  • omg! our choir is doing this for our school talent show and i got the part where she goes "oh yes that woman made brazen overtures. with a guilt edge garuntee with golden glint in her eye and a silver voice with a counterfeit ring just melt her down and youll reveal a lump of lead as cold as steel here where a womans heart should be" im really excited!!

  • @guitargal818 Good luck with the part. But remember, it's "gilt-edge" (as in gold leaf), not "guilt edge". The cleverness of the lyric is (obviously) the rapid-fire use of metallurgically-inspired metaphors.

  • I just don't get this song... At all... >_<

  • @IRFFonROBLOX . The song that the ladies are doing is supposed to be a representation of the gossip that these typee of women engage in. It can be confusing if you have not heard gossiping crones, and yes even guys, as they gossip and even make up things to nit pick about a person.

  • The Music Man is a wonderful movie that gets better as the years go by.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • the buffalo bills were great! what a barbershop Quartet, perfect voices & execution, clear, clean & totally on pitch. Stellar band for such a part in the production!

  • Thought Experiment:

Imagine walking up to this particular group of hackling hens and declaring the following statement:

"While Thomas Crapper may not have invented the toilet per se, he DID invent and patent the Ballcock."

    discuss =3

  • You know, this song sounds better in live stage performance, Im not sure why. Gossuping women in sensaround, I guess.

  • Comment removed

  • Ballzak, lol

  • I think I could watch this a thousand times and still crack up both times Eulalie says "Balzac". She really sells that line.

  • they sound like a bunch of roosters...

  • @rassie16 that's the idea XD

  • @rassie16

Hens, and actually that's the joke. When old wealthy women get into these kind of gossip circles, they're referred to as "hens", and their spouces as "hen-pecked husbands". Believe me, that that's NO coincidence they added the "hen cackling" sound effects.

And for the record, I'm not sexist, but yes, I DO generally frown upon gossip mongering biggots, regardless of gender

    =3.

  • @EXRazeBurn couldnt agree more on gossip mongering biggots;) [thanks for the explanation ;)]

  • I'm Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn in my school play. The one who says "Balzac". ^_^

  • @RazuBeriHimitsu aw cool! i wanted to be her, but I got Edwart Dunlop, the middle-tenor of the Quartet *i get to play a man!*. the awkward part is that I'm married to my bff gabby, soooooooooo. . .

  • The Music Man is one of the best movies ever.

Hollywood has not been this good since it came out.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • lol check out my new vid. its the lady saying BALLSACCKK!

  • @sillyhatday Balzac - Honoré de Balzac. He was a french novelist and playwright.

  • Lol I watched this in Music History toay and laughed so hard at "Balzak"! xD

  • All bow down to the great Mary Wickes.

  • absolutely brilliant! the comparing of the ladies to hens! lol! Merideth Willson was a geneous!

  • i love the way the ladies look up when harold says "Marion"

  • The Buffalo Bills sang at my house when I was very young in Northern Virginia!

  • Lol i learned this song in Choir and my teacher told us to look it up.. :) lol I love this song :D

  • Hermione whats-her-name is fantastic. Balzac

  • My grandfather's singing group lost to the Bills for the part in the movie!

  • At 0;22 does the woman to the viewers' far right, state, "cheap Jap"?

  • Baaaaaalzac.

  • I did this musical, and I was one of the women...non-talking one though

  • Damn! this song is catchy! I love the harmony at 2:40 and 2:47

  • the bass line

  • we did this in at a community theater nearby me in the summer of my Junior year of high school. I was one of the salesmen on the train, but I also incited riotous laughter during the "Piano lesson" scene. our Mrs. Paroo was RIGHT from Donnegal Ireland, so when she said "And your library fulla books" and the last chord was struck, I yelled at the top of my lungs from backstage "YOU TELL HER, MRS. PAROO!" got in a TON of trouble, but it was worth every second!

  • this is my favorite musical to watch, next to rigoletto, on video, but least favorite to see as a stage play...too many ppl singing at the same time

  • Love how The Mayoress says "Balzac!"

  • BALzac. :)

  • Meredith Wilson was a genius! The image of chickens and these fine feathered ladies is excellent!

  • BAAAALSACK!!!! ROFL

  • I love Hermione Gingold's voice when she talks. <3

  • I'm from a small town, yes the rumors do spread that wildly. Except it would me more entertaining if they burst into song.

  • i performed this play 2 yrs. ago

  • @badgurl7788 I'm going 2 be doing it in about a month's time. Only a townsfolk but really glad that I got in, but our Barbershop guys don't really sound "good" yet. There 3 that r roughly the same age around 30 or so but the director put in 1 15 year old, even though he can't sing well, he just screams his part & u can REALLY hear him off key

  • haha! i have to play one of them in a play i am doing! it's so much fun!

  • Balzac....no matter how many times I watch this, I still crack up!

  • BALZAC lol

  • When I watched this in high school, in band, near the end of the year, I incited riotous laughter when I burst out laughing and nearly pissed myself when Mrs. Shin said BAAALZAC. The movie had to be stopped to calm everyone down. Needless to say I got in trouble, but it was worth every minute of being chewed out.

  • He left River City the libation building, but he left all the booze to her.

  • 'scuse me f'r living, but I never read 'em: Chaucer, Balzac, and-- who?! Well, I may have read something from Chaucer.

  • my music teacher immediately pointed out at this scene that the woman were intended to be like chicken

  • soffc.org

  • robert preston is not charming AT ALL

  • great musical great songs i love that song pick a little those women sang that song very good!!!! i wish i would have seen that movie in person!!!!

  • BAAAAAAALZAC

funniest line in the movie. Just goes to show how mature we are

  • @superchuk5 remember those mature people when you were little? what a empty illusion that turned out to be ;-)

maturity comes when you can't find any fun anymore and become content of it. Any kids looking forward to this, enjoy the time you have.

  • @Tw1St3DSt33L

Depends what your idea of fun is, kiddo. You sound like you're already stuck in a rut.Got to put some effort into maturing well or you'll never get out, and your prediction will come true for you.

  • I played Mrs Shin and loved her xx

  • The actress (Mary Wickes) playing Mrs. Squires here was also Sister Mary Lazarus in the Sister Act movies, right? I recognized her right away.

  • @ibeatpudding

Yep, and Mary Wickes was also in the 1960s "nun comedy" _The Trouble with Angels_ (which starred Rosalind Russell as Mother Superior, and Hayley Mills as -- what else? -- a spunky teenage troublemaker).

  • i love how the buffalo bills brake into song every time he makes a little melody and he makes an escp

  • doing this song for a spring concert tommorow at bordentown performing arts center (BPAC) at 7:00

  • The original tea party founders....! ! !

  • A NEVER to be duplicated classic!!!

  • All three of those 'words' are in fact the names of authors whose books were banned at various times: Henry Chaucer, Honore deBalzac, and a french monk named Rabelais. Rabelais was actually imprisoned at one point because of his writings; I think a Pope was insulted. His writings are also the inspiration for the obscure, but extremely talented 70's prog rock band Gentle Giant.

  • BAAAAAAAAAALZAC

  • We're doing this musical, and we just choreographed Shipoopi last night, and one of the moves reminds me a LOT of this song. (We're basically strutting like chickens)

  • the person in the black dress, isn't that Katie Nanna from marry poppins?

  • LOL to this day I don't know what BALZAC is....I know what it sounds like, and why people laugh at it (ball sack hahaha really mature) but what does it actually mean??! I wanna know! Lmao.

  • @mrshackztor they say ...chaucer, . . . blazac is an author of a french book. i think ..
