This undermined the WHOLE industry of professional wrestling. It's one thing to do shoot interviews and promos, but to have your commentators talking about "scripts" and that Goldberg "was supposed to do something" and WCW constantly pulling the rug out from under the feet of the fans during PPV's makes me wonder how this company was ever successful.
Of course most fans know that there are scripts and storylines and planned spots, but keep that in the meeting rooms. Not on TV.

The things is you never, ever say wrestling is fake-it is no different than watching a movie and the actors saying in the movie that it is all make believe. Fans watch wrestling to be entertained, escape reality-Russo really messed this up.
As somebody already said, Russo had this idea in his head that every wrestling fan was a 'smart mark' so he therefore did most of WCW's booking as though it was real.
He constantly broke the fourth wall and made events seem what we perceive as 'real'. However this ultimately backfired and instead made WCW look like it was crumbling at its very foundations (and it was).
'Incidents' like this in WCW are the very reason why Russo is generally disliked.

All though that did turn into a true shoot when Russo said more than he was supposed to and it pissed Hogan off.

The best analogy I can come up with is like ou go to see a broadway show, and they stop performing in the middle of it and just go "hey this is fake and scripted" and then continue the show. The things is you never, ever say wrestling is fake-it is no different than watching a movie and the actors saying in the movie that it is all make believe. Fans watch wrestling to be entertained, escape reality-Russo really messed this up.

An ABSOLUTE DEFINITE work. A Russo work.
As somebody already said, Russo had this idea in his head that every wrestling fan was a 'smart mark' so he therefore did most of WCW's booking as though it was real.
He constantly broke the fourth wall and made events seem what we perceive as 'real'. However this ultimately backfired and instead made WCW look like it was crumbling at its very foundations (and it was).
'Incidents' like this in WCW are the very reason why Russo is generally disliked.

That was real. Russo wrote stupid scripts that ruined WCW. The same thing happened when Russo wanted Hogan to lose and Hogan said no so Russo told JJ to lay down for Hogan.

You can tell it's a "work" by the announcers reaction to it. They keep telling us and pointing out that the finish didn't go as planned. If someone really didn't go the way it was supposed to, they would improvise around it and act like it never happend. They wouldn't make a big spectacle about unless ur Paul Heyman

Yeah WCW was screwed up but to me that's what made it awesome because you had to question if things like this were real. In WWF if Kane set someone on fire or something I mean obviously that's planned unless Kane possesses this supernatural power lol. However this did not look planned. And even if it was planned, it was something different. It still made it more unpredictable and I like that. WWF to me has always been so predictable. WCW was so chaotic, it's a shame it's gone. I miss it.

Blatent work. You can tell the difference between a work and shoot, theres just certain markers which make it obvious. Primarily the intervention of common sense. I mean think about it, The commentators go quiet when someone is real, they just kept going like it was just another show. Also, how fast did Russo come down that ramp? It was like he was waiting at the curtain. I've never even watched this era and I can tell it's a work. Worked shoot is lame compared to the real thing.

@Cander5142 Absolutely. WWE rarely break kayfabe. 2 times I've heard the mention of 'storylines. One was Owen Hart's tribute show and the other time was Chris Benoit tribute show. Russo was doing it all the time. Even hyped a PPV as 'Goldberg refused to follow the script'.

@Maj0ra Well of course it is dumb. That is the word that explains Vince Russos run of WCW. As I said, worked shoots were very common with him because he really did think that nearly all wrestling fans scoured the internet for rumors. So he figured the only way to surprise them was to trick them. It didn't work of course. A more famous example of this is the Russo Hogan fiasco. All though that did turn into a true shoot when Russo said more than he was supposed to and it pissed Hogan off.

The best analogy I can come up with is like ou go to see a broadway show, and they stop performing in the middle of it and just go "hey this is fake and scripted" and then continue the show. I think most fans KNOW it's fake, I think they SHOULD but we want to see the performance of it and hear the story of it, not be reminded that it's scripted since it defeats it's own purpose.
