I don't like making it voluntary because then you would have people with god complexes and you would just hope they were anti-government god complexes rather than justice dolling ones.
I think maybe we should just make the punishment for deciding not to be a juror a small one
so most people would choose to do their duty but if you REALLY don't want to, just pay a fine and get out lol
The Ecumenical and Interfaith church, Peaceful Assembly Church (860 Main St., Grafton, NH, 03240, 603-523-7111), takes the position that each and every Juror should be Fully Informed of his and her Rights and Responsibilities, at least in part because, it is in keeping with the teachings of both Jesus and the Buddha. Those teachings involve both mercy and compassion.
I am currently reading Lysander Spooner's Essay on Trial By Jury by Spooner. I was hooked by the 1st page! No, wait! I was actually hooked by the Title of the book itself called... "Let's ABOLISH Government"! Sounds like an AWESOME IDEA to me! ;-)
We need a hot asian girl to jump up and down on a trampolene describing the power of Jury Nullification in order for Boobus Americanus to take two seconds to listen to and absorb its implication. Americans are intellectually lazy and generally dumb. They are minimally roused at the moment due to the increase in the cost of gas - though they have no desire to study the real reason for its rise - (monetary inflation, supply/demand imbalances and geo-political instability.)

Thank you sir for stereotyping me and just about everyone I know. Thank you for pointing out that the reasons for the rise of gas. Something that I don't read all about everyday in the papers and see idiots talk about all day in the media, and hear colbert talk to himself about on his show. We are all idiots and we've never helped another country in need. Not once... You are ignorant, and where are you from?
I was unaware that Colbert points out that credit expansion by the Federal Reserve is responsible for massive misallocations of wealth resulting in the business cycle. I thought the papers and the talking heads on TV blamed speculators, oil companies and a lack of regulation for the rise in gas prices. Where did I get that idea?
Incidentally, (and to the point of my comment), how many Americans do you think know about Jury Nullification? 5%? It is not stereotyping if it is true.
You do have a point. Some Americans are dumb, as a matter of fact, some Indonesians are dumb, as well as some Russians, and Germans. It's not fair to classify in that sense. I do agree that there is an overwhelming amount of uneducated people arising, I think its largely due to a consumer mentality that media has pounded into America. This could be viewed as an advantage to the business hegemons, or perhaps a disatvantage to others. In anycase we are all ignorant if we don't have front row seets
Yes, there are dumb Indonesians. However, as we are speaking about America, Indonesia and the intellectual curiosity or lackthereof of her inhabitants is not our concern. My original post called many Americans "Boobus Americanus." The quote comes from HL Menken's "Notes on Democracy." I would encourage anyone interested in a good read to pick it up. It is available online for free in .pdf.
"Democracy is also a form of worship. It is the worship of Jackals by Jackasses." H. L. Mencken
This is indeed great! I do agree that we need to have more these videos here. It may sound kinda anti to everything liberty stands for but we do need some kind of meritocracy in deciding the presidency. Otherwise, why do we have deal so much of antagonism with a candidate like Ron Paul? He seems so obvious a choice.
if you get called up for jury duty, don't let them know you know about your rights (and duties) as a juror.
it is perverse, but they will dismiss you if you let them know that you know your rights as a juror.
as a juror you can save lives by refusing to join a guilty verdict in cases where a defendant is being tried for an unconstitutional law (e.g. drug law)
The FIJA (Fully Informed Jury Association) is still around and working on this issue. Check them out before your next jury summons. Also, as stated in the intro, Congress doesn't even read bills before voting, which is why jury oversight is important. You can support the "Read the Bills Act" at DownsizeDC dot org.
Wow!! Ron Paul! Another piece of the puzzle. Ron Paul, Ron Paul. Educating us poor mortals. If you don't know about the power of a jury, watch these vids. Even if you do watch them! Wow! Ron Paul, Ron Paul, Ron Paul, Ron Paul!!!!!!!!!!!!!
