I love this recording because it is the only one that shows clearly how he actually sounded live in a large hall -- that is the true Heifetz sound and I have to say, it sounds sublime, haunting and even transcendental. You don't hear that edge or the scratch anywhere that comes in his recordings.
Regarding intonation or ''not in his prime'' factor, he's almost 70 years old here...and who can fight age? But it's still SO wonderful and you don't normally feel the fact. This was at a time when he was also performing very rarely. But the lack of conductor -- he eventually fell out with co-operating with anyone all together and this was also had some role in his retirement in the 50s.
You know, I'd really like to see a performance of this when we was younger. I've listened to an earlier recording and wow, it really makes the mistakes in this one clear. Heifetz was the greatest violinist in his time, but old age and lack of a conductor make a difference here.
The orchestra plays too loudly when Heifetz is playing. Also, the balance within the orchestra is very poor. Everybody just plays mezzo forte. The tuning within the orchestra is often suspect and the poor balance does not help. Heifetz deserved a better orchestra than this.
I can't believe what I'm reading below - did someone actually call this 'out of tune and painful to listen to'??? I suggest you scrape the wax out of your ears...
The differences between Jascha Heifetz and other violonists like Fritz Kreisler, Isaac Stern, Nathan Milstein, Yehudi Menuhin, David Oistrakh, and other great violinists of the twentieth century are so minimal as to be almost non-existent. To say that one of them is [or was] "greatest" or "greater then the others" is mundane. The same is true for soloists on other instruments, such as the piano.. I must admit that this performance by Heifetz does not rise to the level of many of his others.
You do not know - feel - much about tunes, do you; Heifetz's very rich tune is invincible!!! Mutter to a certain extent has managed - but, no!! - your ears are not of music; no??
he's kinda not "liked" by other other greats because he wanted to protect the "superiority of american violinists". yehudi didn't want to join his invitation to form that american violinist group
Jascha Heifetz was the best violinist that ever was- he was the Horowitz of the violin. If you want to see the apex in technical ability of any violin piece- listen to how Heifetz played it.
@pogo32123 id say paganini was. for him to write those caprices required great technique and great knowledge of how to play the violin. paganini was also a true prodegy
@yangsta72 yes! i would agree on that one- but unfortunately there are no paganini phonographs. For years people thought his music was un-playable. I don't even think fritz kreisler could play it. I heard a great story once of freitz kreisler; that when he first heard heifetz play the violin, he said "might as well break my violin bow- now that i have a new standard for a violinist" I am paraphrasing what he said.
@mahlerman101 That's what the French say instead of "Good luck" - Merde. I'm not shitting you, I live in Quebec. Literally, it would be "bonne chance". mais on dit "Merde"!
There's magic here- the colors in the tone, the flexibility in the pulse, the dash and exuberance and intensity- no one is quite like Heifetz- a nonpareil.
the names of the makers were stradivari and guarneri and should be referred to in that way. Adding "us" to the ends of their names was an artifact of writing their labels in latin
clarification: i'm pretty sure this is the video where the french national orchestra played so horribly that they had to put a different recording audio to the same pictures, if that makes sense. and he's 70 in this by the way. it's the orchestra's fault.. not sure if it's still the french orchestra who played the recording?
Beyond compare. At least a "messenger from god." Not even Heifetz could give this "hight of the cold war crew" the emotion and spiritual enlightment he seemed to instill in orchestras with his unparalleled ability his entire career. No one can bring tears to your eyes as this amazing man could. True compassion. Perfect Moderation.

I think it is not a good idea to play this big concerto without conductor. Look at the beginning, he doesn't know how to start, to give a sign or what... He is the king of violin, but I am sorry, he doesn't know how to lead. especially in the second mov, such a stupid movement with the bow.
HEy guys, if ur comments are negative , pls dunt write ur comments on this video. In his teen, he was considered a virtuso violinist and till nw , he's still.Regarding of the tuning of his playing, oh com'n, he's how old aready?? 80+? Hardly at this age , could play a bruch Concerto SCottish Fantasy u noe!
bravo, you said it for me. thank youl. the man was an accredited genius and this is only one performance. how lucky we are to have anything and for free. they should down load something better if they don't like this.
hm is this Eb minor or Gb major? it just sounds very minor to me in the beginning (my ear is pretty terrible and I don't have the sheets on me, so it might be horribly obvious were i to see the score =P)
Let me begin by stating - I love Heifetz - He is at the top of my list and I think remains the greatest. That said, this is not a great performance and I blame it on his arrogance.
This concert was done sans conductor - he acted as conductor and soloist. And quite frankly, it could have used a conductor. An interesting experiment, but the end result feels like he's trying to play with a music-minus-one recording.
The French stage expression for "Good Luck" that was said - was apt: Merde
I would say Heifetz is truly a LEGEND in the world of classical music, and he's very likely the greatest violinist of all time!! He makes the most difficult pieces look so effortless, he truly is a violin virtuoso.
It was Heifetz version the one I listened for first time, but then I listened to Oistrakh to this same composition and I thought that heifetz version was like a student version comparated with oistrakh version.
WOW, ocorde, what a STUPID comment! The Scottish Fantasy is one of the MOST DIFFICULT pieces ever composed for the violin, it takes YEARS of dedication and practice to get it right! NO STUDENT can play this fiendishly hard piece, not by a long shot!!
This is a wonderful video, thank you very much. Where is it from? It shows how even as an old man Heifetz's musicality and virtuosity was all there even though his technique may have decayed.

@mrotwist you are exactly right. Yes Heifitz was amazing, but i agree that this perfprmance does live up to his reputation with other violin solos.
