well to answer everyone's question this song is about the struggles of reconstruction after the civil war... with that said there was several vigilante groups that sprung up in the south... the reason they came up because of voting rights of blacks and ex confederates.... alot of northern people was "placed" in the senate and house of the ex confederate states... a lot of ex confederates blamed the federal government... but the short answer is no its not about the KKK just wiki reconstruction

I'm from Kentucky. "Southern Pride." Even though KY didn't secede, we bled at shiloh, vicksburg, murphreesboro, chickamauga, and all through the Georgia campaign, I ain't gonna hang for it, but Kentuckians after 50 yrs (The 1960's) are (slowly) coming to terms with our previous valor. I'm sure my southern relatives are proud of the Kentuckian MOH recipient from Afghanistan. Even though he is already forgotten nationally, Southern remembrance is most important.

This song is not only beautiful but it is also historically accurate since while the Confederate soldiers fought with honor and chivalry in the field of battle the Unionists pillaged and burned in every occasion. When General Lee (God bless him) was marching towards Gettysburg deep in northern territories the army of Northern Virginia didn't caused any destruction but when Sherman entered Dixie we all know what happened
