Marvin in his prime would not lose at middleweight not even to ray Robinson Marvin would be to big to strong c'mon Lamotta gave ray issue with his strength now add superior skills that's MARVIN
Thanks for posting this. This is the fight that got me interested in the sport of boxing. The thing I recall most about it is the steam coming off of Hagler's head after he won.
when you see this it makes you wonder what a blown up lightweight past his best like duran was thinking taking on such an awesome middleweight like hagler and actually nearly beating him, duran got beat by hearns ,hagler and leonard ,but he was the oldest and the lightest ,mayweather could never be mentioned in the same breath as these guys ,who actually fought people they may have lost to
not sure hagler would have beat monzon ,but thats one of the great match ups, mugabi was an awesome puncher, and looking at history ,people will not realise just how hard this opponent was for hagler as he was never the same after this ,and leonard did what he always did.let someone beat up his opponent first, and what mayweather now does
not sure if hagler would have beat rjj, rjj was way faster than leonard with better power and timing. (weaker chin and endurance though). but he's got monzon, robinson and hopkins.
This was far from Hagler's best night. He was past his prime here and still dominated Mugabi.
For me Hagler's best night was taking the title from Minter. THAT Marvin Hagler would have beaten Sugar Ray Robinson, Carlos Monzon, RJJ and Hopkins. Totally ruthless, skilled, unstoppable.
Mugabi had a lot of poitentual, but I agree he was given too much too soon. This fight proves knowledge reigns over youth.
@ErraticBoxing In his prime he was unstoppable in my opinion. His better known fights, Hearns, Mugbai even Duran and Leonard are all past his prime - which goes to show just how great he was. By the way, please upload more Wilfredo Gomez or Aaron Pryor highlights, they're too underrated entertainers.
@TheSammlung23 The same Ray Robinson who lost to Randy Tuprin, Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio and Gene Fullmer? That one? Yeah, Marvin would have taken him. Might have lost to Ray in a rematch but prime vs prime Marvin would have been his toughest fight.
@MrBumboclart Randy Turpin was a very good fighter with a very short prime and if you'll recall Robinson won their rematch by knockout. Jake LaMotta was an all-time great AND Robinson won 5 of 6 times! The time he lost he was a welterweight fighting a middleweight and it was a close fight. Robinson fought Carmen Basilio and Gene Fullmer well past his prime and beat both of them in rematches. Yeah it would have been a tough fight, but prime for prime Robinson would beat Hagler without question.
@TheSammlung23 Robinson was good but he was a natural 147lb fighter, at 160lb Marvin would be bigger and stronger at this weight. Ray was no Hearns in punching power (at least at middleweight) so he wouldn't be able to keep Marvin away from him, not to mention Marvin could switch from inside to outside and right hand to leftie to mix it all up. Marvin takes it via decision, but Ray wins a rematch..as he usually did.
Excuse me, are you watching the same fight? No head movement you say? Well, without head movement, he would have been taken out the first 50 times in their fight. No defense? You don't last 10 and a half round with Marvin Hagler if your defense is poor. Jab? Yeah, he could have jabbed some more.
The truth is both fighters were never same after this fight if hagler never fought mugabi he would of beat lenoard after this fight and if mugabi never.fought hagler he woulda been a legend
@bgunn1580 Agreed. There's a documentary on Hagler (on youtube, I think it's sports century) where Leonard himself talks about inviting Hagler to a restaurant he co-owned where they had a lengthy talk. Hagler apparently said that he was taking too many shots, mentioning the Muagbi fight, that he was losing his enthuasism and that he was nearing the end of his career. Leonard then admits that this is what triggered his comeback, knowing he would be facing a man who was past his prime.
I agree........sugar ray came out of the hagler fight all fucked up...and hagler like new ....and still got the decision.....then he got fucked up by hearns with 2 knockdowns...and got the draw...I agree fuck sugar ray.......Hagler was the best in that era......@yasoon1234
Bro', I am stoked you included Hearns' comment, "Oh Marvin didn't like that body shot." It's one of my all-time favorite boxing comments. Right on, man.
Mugabi was a fucking BEAST. Going in to this fight he was 26 wins 0 losses 26 knockouts. He was one of the most FEARED middleweights of his era and Hagler had no respect for him. Just showed how great Hagler was and how iron his chin was. Also shows that they don't make boxers like they used to.
@FSMNoodlyAppendage Mugabi peaked in this fight and only a great fighter with a steel chin could've beaten him. And Hagler was very much that. So yeah, Mugabi looked really good here--quick and violent.
Marvin Hagler is NOTHING compared to Sugar Ray Robinson. Sugar Ray Robinson best P4P EVER!!!!! Marvin who!!!!!!???????

@MrBumboclart He has a few to choose from, but I think Hagler's "peak" performance was against Sibson.

0:58 now that's a goooood chin . Mugabi threw a beautiful counter uppercut and Hagler just ate that shot and kept coming forward
