This was composed by a young contemporary Finnish composer, Mikko Sidoroff. The "style" of this music is NOT Byzantine, but in the post-Romantic Western musical tradition. Just like any sung music in a Roman Catholic church is not Gregorian chant, neither is all Orthodox music Byzantine.
@EverythingZen, So, what you are saying is because YOU, as a westerner, don't like the sound of the ancient and well loved melodies that have served the church and the faithful for thouasands of years with no one really complaining about it, should be changed because it doesn't fir into what you consider a local church? This style of chant has been around long before you, and will last long after you are gone.
I know enough about bysanthine music and i must correct my self that Bysanthine and greek church music can be pretty when its sang in greek but we have some people in Finland Who have started to translate it in Finnish and that is horrible.
I sort of agree, in that i have this feeling that byzantine greek music should not be forced upon us westerners, but, it is better than nothing. The Church here is still young, and so i'm just glad it's here.
Lots of choirs in finland can sing like this. And I Personally Know this Mikko Sidoroff. This is so much better than Byzanthine and greek churhc music!!!
greetings..i have heard a choir in kiev...it wa amasing..i felt that angels came there and were singing!!!really i felt like flying!
but really..u havent heard byxzantine from a good choir in greece...u r always welcome..and then u will feel like being united with universe!!friendly!!!
In your opinion. My friend remember that this is music like that of the Greek, Japanese, or Ethiopian churches in the service of the divine. Yes, this is wonderful music; the point is to glorify God and he hears us no matter how me sing.
I must admit that it took a while for my western ears to get used to the eastern byzantine musical style when I found Orthodoxy. It sounds so very dark and depressing until you get used to it - at least, it sounded that way to me for a while. I really would like to see our English liturgical texts here in America to become standardized and for the music to have more of a local sound that actually compliments English rather than forces itself upon the language.
I wouldnt call it better or worse, just different. I think it would be interesting to combine the musical traditions of east and west to create something unique.
Wow! Thank you (kiitos!) so much for posting these videos!
I attended this very performance, and as the video attests, it was absolutely exquisite. Btw, you must have been sitting quite close to where my husband and I were seated!
