For these younger guys they have found a spot in the 2Guys world. A singular honor I would say. They are simply the best at what they do & the do it all no matter what your tastes are.
@JMikeVisser hey just want to say that this song is supposely base on owlsley the sound man for the gratful dead and a chemist. who drove around in a portable lab makeing the purest psycedelics out in california in the late 60s. they say he go caught eventually when one day he ran out of gas and the police searched his vehicle.
I think Herinton does a great job here, but there is only one Larry Carlton and one Jeff Baxter. But, if I could play anyways like this guy I,d be making records. I was a lead quitarist for ten years in the same band. People said I was good. Compared to this guy I should hang it up.
Steely Dan's Rent Party '09 12-piece bandwill be enlarged by one with the legendary guitarist Larry Carltonfor six special setlist showsin New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago

Herrington does a terrific job! And with "My Old School" as well. But didn't they use to tour some years back with a young player named Blues Sparacino?
Well, there's people there are better on stage rather than studio and viceversa. I like that one, too. They're not so young anymore, some people fade a little bit with fage, know a couple of them personally...
The truth is Steely Dan were special because they managed to write great songs and be amazing musicians, alot of bands have great musicianship and can't write a good song to save thier lives. Thier needs to be a balance and if a band is able to overcome thier relatively shoddy musicianship in creative ways and still make great songs especially in the beginning then thats great too
Look Steely Dan are ESPECIALLY amazing musicians with that said thier is much great music now if you look beneath the radar of mainstream shit, which unfortunatley is what is representing us. Radiohead though is fucking amazing and happens to have great musicianship
Love the music and Steely Dan!!! Too bad it is painfully obvious the video director doesnt know the music that well. He is missing key cut points and angles.
Larry Carlton set the bar so high with his brilliant playing, John is/was in a no win situation.
Balancing enough of Larry's GREAT licks to keep the spirit of the songs origin and mixing enough of his own GREAT playing so he dosen't look like a clone !
Amen! That progression is challenging enough to play through without having to avoid certain phrases lest one be accused of simply plagiarizing Carlton's iconic solo. I've listened to several clips of this guy doing very impressive work on 'Dan tunes. He's an ace.
reply to 3rdsne. I agree, the rubbish thats released in the charts, thats forced upon us. this isthe real thing, one of the greatest bands of all time. the killer melodies and structures, with brilliant lyrics.
the question today, really should be.....Can we REALLY call a lot of today's musicians,...Musicians ?.....I would have to be the first one to weigh in on that, by giving a resounding, NO ! They're not.
wow!!! nice one. is that an ES 339? great tone and great solos. both were based on Carlton's, JH used these as "target notes" and put his own stamp in there, even the tapping part. JH=mr. 339?
it is a 336 the new 339 has a slightly smaller body still, the same size as a Les Paul. Carlton (orMr335) uses a 335 and has a signature model.JH is the closest I have seen to Carlton,s playing style.
Is it me, or are the vocals (Fagen & backup singers) totally off key? Fagen always did have sort of a monotone voice, but he always managed to make his vocals sound like they were on key. What I just heard makes me think there were serious problems with the stage monitors, resulting in a bunch of singers who couldn't hear themselves.
Yep. Fagen is off as he starts off. The backups seem off when they start off too. I think you're right about the feedback speakers not working. It sure sounds like the backup singers are still off before the before the bridge.
Keith Carlock. He is one BAD ASS drummer! My brother took me to see Steely and Michael McDonald on the last show in St Louis on the Sugartooth tour in 06. AWESOME show! We got rained on as soon as Kid Charlemagne started, it was my first real concert experience so this song leaves me with the great memory! I hope to see Steely one more time at least!
Thanks! This is the best live version of this song i've heard. The Mr. Carlock grooves the sh@t out of it! I'm invious. I love these guys but I've never seen them live. Maybe one day.
Though a good guitar player JH is no Larry Carlton (Guitar World magazine 100 greatest guitar solos 88. song: Kid Charlemagne guitarist: Larry Carlton band: Steely Dan
album: The Royal Scam). LC's versions is one of the top 100 guitar solos of all time so it's not fair to compare the two. JH is good but LC is GREAT!
While Larry Carlton is a master of the instrument, I really like this guitar version. It is close enough to the original arrangement to give the listener what he/she expects to hear, yet JH puts his own, very pleasing, stamp on it. I say well done!
Outstanding filming. Thanks, I love this band and I cannot afford to buy seats that are this close. It is good to see what they are doing on stage and not be miles away....
that solo made me forget everything i know
