  • Sister has a 2000 exp 5.0, almost at the 200k mark. A few things that went bad were pulleys, alternator, power steering pump, starter, ac compressor bearing failure (all these easily fixed)

A few suspension repairs (200k mile you expect this). Started making a lifter noise today. Thing is she had a 84 mustang and engine knock started and dad said when motor locked he would replace it. No oil hard driving and guess what??? Engine never seized. You know its a FORD when you can do that.

  • fuckin timimg chain

  • i have a v8 5.0 omg it does so good in the snow

  • yeah this truck could have been saved if you just didnt run it and went and bought the two upper timing chain tensioners one for the right bank front very easy to get to 26mm bolt come right out 40 bucks and the one for the back left bank little harder to get to.. same thing on mine the tensioners went out on the front right bank made the timing chain slap around and make the same noise but before i ran the shit out of it and totally ruined the engine i did some researched .

  • Timing chain death sound is an easy fix provided you catch it early enough and have the proper tools. However, OHV 4.0L V6 > SOHC 4.0L V6

  • @Eriic9104 the ohv 4.0 engine does not have this timing chain tensioner problem

  • @Whitecrackertrash

    I know.

The motor in this vid is a SOHC though.

  • @Eriic9104 excuse me , you say on your comment like 6 month ago they that the 4.0 ohv is the samething as 4.0 sohc I am here to tell you is not , the 4.0 ohv engine is a much better engine period.

  • @Whitecrackertrash

Did you fail basic reading comprehension in elementary school? I simply stated the simplicity of the fix, than how the OHV v6 is far more superior than the SOHC.

  • Well my 2000 explorer sport has the same nose and its the timing chain the tensioner snaped and its going to cost 1500 to 2000 to get it fixed!!!!

  • Its the "timing-chain-tensioner" Its a common problem that was recalled under warranty. I just bought one that had the work done, and I love the truck!

  • it sounds like you have a timing chain guide thats broke in side the engine mine was doing the thing before i fixed it you can email at chadfire122@yahoo.com if you need anything else

  • IT's a shame you murdered this through the Cash for Clunkers program. Perrfectly savable, sounds to me like a couple of exhaust leaks.

  • we have the same car fundamentally..... i dont think its the timing chain, sounds too heavy

  • hey guys, can you watch my video and tell me what you think the problem with my engine is?? Thanks, it would be greatly appreciated!

  • something's loose on that cologne v6

  • shoulda got the V8!

  • Sounds to me much like my mom's 98 which we also sold to a mechanic, almost did the C4C on it. Internal damage and lots of knocking. The motor'd already been replaced under a recall for a bad oil pump which didn't sufficiently lubricate the engine. I'm convinced they never fixed that problem, just replaced the engine and eventually the problem resurfaced. Bad sounds like this one. Lost lots of power over time and was a shame. Mechanic replaced the motor, not the pump, going bad again!

  • hey man,..i have a 2000 model ford explorer sport that i wanna sell..engine sound good send me an email

  • How did this turn out, and where did you find the parts?

  • It didn't turn out at all. I traded the car in for a 2010 Kia Soul Sport through the CARS clunker program. Got $4500 for it.

I do miss the power of this car - compared to the Kia it's a rocket! It was also impressive as a 4x4. However I was looking at $1000 - $1500 in repairs.

The Kia is also much more fuel efficient at 26 mpg avg. EPA compared to 16 mpg avg. EPA for the Explorer. I would be saving about $800 a year in gas if it stays at $2.75 a gallon. If the price goes up I save even more.

  • I can tell you this much. You could put a ford through hell and back with little to no problems. Just remember this one thing: That Kia will not make it a day or 7 years! They are actually worse than Saturns and Chevy cavy'!

  • It's made it for 1 month now - so far so good. I have a 100,000 miles / 10 year warranty. If it does not last 7 years I should be covered. we'll see. Thanks for the warning.

  • I figured out the problem on mine, I know you'll hate me for this, it cost me $2. It's the tensioners on the cam chains. Mine was right rear & I went to a wrecking yard, got a part off one that had the upgrade part put in it. It cost me $2 and took 12 minutes to fix. You pull the two screws on the right inner fender liner and one bolt, and use a socket drive to pull the old tensioner out. Yours sounds like the front tensioner, which is much harder to replace, but still a one day project.

  • @jls1znv9999 Thats funny! when my dad crashed his vw a little girl my mom used to babysit over heard her on the phone talking about it, she then came up and said "you should get a kia" i was like roflcopter! no...

  • @redbluequad Hey if you ever again come by this sound here what it is and i know this because i have the same year and modle as you but yours sounds like an 8 cy i got a 6 4.0L this sound is called sound of death and this happens when the tiing chain guides bust and yes they do bust in alot of explors because their plastic... you can still drive it but try not to go over 4 RPM's cause now your chains rubing up on everything and sooner or later it'll blow out hopes this helps anyone =]

  • there are a lot of interference engines out there which means that the pistions and the valves share space. if the timing chain should happen to break there may not be enough clearance between the pistion and the valves, resulting in bent valves, and a very expensive repair bill. If it is the tensioner or timing chain replace it soon as possible.

  • Not too sure it sounds like a timing chain rattle, but you can drop the oil pan ( there is plenty of room, no need to remove any cross members on the frame), and see if there are any broken plastic pieces in there, i dropped mine a week ago, and found a bunch of broken plastic pieces, and tomorrow im going to be removing the timing cover, which will reveal the problem, watch my video if you think they sound alike!

  • Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep and eye open for your video. I took the car to a shop that's worked on it before and they think it is the timing tensioners that needs to be replaced on the passenger side. I guess I'll have to open mine up also to see exactly where the noise is coming from.

  • No problem man, i removed the timing cover, and sure enough, that was the problem!

  • You say to look at the oil when you take it out of the oil pan to see if they have broken plastic pieces?

  • Yes, but actually, there were broken pieces of the timing chain tensioner at the bottom of it
