  • Bob Altemeyer exposed these right-wing authoritarians in the 50s. The GOP and conservative movement are MUCH MORE VISIBLY FRINGE than ever before! Just imagine how much MORE authoritarian conservatism has gotten since then.

You can't deny this. Most authoritarians are attracted to conservatism. Most conservatives tend to be authoritarian at their cores. This is a simple fact verified by research. Conservatives, by and large, want to CONTROL people, or at least love control and order.

  • Conservatives, especially social conservatives, are much more authoritarian. However economically "liberal" Mussolini and Hitler may have been (as Jonah Goldberg claims), they were CONSERVATIVE at heart. Think about it. Fascism is simply economic conservatism gone wild. The corporations basically run the state, and boards of directors modeled after the corporate management structure run the various industries, not the people or democratically-elected reps.

  • Extremist conservatives tend to be racists. Extremist conservatives make up groups like al Qaeda. It's extreme conservatives who bomb abortion clinics. Yes, there are extreme liberals, but they usually strive more for an end to occupation and control by OUTSIDE powers, not wanting to control and suppress others. Any talk of a "thought police" or "nanny-state" on the Left is NOTHING compared to what the far Right wants to do to control and suppress people in every country.

  • It was extreme conservatives who held women down all throughout history and denied them the right to vote until 1920. Extremist conservatives promote homophobia and hatred of just about anyone who doesn't fit their narrow worldview. At one point it was blacks. At another point it was the disabled ("feeble-minded", anyone?). Another time it was women. Yet again it was gays and sexual minorities. On and on and on.

Conservatism is a mild form of insanity, really.

  • Conservatives can be seen OVER AND OVER projecting their own deepest thoughts and fears on their political opponents. I see it so often, esp. nowadays. Religious Right assholes bitching about environmentalists using language that BRILLIANTLY describes themselves! "environmentalists use bad science" And what do creationists do? Intelligent Design people? "Environmentalists scare children for their own political ends" And just what do extreme christian parents do?? come on

  • You never hear about self-hating straight Democrats. It's only self-hating and/or self-denying gays who pretend to be straight FROM THE RIGHT. It happens over and over. The culture of the Right on gay rights promotes otherwise conservative folks to hide who they are on sexuality in order to "fit in" and fool themselves into being something they're not. Then the pressure of hiding becomes too great, and they get caught revealing their true selves. But instead of admitting they're gay...

  • Chewbaca1989 is nothing but a troll. Don't dignify his nonsense with a response.

  • A sad far-right delusional troll who probably has a small penis and is overcompensating

  • The Religious Right is just a bunch of control freaks, as Max Blumenthal well-documents in his book Republican Gomorrah. Why else would they want to take away everyone else's freedom to do things they don't like and take us to a near-theocracy (and for some, an ACTUAL theocracy, like RJ Rushdoony)?? Control freaks who have no order in their own lives, so subconsciously the only way to ADD order is to control society with moral rigidity.

  • this guy is completely full of shit. what a delusional creep

  • Liberals love children. Love to molest them, that is.

  • @omegapoint777 Your "liberal catholic priest???"

  • spanking is not a bad thing if it is done to discipline your child, it becomes abuse when you are angry and releasing that anger on the child

  • Blumenthal's informed and droll approach really works as he takes on the loons in America, Israel, and elsewhere.

  • This guy is a douche bag.

  • @chewbaca1989

    wrong, jerk.

  • @bigollameo

Blumenthal is just seeing how far he can run with his bull till someone calls him on it. This guy probably doesn't even donate to the local Goodwill, I do. Just imagine I say the the Far Left Liberals hate Blacks.

Then I say hey, the created a Black Genocide.

Or they think so low of them they prohibit Blacks in Ghettos from owning guns.

Except that all of this is true. Keep your money grubbing hands off of my earnings.

  • @chewbaca1989

Next time you post, you should put "making sense" as your highest priority. You didn't here, and it shows.

  • @bigollameo

Sarcasm is not my strong suit.

    Blumenthal hates Blacks

    Black Genocide, youtube it.

  • The far right hates everyone except white, heterosexual Protestant Christians like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh. They claim they're patriotic Americans and liberals aren't yet they started talking about seceding from the union the day Obama took office.

  • This guy Max Blumenthal is an American treasure...man radiates with integrity...Conservatives c an eat it--they're completely morally and intellectually bankrupt.

  • Morally and Intellectually bankrupt? Troll?! And you live in Detroit?! Coming from a genius like you from a city that is as close to being Hell as one can find from YEARS of Democrat machine mismanagement would normally mildly irritate me but it just shows why Libs will always be the basement dwellars they have always been: Everything you touch turns to shit and a lisping wuss who has no kids (and hopefully never will) speaking about child rearing is laughable. Great assessment tho...treasure!

  • This guy is such a loser. How many kids does he have? OK since Alec Baldwin screamed at his 14 year old daughter who was probably being a brat like most 14 year olds can be, this lisping basemnet dweller would then conclude all liberal democrats scream at their kids and use that frustration as pretext to their political philosophy?! Dude, get a real job, you are stupid and just because your father was Clinton's hatchet man (and a poor one at that) doesn't mean you have anything relevant to add.

  • @ct2kc Wow....brilliant argument....lead the way Troll.

  • max loves to just make stuff up

  • Dobson is a moron. He's a christian after all.

  • hilaarious

  • "Dobson cultivated a belt wielding army of millions?" LOL LOL. Fully understanding Godwins law I say that this kid makes Hitler look like a twin.

  • If you point a gun at someone it maybe called a crime, if the state does the same it maybe called Law. Funny how people can be programmed to follow mindless word slavery to the point of advocating hatred towards those that are trying to keep their children away from ther very ones that claim the right to point guns at anyone they want to...the government. Sure the very same people that have bombs and tanks are going to make great teachers aren't they liberal statists?

  • That's funny I thought John Gatto and various other homeschoolers are more or less of a libertarian bent, not an anti-Spock tirade, just go read some books written by John Holt and Gatto and then tell me you understand people of the "right", whatever that means anyways!

  • See I was right:

"Erich Seligmann[1] Fromm (March 23, 1900 March 18, 1980) was an internationally renowned social psychologist, psychoanalyst, humanistic philosopher, and democratic socialist. He was associated with what became known as the Frankfurt School of critical theory" - Wikipedia

democratic socialist = collectivist = communist.

    Don't deny it freaks.

Amerika needs "Liberal" season before it's too late.

Don't understand? Follow my links. Read the quotes first.

  • Jimmy Olsen is a commie. Who woulda' thought? Well, he was a newswhore.

Hitting and loving at the same time = sado/masochism = nutbar.

Fromm was a communist, another version of a collectivist, just like this freak, obviously.

Collectivism via mindless false pacifism still enforced by the force of the state. Pacifism at the point of a govt. gun.

  • For a start I don't believe in 'beating' those I love. My loved ones (children) are worthy of my love, understanding, encouragement & complete respect, if I expect to be duly respected by them.

Striking a child is sadistic behavior. A bully in action! The kissing & cuddling afterwards is the masochistic element of the sick & twisted parent who lacks the ability to comprehend the art of good parenting skills.

Max is a genius! He is so aware of psychological misfits.

  • I'm with Daniel44125 this guy is a moron. Self delusion is apparently across ideologies.

  • Far right against children? 1st time hearing that 1. Spanking is biblical, got a problem? Take it up God.

    @3:12

Liar, I'm black AND poor, and identify with constitutionalists, don't lie on people. The left tries to help blacks but they just make things worse. Every time I hear a liberal wanting to help blacks schools get worse, jobs get lost, families break, and so on.

Please stop trying to help us black folk. just leave us alone, ya'll done enough damage!

  • LOL @ describing children as "hellians." That's a new one for me...I think now I've heard it all.

  • If anyone's should be called a 'hellian' it should be a so-called 'parent' who strikes their innocent little ones for simply being 'a child'.

  • Agree totally witchwild, being a Mother myself and having brought up 2 honest and well behaved people who are now parents, I believe that if you need to resort to violence to control a childs behaviour you are a failure as a parent and a bully. I always say that it's not that much different bringing up a child to rearing a puppy, puppies respond to praise when they do things right, so do children. If you raise a pup using violence you raise an aggressive dog, same with kids. Violence = failure.

  • Beautifully put, bel! You sound like an excellent parent indeed!

Kids raised by bullies grow up with so much emotional baggage & mental illness & usually treat others like shit cos that's all they know.

  • Hmm witchwild, "kids raised by bullies grow up with so much emotional baggage" now who does that remind me of........oh yes, a certain Mr Savage. Who I believe actually says in his autobiography that his Father was a bully. Both of my children are well adjusted, know that truth is one of the most important things and neither one of them are racist in any way. I rewarded them for good behaviour and took away privileges for bad and they had to earn any pocket money they got. They are 29 and 37.

  • Ofc he was not a socialist! He simply was not at all coz he's a man made myth..

  • Simplistic and sweeping analysis, that ignores the fact that people come to beliefs and attitudes in many different ways.

  • Yes, "death panels" are real-under the psuedonym "insurance companies". Enough with conspiracies theories, "wake up" to reality of what we have now.

  • Spanking as a form of discipline for children still too young to reason with is effective and not sadistic. To make the leap of logic from "spanking" to "hate children and the future" tells me this guy is off his rocker. Ironically, I think he's serves more as a cautionary tale about liberal/leftist pop psych and failed ideologies!

  • "Spanking as a form of discipline for children still too young to reason..."

    Oh, the irony!

  • No, it's not just spanking, it's the authoritarian concept. Some people identify with the socialist concepts of jesus when they read the bible, and some identify with the fire-and-brimstone god of the old testament- it's really all about the person speaking.

This is what's dangerous about religion, the person promotes their OWN ideas, as sanctified by their OWN interpretation of god. Nonsense of the highest order. "Ye will know them by their fruits".

  • Jesus certainly wasn't a socialist. Nowhere does He promote confiscating the fruits of the labour of one person to give to another. And while He promotes charity, that is very, very different than welfare.

  • Socialism is also very, very different from welfare. Perhaps if you understood what socialism actually is, you would have understood my comment about jesus.

  • Why is this considered far right? Russian and Chinese communism beleived in even worse punishment for people of all age groups.

Child punishment beleifs are not part of a wing.

  • In case you didnt know it...Russia and China are considered even further right wing than America....so you just gave 2 good examples of child punishment being very right wing ideas.

  • Because in America (contrary to what Glenn Beck says) there really isn't a far left. The far-left and the far-right (i.e., communism and fascism) share a common acceptance that authoritarianism and totalitarianism is an acceptable way to achieve your aims.

Child assault beliefs are not so much part of a wing as they are part of religious denomination - evangelicalism, for instance.

  • Hurting children "until they cry" will not make them become good people or make them love their parents. At best it will just confuse them. At worst, it will totally fuck them up. I was raised this way and it was hellish.

  • So I think that there is another component to the Right's "Trial by Ordeal" ideology - the rich are superior because of their noble birth, and the poor are inferior and are so born... but the poor can "be made worthy" by going through these obstacles that, if they get through them, can develop into someone who overcomes his original sin of inferiority... poor people by definition are of low character, rich people of high character, the poor need an ordeal to prove themselves.

  • Right-wingers have been saying the same things for centuries and since the French Revolution, when they realized that they needed the people on their side, they have tried again and again to convince the poor that inequality was both natural and desirable. It's blatant self-interest, its terrible, but the ignorant still fall for it.

  • The right does seem to adhere to a "trial by ordeal" ideal - that is, people should be faced with as many obstacles as possible, and that a painful and protracted struggle "builds character". Removing such obstacles is something they denounce as something that results in a lower quality of person. By their logic, of course, the rich are inferior and people in Third World slums are superior...

  • I don't know, in terms of character, that seems to be quite frequently correct.

  • This is unbelievable crap!

I am speechless at the high level idiocy

  • I agree. Why do people need to make things up to try to prove their point?

  • Amazing video.

    A++++++++

  • Blumenthal could not be any damn further from the truth on this one. I get what he is trying to take, but loving your child does mean having to discipline your child. I'm sure the whole video is worth watching but this clip is too short to address a far more complex issue than this young man has the years or experience to do so with. If it were politics and not children I could give this more credence, but to say ANY ideology hates children is ignoring fundamental truths

  • Discipline is *not* equal to punishment, and that's where this topic derails into sado-masochism.

What happened to crime in the 80s, when the religious right was at its most fervent? It went up. Child beating, the death penalty, and Constitution bashing didn't stop crime.

  • I agree, Blumenthal is pointing to behavior borne from irrationality, but he isnt simply pointing at one particular political party, he's actually addressing the much larger issue, that religion, especially Christianity, is the root cause for the sadomasochistic behavior.

The God of Abraham will terrorize you by asking you to sacrifice your own son, but he loves you and just wants to test your love to make sure your not faking it.

  • You are given free will, but you better submit or you'll suffer agonizing pain anguish for eternity, but he still loves you.

Its self delusionment and cognitive dissonance all in one package.

  • while I agree discipline does not equal punishment, there are certainly cases where punishement is a necessary form of discipline. It takes reason and wisdom to know when and how to apply punishment as a form of discipline. In the 40's and 50's when punishement was used far more in excess than the 80's they never had the crime the 80's had. discuss this honestly and intelligently or don't bother trying at all.

  • Punishment != Beating, or spanking, or whatever euphemism you have for assault

In the 1940s and 1950s crime was far lower than in the Depression but there was a general trend of steady increase - which contrasts with today when crime is steadily decreasing. The murder rate in the mid 1940s was higher than today. (this is all per-capita, of course).

    (remove spaces)

"discuss this honestly and intelligently or don't bother trying at all."

  • if that were the case, and thats a big if, wouldn't areas with high social conservative values be the higest in crime ? I don't see mormons climbing the lists of criminal offenders. Is detroit socially conservative ? was New York in the 80's ? the issue is far deeper than blumenthal gives credit, and I hope you know as much.

  • No, because correlation doesn't imply causation.

"was New York in the 80's" Far more than it is now. Although the GOP has not carried NYC since the 1920s in a presidential election, attitudes towards crime were far different in the 80s - more were in favor of the death penalty and Gov. Pataki rode into office on a promise to restore the death penalty (which was later ruled unconstitutional by the NY Court of Appeals). Back then, NYC was top in murders after DC - now, it is the safest big city.

  • But didn't the decrease in crime also corelate with Koch leaving office and Guiliani's rise to mayoralty ? Guiliani was more conservative than liberal, and Koch was more liberal than conservative and crime stats were worse int he 80's under Koch than under Guiliani in the 90's ? I understand correlation is not equivalent to causation, but my point still stands about blumenthals simplistic assosciation not backed up by any facts.

  • Blumenthal was talking about the far right. Guilianai isn't on the far right, neither is Koch (who on some issues, e.g. death penalty, is more conservative than Bloomberg). There's a difference between being socially conservative and being on the Dobson right. Dobson doesn't advocate occasionally hitting your kids, he advocates doing it regularly, and says it actually helps in the long term (which is absurd - it helps in the short term, only).

  • btw, you should look at the crime stats for 'blue states' v. 'red states'.

    deathpenaltyinfo . org / murder-rates-1996-2008

  • Would that be Blue collar crimes, crimes resulting from poverty or white collar crimes associated w/ republicans?

  • the right has no more claim to failing its children than the left or centre, I do not believe any ideology celebrates, endorses, or tacitly approves of hating children. some kids do need a beating once in a while, or they will end up in real shit.

  • This isn't about left, right, or center, it's about the fringe of the socially conservative wing of the right.

  • so then most of the people who commit crimes come from socially conservative families ? I don't get the connection

  • No, my "isn't about left, right, or center" comment was unrelated to the crime statistics comment. I was responding to your "the right has no more claim comment".

  • Thank you Fora.

I will order Max's book, 'The republican Gomorrah', tomorrow from my book shop.

    5 sparklies.

  • haha, good talk.

  • Democracy really isn't representative. Populations do not elect candidates who represent them, but who manipulate them best. The solution is to choose our representatives by lottery. Everybody who isn't a certifiable fucktard should have to register for the Legislative Selective Service and be subject to being called up to do a stint. The president might still need to go through the vetting provided by an election because of the nature of the job, but the congress should be representative.

  • When I first opened this video up, i saw the title and thought "C'mon, Max, you're just making up shit to demonize conservatives, they don't hate children." But, after hearing his analysis of authoritarian regimes, I see what he's saying. The Christian Right has become incredibly authoritarian and I can see how "discipline" ties in to that.

  • if he didn't bring up that the right hates children, his arguemnt would make more sense. Personally, as a conservative, I don't think liberals, libertarians, conservatives, socialists, or even most fascists hate children. Some people may, but that has so little to do with whatever their ideology is, it throws his whole argument off base.

  • Yeah, I agree with you, this is mostly just pop psychology run amok.

I am a liberal so it sounds like honey to my ears at first. But you can frame any ideology you like as a pathology. "Liberalism arises from too little childhood discipline. Liberals were coddled as children and never learned to take personal responsibility." Bla bla bla.

There may be a small grain of truth in the notion of "politics as psychology," but ultimately ideologies are about ideas. This guy seems to forget that.

  • thank you and I agree with you as well. He seems to be throwing out some red meat for the uninformed. This video may be titled a little salaciously, and I think incorrectly.

  • spoken like an inexperienced young man without any experience or children.

i hope he has triplets one day..when hes older he'll realize how little he knew.

  • They do love their butchy "magic helpers," don't they? For me this is clearest in wingnuts' weird insistence that people on the left 'worship' Obama.

It's a big country, so people like that must exist, but I sure don't see it. Lots of frustrated Hillary & Edwards & Nader Dems out there, and tons of criticism from w/in the left...but THEY see favored pols as cultish 'magic helpers,' and so the assumption takes on a delusional life of its own.

The political sado-masochism is spot-on too.

  • wow. that sort of makes sense. it's better to breed followers would will do what a leaders want. Authority does make some people submissive.

  • This dude needs to be whipped until he cries like a little baby and then allowed to suck on Rush Limbaugh's boobs.

  • Totally disaggree with what you say...but agree with the way you say it :D

  • idk, I think this guy is over-generalizing and demonizing conservatives.

  • They should stop electing people, listening, and watching en mass to people from a minority position of their party, then, Tempest. Then trying to distance themselves from any bad, any extremism, and say "hey, I'm in the middle!"

  • While I find this guy to be a poor speaker I couldn't agree more with him.
