I live in the Springs too but have never ever attempted this drive. Why? Cause shortly after moving here in '91, my hubby and I STUPIDLY attempted the drive to Victor/Cripple Creek from that OLD single lane road that begins east of Canon City and runs north to Victor. Have YOU attempted this drive? Just curious.......... Oh, we did it in a brand new White convertable. Huge pot holes, hairpin turns, no guardrails, on mostly a single lane (a narrow one at that). Luv it here though!
I love going up this road!!! Gotta put your hands on the car before it gets dusty and see ghosts haha! I can't remember which road i was driving on, i had a friend directing me while i was driving, we got on somewhere around south nevada and it led oh, 70 or so miles into the mountains. i just remember going at 11pm and being scared i'd break down without cell service. any idea on which road it was? also-are you living in the springs?
Hi and yes, I live in the Springs. You were on old Stage Road, which leads to Cripple Creek. You get on it at Cheyenne Mountain (NORAD) here in the Springs. It takes about an hour and half to go up the road...
Thanks for the video! Brings back memories. We drove the Gold Camp road under a full moon at night in the early 80's to Cripple Creek. We had to move a fallen tree on the exit of one of the tunnels, which was just before a small campground. We stayed at the Imperial Hotel, met Sandy who worked as the accountant and her husband Guido who worked at the Gold Mine, celebrated her birthday with several drinks, saw the play, and had a great breakfast the next morning. Had a wonderful time there!
Oh and I forgot to say we drove it in a 1980 Dodge Mirada......and the other part? We drove the shelf road! We had to squeeze by several better suited vehicles that we encountered. We obviously didn't know what we were getting into....LOL....but we forged on down to the end.
Looks wonderful! I am checking out Colorado Springs for relocation after I finish nursing school. Hope to visit first and this would be a great day out for neat drive.
Usually open this time of year, but with all the rain, there must have been an erosion problem that washed out a portion of the road or something. It will probably be open by now.
Thanks for your post, sure brings back memories. I've been down (and up) this road a number of times, many years ago. Not in the last 25 years. I've lived in both Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek. There are a lot more people on it than there were then.
I use Gold Camp to access the Jones Downhill mtn bike trail. It's an amazing downhill workout. Leave a car at the bottom and drive your bikes to the top, then retrieve the car from the top. All of the driving takes along time, but well worth it.
It's a shame that the state doesn't want to go in and reopen the middle section of gold camp road. Also for a little bit more history between the time it was the Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek RR and Gold Camp Road it was known as the Corley mountain highway. It was a privite toll road to Cripple Creek. W.D. Corley then sold the road bed to the state in which they opened it up as a public road to Cripple Creek and Victor.
omg i miss high drive!!! I just moved back to PA from the springs about a week ago!!! We would go down high drive at 3 in the morning... go back up it and down again!! They just closed it for the year and i was sooo depressed i couldn't go down it one more time before i left!!!!
Thanks for all great the videos ive wanted to live in colorado for the last 30 years now I can take a trip to the mountains from my oklahoma living room any time I want please keep them coming
one of the best parts about living in the springs was i could drive 20-30 minutes, and be on gold camp, old stage, woodland park, green mountain falls, red rocks camp ground, and any number of amazing places! even palmer park, or garden of the gods were great for getting a little peace from the daily grind. i used to sit on the flat-ish rocks next to balanced rock and read all day. i miss it!
Yeah, especially if you live on the West side, you can be in the mountains in only minutes! And when it gets too hot you can be at a stream in Cheyenne Canyon in a flash!
My old man used to take us up there every single weekend. He would drive all the way to the top and turn around and head back down before picking a spot, used to make my Ma so mad. He's gone now, and this little trip up Gold Camp was like a trip back in time, you have my thanks for posting. My Dad would have loved it.
wow!I haven't been on this road since 1980's and I still recognize it.Brings back memories of an old friend,Richard Maio,no longer here in body but always alive in Cheyenne Canyon.God bless him!
I LOVE GOLD CAMP, AND OLD STAGE! ME AND A BUNCH OF FRIENDS USED TO GET SOOO WASTED UP ON HIGH DRIVE! One time me and the girl that gave me a ride got in a fight, and she left me at High Drive at 3:30am. I had to walk all the way to nevada, and tejon from High Drive.
Jeepster - great trip. I'm hoping to drive that road myself, but until I get to do my "Ghost Town '08" adventure, (which is starting to look like '09!!)this is almost as good as being there. Love ALL of your vids, espec the True Grit homage!
(Do I know you from another website? I'm a.k.a Gravelrash.)
Hey, glad you enjoyed it! I don't recognize your name, but it's possible we've crossed paths before! Keep checking back or subscribe, more videos on the way! Thanks again and hope you make it out this way!

@cocatwoman7 I drove that road in an old VW van. Scariest drive I've ever made, and don't regret it for a minute. That was almost 20 years ago.

You know they closed off the parking lot at the top of the high drive. Right where your video cross fades.
