Comsats early stuff is pretty good buI never understood why Mark compared the two. To me they're more like a precursor to the Chameleons, another better band.
I just heard Comsat Angels on youtube. I never heard of them before Mark Kermode just compared them to Joy Division. I am not a huge Joy Division fan (I perfer New Order) but I agree with Mark Kermode on most points but on this one... Please theres a reason I never heard of the Comsat Angels before. He must have been smoking Crack that day!
They're both talking from a different perspective. Mark about his personal taste and the other dude about popularity (or maybe Mark's measuring against some unknown standard... top ten characteristic weightings or something like that).
Anyway... nuff said...
The Comsats over JD any day for me and JD were a bloody good band too.
...and a special thank you to Mark for getting the Comsats together at Sheffield and the subsequent 3 gigs.
Exclusive live reunion in their hometown as part of the Sensoria music and film festival. They will be performing songs from their first three albums only and Mark Kermode will be present to give a special introduction.
I've heard of a few songs by the Comsat Angels and they are pretty good. I sometimes wonder what might have been had Ian Curtis died, would we be talking about Joy Division being one of the greatest bands ever? Related or not, the surviving members of Joy Division did form New Order, which was one of the biggest bands of the 1980's, although I'm not sure they would've gone in the direction they did with Ian Curtis still the lead singer.
the film is alright. slightly overated maybe.nice cinematography and Sam Riley is good. I kept thinking of it as a companion piece to 24hourPP while I was watching it-I think that did it a disservice in the end.Actually i think it did a disservice to both films, each highlighting the flaws of the other.24hpp has more vitality and fleshed out sense of place and character (wilson and gretton are far more believable).but its portrayal of Curtis whiffs of mancunian caricature when compared to Control
I would but unfortunately there aren't even any peers to download it.
But I'm also familiar with Magazine, Wire, Talking Heads, Killing Joke, The Fall, and all the other great bands from the post-punk period, and I'd be surprised if Mark is choosing the correct band to say 'were better than Joy Division' (I don't think any of those bands are myself, but..)
Yes, these are all great bands. And I'm old enough to remember them when they were current! I won't definitively say one was better than another, but my favorite band is the Comsat Angels. It's all personal taste and I respect the opinions of others on this.
Whether or not people agree that one band was better than the other, I applaud Mark Kermode for mentioning the Comsat Angels. They were brilliant and deserve a wider audience than they have had. If you can, buy Time Considered, their BBC compilation. Or anything from My Minds Eye or The Glamour, both available on iTunes.
Actually I've read many times that Comsat Angels rate very high among their post punk peers, and if you listen to anything from their first three albums, you'll have to agree.
Maybe Steve Fellows from the Comsats should have killed himself? :D
@tomsega That's some weird logic there. He proves he doesn't know much about music by naming a band you've never heard of... I don't agree with him but Comsat Angels are bloody good.
@MrKeepitunderyourhat - I'm sure Kermode, like my Dad, could name a lot of bands from the 80s I've never heard of, by virtue of actually having lived through the decade!

I hated this movie, honestly. I don't like what it decides to show us and how unessessarily depressing that makes the whole thing.

Good review, but Kermode proves he's not a music critic here!
I haven't heard a serious music critic even mention that band in terms of the post-punk era.. let alone rate them higher than Joy Division.
Kermode also once said "I wouldn't know Radiohead from a hole in the ground"...
