@KaboomBoii I would say the balls are quenched. That is, heated till red hot and then cooled quickly in cold water. This produces smaller crystal grains within the metal resulting in a harder but more brittle metal. I don't think being more brittle really matters in this application as the ball is unlikely to be put under forces which make it snap but hardness would mean the ball lasts longer and less prone to warping. Just what I think, I doubt it would be annealed or tempered.
