When US invaded Afghanistan 2001 it used Northern Alliance to beat the Taliban. I thought the US beat the Taliban but it was Afghan warlords who drove out the Taliban, supported by US air/firepower controlled by a few hundred Special Forces. Taliban merely melted away to avoid getting wiped out. So now you see here opium fields grown openly. During Taliban govt it was not allowed. Today the global heroin market is supported by US/ISAF contractors and military smuggling it out of Afghanistan

The afghan army and westerners destroy poppies, guard some for friendly growers and encourage the growing of other crops. it is complicated but the west is not buying save for medic afghan opium. Certainly there is some corruption in our ranks as money talks but the Taliban is up to their eyes in dirty money!

Probably also US Special Forces...they did it before in the Iran-Contra Scandal. That is proven. I have not seen evidence that Taliban are encouraging poppy growing. Maybe they tax but it is the West that pays the high-price for poppy which is giving incentive to Afghan farmers and protecting them from arrest

I have a family member doing time right now for smuggling people. I've crossed the US border armed to the teeth many times and I have never been caught but I do not smuggle even though easy and tempting. Many feds do and get caught and sometimes it goes high, but it is not a U S Federal Gov business.
