one of the biggest big money riders there were. It saddens me to see them give eclipse awards to jocks who accumulate claiming winsand very few graded stakes wins like they did to Ramon Dominguez.
"I couldn't even understand the instructions in the paddock" and "I can't even pronounce his name" have got to be two of the funniest quotes from a winning jockey I've ever heard.
When Ibn Bey ran 2nd to Unbridled in 1990, I figured a Euro moght win eventually, plus back then I used to bet Bailey blind when he you could get him at a price pre-Cigar. U need luck in horse racing and I got lucky then.
Maybe the easiest BC Classic winner of all time. Looking back at the replay he was asked to run maybe 3/16 of a mlie Excellent strategy by Bailey to save as much ground as possible, get covered up and see what U got in the lane. I'm biased. I bet 5WPS and got back 865.00 in my first trip ever to Cali. I loved it then and will love it always.
What a play and what a win. Bailey rode this horse like a true Euro stayer...allowed him to stay covered up early and stayed the inside route. The waters did part for him at the head of the stretch, and had the horse to his outside not tire and drift out, it would have been Bertrando all the way...I think this year's Classic might be won by a Euro who pulls a similarly sneaky move...
I remember Arcangue's jockey Jerry Bailey had a smile on his face during the post parade like 'I am going to win it!' and he did! What a year(1993) for Mr. Bailey, in addition to this, he won the KY Derby with Sea Hero at double-digit odds!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Durkin never had a great call in his life. Man is hopeless.

I do have a question, what were the exotics like in this race?

133-1 Even if he is a fairgrounds horse how could that even be? Wow what an upset!!

Six weeks before this race, this horse beat ARAZI by six lengths in a Euro stakes on the grass. Bailey at 133-1 should have sent up an alarm.
Damn.

@eajinabi My late Mom began betting Bailey almost blindly in 1982 at Gulfstream, when no one knew who he was. Used to cash a ton.
