i studied Aikido for 3 years in college, first traditional aikido then Tomiki. My experience is this...that Aikido is effective in certain scenarios but is limited. Tomiki is good as you get the randori experience in learning how the techniques are applied in real life to some degree. It is also most effective against someone who doesn't know the martial arts for the most part.. If someone is trained in a grappling art you are screwed.

Once, this classmate of mine grabbed me from behind and all i did was to release the grip, push him with my body while leaving a heel for him to trip, and bam! He fell like 2 metres away, and i was like "dude, that was cool!" Shows that aikido is effective!

Aikido is a bit boring, and nobody is gonna say in a fight " hey m8 let me give you my hand so you can make a nice armbar with it" :)

so how do you win? I see judges on a lot of these, but it looks (for the most part) very set piece - except the knife stuff. Are there actual aikido competitions that score points based on takedowns, submissions, etc.?

Just unrealistic as a plausible martial art. Dont watch the defenders, watch the attackers; they are so static and unrealistic. Real attacks/violence doesnt work like that! Such a middle-class perception of 'using appropriate delf-defense against would-be attackers'. Dont rely on this to work in reality

aikido is not a sport... remember we do not initiate an attack... how can an aikidoka attack another aikidoka if they are both waiting to neutralize an attack. another thing aikido uses joint locks (breaks). how can you finish the opponent if you just evade. you need to make a contact. well we use atemis but their main use is just to outbalance or distract the attacker. Remember we rely on their weight, motion, force to neutralize their own aggressiveness... we are in harmony guyz.

Everyone who does a martial art thinks theirs is the best. This is a competition of demonstrations not fights against one another. Judo, BJJ, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, boxing all have real comp fights against themselves and each other. All the real life fighters are in UFC not the demonstration ones. Come on fellas, the only way you're gonna get better or get respect is to step into the ring! Don't waste all that training on false hope.

everyone that insult aikido as the soft martial art. they should try tomiki aikido and do some competition. when u try to counter the locks. However, I bet any style of aikido can beat any martial art. It depends on the person you fight with. Some STUPID people say taht they have beaten an aikidoka and that's why it is a shit. Fight against a sensei, not a new aikidoka

I was invited to fight a sensei. I practiced Wado-Karate for 11 years before and humbly requested a personal demonstration; there wasn't a thing he could do.

This is not because Aikido fails, it's because every one of their dojo always refuses to put it's students in aggressive fights. The ones where the attacker resists, never lets up, and you can end up with a broken nose if you slip up.

You'll need a good partner to help you out with that, because they won't let you.

Just a small side note for the people saying this tanto randori shit isn't real.....That's because it isn't. IT'S A GAME! with very particular rules that restrict a lot of real world scenarios. Training for tanto randori and real life self defense are very different

Actually; he's right on the money. What is shown here is fucking horrible half-assed judo style crappling. Not a single one of the amazing techniques we see in any aikido demonstration are shown during live bouts; wonder why? Reason; they don't fucking work. Secondly, every one of those idiots going up against someone weilding what is presumably a fake knife got stabbed. I'm laughing my ass off; this should be enough to deter anyone from taking gaykido.

Kata tournaments are judged by senior practitioners of this style, based on quality and accuracy of techniques. Decisions are taken by vote of majority among 3 or 5 referees.

This is Tomiki, right? How do they decide if the attack succeeds? Judge call? Pressure sensor on top of the tanto? Something else?

If tanto is bent, and the attackers posture is correct, he scores 1 point. You can not convert tanto strikes into punches. Other than that, opponent is allowed to use variations of 17 basic randori techniques. A very significant throw counts as an ippon (4 points), a significant balance break or a weak throw is a wazaari (2 points), and a weak balance break or some few rubbish throws may give a Yuko (1 point). Fouls give negative points.

Yea!..That's almost what it really looks like in battle! Nothing fancy or flashy. Notice the knife attacks! Looked like almost everyone got stuck. That should make a person humble. These competitions are what is needed to test yourself and find weaknesses. Good stuff.

im from spain , i practice the aikido from o sensei. he explicity say , aikido CANT do competition. Tomiki aikido is between judo and aiki-jutsu

Really, b/c if you read the doctrine it doesn't actually say that. The head of the world is actually a 5th dan in Aikikai.

Read the scrolls yourself, any thing directly from the scrolls I ever seen can be misinterpreted that way, but what it is saying is we should have violence. Most people lump competition into that. We do these out of expanding ourselves, and coming together as brothers.

This is only clips from the World Games. If you practice aikido you use a variety of different attacks, so there is punches involved and kicks. Also Bokken's (wooden swords) and Jo's (wooden staffs) are the two primary training weapons. I don't think you know much about aikido. Why bother commenting? It isn't choreographed either unless its Open kata & this is when you make up a kata using techniques from other katas or a set koryu

Nice video, I'm a fan! however the calls made by the ref's were wrong. It clearly shows the stab made at 2:14 in the video wasn't the right call. Oh well, I won the match anyway.

And sometimes a wrong call works in your favour. Refs are not machines, they have a split second to make a decision. But it all balances out in the end. It doesn't really matter whether you lose or win. It only matters to the ego. Particularly to a BAA ego.

Ah, I watched it again and you're right there were a few toshu clips. It would be great if people started making general Shodokan Aikido highlight videos rather than of specific events. There's tons of them out there for Judo and I think it would really help get the word out for Aikido if there were similar ones.
