@al3no0o0o0od its pretty simple actually... its about letting go, its about acceptance, its about death (obviously). like wolfgang said dont overanalyze it, just watch it, just feel it. interpret it how YOU want.
@al3no0o0o0od a somewhat simple interpretation though is the past (spanish Tomas searching for fountain of youth) is Izzy's book. When he drinks the sap and turns into the flowers this is Tommy finishing her book, the present (surgeon Tommy trying to cure his wife) is real life, and the future (astronaut space bubble Tom trying to resurrect her) is also real (the tree in the bubble grew from the seed he planted on her grave 500 years ago, he found the key to immortality too late to save her.)
@al3no0o0o0od hahah okay or the future space bubble tom is also part of the book. it really is a personal interpretation kind of movie and whats really important is that its a symbolic thing, its the message and impression it gives you... for how confusing it is when you first watch it, it still manages to get its point across: death is part of life, accept it. death is the road to awe ;-D
My two cents: The past is Izzy's part of the story of the length that Tommy will go too to protect (save) her. The present is their actual fight against death, which Izzy comes to accept. The future is Tommy's part of the story about immortality, fear of death, and need to accept death as a part of life. Why? The movie ends in the present with Tommy saying goodbye to Izzy, which was his acceptance of the need for death. Facts and reality are difficult to see through the veil of love.
i love this movie so much and it makes you think about the eastern religions and the acceptance of death, whether it is what makes you truly live forever, or if it is something just to placate humans...However, this movie tried to do too much, and while it is great and so many ways and so unconventional and beautiful, there are too many inherent flaws for this movie ever to become a bladerunner type movie, although i do wish it could : /
@laura94140 what i think is the past is izzy's vision of tommy trying to cheat death, present is the present and the future is real ,tommy finally found the cure to the disease called death and went on to live for a long time and is afraid to die ,the tree died, in the final moments he realizes that by dying he will live forever with izzy
@laura94140 the past is izzy representing tom trying to cheat death in her novel, present is present, the futur is tom he went on to live for centuries untill the tree died coz he finally found the cure to death but he is tortured every day by izzy telling him to finish it(his life) and in the final moments he realizes that by dying he will live forever with izzy ....the part where is saying "I'm gonna die"while laughing and crying is the most beautiful scene ever...hugh jackman rocks
@lucraetius I found it a big ambiguous as to the Last Man actually being Tommy from the Present Day. But I love your interpretation, and yeah it nearly had me in tears when he finally decides to end it to be with her forever.
@MattyGJoker why not?he said that death is a disease like any other and he will find the cure at the funeral and clint mansell has a song in the soundtrack called "the last man"
I loved it, and cried a lot... To make you believe something the best way is mixing true things with lies... you can get eternity, but not here in the earth, that will happen after...and we just don't know where...so don't search eternity on a limited life and planet... I agree with the film in all situations but they want us to believe that heaven is on earth.... and you'll be lost if you try to search it , and that will lead you to crazyness...
And I feel you are pretentious person who cannot see beyond your own nose, to think that a good movie will have less on an impact just because they aren't with someone.
I saw this movie, I have no idea what it exactly was about, but at the same time I don't feel like I have to. I loved it, the music is exquisite. This movie is very precious to me for some reason. My heart was captured by it, but what ít was, I don't know.
im really glad those who referred to god were shot down. this film is a reminder that our transient exsistence should be filled with things real and honest. this is man made.... lets not give credit to some phantom god
Or it reminds us that love transcends beyond death. To believe that the visionary minds who wrote and made this movie are but a product of random evolution would be a cruel joke indeed.
I believe there is something going on that Science still does not understand yet. I base this upon my own experiences with the supernatural that I won't share as they are my own personal experience not to be ridiculed by others. That something that is out there I think is captured in this movie beautifully.
i agree that honesty in a creative context is almost palpable its so powerful. i just think its important that we remember that WE are capable of these experiences and we r capable of creating them. if we remembered that maybe we wouldnt fill the world with so much shit
The movie shows so many things; not only love. But a real loves that echoes through times, that really stains hearts and creates pain and bliss in a single pill. It's a real film; and every time I watch it, I sob from start to end because it reminds me of so much beauty. The musical score reflects that so well <3
Knowing what is love is knowing what is life, otherwise we just live dead. Problem is that life is painful, yet would you rather be dead? I've said that to myself a number of times but that's the only time in my life that I truly was lying to myself. It's one thing to pretend it's another thing to completely believe a lie. Love is better than anything death can offer...
@Tutamlik: I don't think that anyone could truely grasp the concept of this movie because it is simply so immense and all encompassing. I've had only tiny glimpses of this during spiritual journeys. We are simply not evolved enough as beings to understand. Death is the road to awe. We must live and die many times to achieve true enlightenment.
@Tutamlik That's true, but unfortunately it's kind of underrated by the critics. It has a good user rated on imdb, but it should be in Top #250, like a Beautiful Mind by the way. I've always said this but don't worry, no sugar, Inception is in Top #20, and the world is spinning....
tom is a docotor who tries to find a cure against cancer, cause his wife izzy has cancer.
500 years in the back he is hispanic soldier(or something like this) who searches for the tree of eternal life, so he can safe spain.
in 1500 tom is in a sphere moving to the dead star xibalba, where his already dead wife should be reborn all three times are getting combinated in the storyline, i saw the movie and can say its beautiful and sad, my favourite
I love this movie so much. I would agree it is for more intellectual minds. There are some religious/spiritual things that i dont agree with. But is still an absolutely beautiful story of death and life and how we deal with each. The soundtrack was perfect for this movie
My goodness I'm welling up again! I loved everything about this film - the stunning, artistic visuals, the moving script, the brilliant acting... I just adored it. The soundtrack is simply perfect. For me, Darren's best work. I loved the extensive use of gold lighting as well. ^^
also, interestingly enough, i found out that there was no computer generated imagery in the entire film. pretty sweet for a movie with those kind of visuals.
I can't understand how there are people out there who hated this movie. I watched it for the second time yesterday and I can't get it out of my mind. The music is absolutely beautiful, everytime I hear this particular piece, I'm close to tears.
I couldnt agree wit you more. I think the movie was more directed to the more intellectual minds. If the movie doesn't have people getting shot left and right then it isn't good.
this movie shoots straight to the heart, a place too many of us seem to avoid. It takes courage to face and endure feelings of loss. For me the music brings outside what is inside, like bathing in the full moon...
