Doing squats properly shouldn't put any real stress on your back. And even in an exercise that is supposed to work your back, ie deadlifts, your only really at risk if your form is bad or your ego gets in the way.
It looks great, I'm just not sure I understand how the movement is different from a regular barbell squat (besides, of course, holding the dumbell like that).
@lhp70 while I agree that smith machines kill kittens, if you're trying to isolate a particular muscle group, they have their benefits. I use the smith machine to supplement free weight military press and incline press to isolate those particular muscles. apparently a lot of pro bodybuilders do this but personally, I stick to as much free weight as possible.
good stuff meroki

i did this with light weight and i felt a sharp pain in my left inner thigh :(

@soumya86 yeah sharp pain in the left inner thigh is usually a sign of an underlying issue :-(

The wider stance and point the toes outwards brings the inner thighs into play.

I'm not entirely sure, but I believe the wider stance allows some different muscles to kick in, possibly your inner thighs. I'd have to try it.

I thought it was excellent

Do people ever do sumo squats on a smith machine?
someguy9008 3 years ago
You could do it. However, you would need to place your feet forward so the bar would not bend your chest forward.
BodyByManheimer 3 years ago
I thought a sumo squat was wider based than the stance this guy had.

i think slightly wider than that i do
