There has never been a left handed catcher in the MLB, maybe at a college somewhere, that im not sure. But if your a left handed catcher vs. A right handed catcher chances are the righty will go further In baseball than u.
I just came from practice this morning where 2 kids had lefty mits. So yes they do make them. I think coach is using an akadema though and I am not sure if they do.
Could you comment on a few questions. What is the current philosophy on catcher's protecting their throwing hand from foul balls? Hands together definitely make for a quicker release but doesn't that make the hand more vulnerable to injury from foul balls? The other concern I had in the demonstration was how high the catcher set up before the throw. In my experience, unless you have an outstanding umpire behind the plate, it will take strikes away from the pitcher. Thanks for vid
@Catching101 Thanks Coach. You provide a great deal ofvery good information to share with my young catchers. I think until the boys get a little more advanced, I will keep their throwing hand protected behind the back or right leg and just stress the importance of keeping the ball transfer higher. Best of luck to you and your team. (except when they play IU).
@pwdubya putting your hand behind your mitt is what i have been taught. I always get hit in the wrist or the thumb though because i don't always get all of my hand behind my mitt.
I personally wouldnt use knee savers, because they can stretch/tear the cartilage in your knee and can limit your mobility, these are good at a middle school level but I would just work on strengthening the calves, quads, hamstrings and your core
One question I have, do the shin guards give you support? I am training to be a catcher and I have all the requirements of a catcher , but I cant hold my stance for long at all.
@nerfandfootball Knee savers also help. They're pads worn behind the shin guards on the back of your legs. But catching101 is correct. A catcher really has to develop his leg muscles.
@nerfandfootball no but you can go get knee savers witch will help you balace but after a while you will start to devolop muceles and you wont need knee savers it takes a whil to develop the mucles though
i'm a catcher, but i'm left handed so would this first trick, throwing to first be the same?? or easy, i guess to actually get it there and trick them?
@purpleinthehead Yes they do you just have to go to a specail store. Some pros are lefty catchers. They will go to a store that sells only baseball stuff
@rampageriley99 lol don't think that gonna happen, all the coaches love me at catcher. it's usually the reason every coach wants me. just because I'm left handed doesn't mean I'm automatically gonna suck. take Jack Clements for example he was a well know left handed catcher. play six seasons and caught 800 games. :)
thanks helped me out just started catching last year

Do the rules allow you to tape a small bucket on your butt to relieve the stress on the knees?

I hope the new/young catchers notice he doesnt step as closed as most instructors teach but more towards his target
