  • He wasn't "weird" - YOU are weird. He was a great leader and tactician. He had a relationship and faith with God second to none I know of. Hed lived a hard tragic life before the war that mosty men - yourself included maybe - would have folded completely where he stood up. He was a man of honor. He was also ladies man. He won battles far against the odds. And YOU call him weird? Educate yourself man - before you speak.

  • Look both of you. Avoid the idea of the godly north and ungodly south. I am a southerner from sc and yes, slavery was a moral blind spot. It was wrong. There you go loyal, you heard it. But don't pat yourself on the back too hard. The treatment of the native american by the Lincoln adminstration and union army was also a moral evil.

  • All respect to Jackson, but this is a hilarious video about a very stylized representation. It makes fun of the sculptor, not Jackson. Ever seen the statue of Gen. Meade in Washington, where it looks like he's struggling against a group of naked youths who are trying to shove him off the pedestal? Classic stuff.

  • The first time I saw it I was baffled by how they made that statue - he's not picking on it, you have to see it to believe it, lol!!!!

  • You are an idiot. Go pick on Grant. Jackson was a hero. Grant was a coward and a drunk.

  • You're welcome.

  • That's my uncle Mannie! So if that general is dressed like a superhero, is he hung like a Horse? -mary

  • I admire Jackson very much, but Grant wasn't a coward or a drunk. Thinks of how he handled himself at Lee's surrender. He was a class act

  • Walkenshaw, he was all 3. He was a coward for killing women and children. He was a drunk, as documented by his own side. He was a class act at the surrender.

  • When did he kill women and children?

  • Loyal... it is in the books and diaries, very obvious. If you read some, you will find it. the March to the Sea was an example.

  • Sherman was in command during the March to the Sea, not Grant. And even then, there was no mass murder of women and children.

There was probably some starvation due to confiscation of food. But Jubal Early and NB Forrest did much the same - and often to Confederate civilians!

  • Loyal: "Sent by Ulysses S. Grant "create havoc and destruction of all resources that would be beneficial to the enemy," Sherman began his "Atlanta Campaign" in May 1864"

  • Is that an order to "cowardly kill women and children?"

  • Yes to lay waste to the region so a crow may not live, that was the quote. take care, and READ.

  • And what about the hundreds of raids conducted by rebel forces in the North?

Waste was not laid by Jubal Early, Forrest and Jeb Stuart? Are you going to feed me some mularky now that they paid the Northerners that they looted or something like that?

  • No raids were in the north. None.

  • WHAT? Of course there were! Forrest penetrated as far as Ohio! Jubal Early burned his way to the ramparts of Washington in 1864.

Jeb Stuart missed the first two days of the Battle of Gettysburg - why? Because he was on a RAID. When he returned on Day 3, he had over 100 wagons of stolen loot with him from the towns and cities of Pennslyvania.

    They weren't raiding Southerners...

  • You CSA apologists are always amusing - talking about the glorious Lost Cause while managing to avoid mentioning slavery... Droning on about the tariff and states rights without mentioning the kidnapping of free blacks after the Fugitive Slave Law was passed, for example.

The only reason why Confederate commanders acted differently is because they were mostly on defense. And when on offense, they looted and stole from the North just as badly as any Union army in the South.

  • Loyal, I am not apologetic at all. Slavery was a part of the war but not the full reason, as it existed in the north as well. The main issue was freedom and taxes. Just as many of us are looking at the current govt and thinking 'oh no please!?' so did the south, but with legal cause to leave the union. Several union states passed laws to not allow blacks in their states. So one needs to read up on that. Many free blacks fought for the south and owned slaves themselves.take care, and READ.

  • Free blacks fought for the south? Very few - compared to the dozens of regiments raised by the North. The three slave regiments formed in Richmond in 1865 never marched.

Most of the Northern states banned slavery by 1820, so you need to take care and READ, too, apparently.

  • Loyal, I am sorry if I sounded like putting you down by saying Read. I did not mean it that way. Yes, there were free blacks, jews, native americans, etc. who fought for the south as well as the north. It was mult-cultural. Banning slavery by a date did not mean much, to be honest. Practice proved indifferent. Licoln himself did not care to free slaves, sadly. Gen Lee and Jackson of the south hated slavery as a moral evil. 3% of southerners owned slaves, the rest fought for freedom.

  • Yes, but 100% of the southern power structure owned slaves. They called the shots and got the people all riled up to rebel.

Lincoln moved towards ending slavery as the war got worse and worse. He did far, far more than Lee or Jackson to end it. Emancipation Proclamation for one...

  • I will concede to you that Lincoln largely freed the slaves for a very simple, pragmatic reason: he needed the manpower.

In the new age of total warfare that the Civil War ushered in, by late 1862 desperate measures were needed to reconstitute units who had been decimated in battle. Press ganging Irish immigrants - which had very evil consequences for my city of New York - was ceasing to be an option. Word was getting out around Europe - emigration to America was almost a death sentence.

  • One thing we can both agree upon is that the war was horrible and deadly. It was devestating and sad. Sometimes wars are necessary, but they are always, always horrific.

  • Hilarious but so tru so tru. How many other statues are there out there that we need to be warned about?
