Simon is a MONSTER and Anthony Jackson,i mean what can you say..He is the bass line creater for the song by The Ojays"for the love of money"..His hands are like the size of herman Munster..
Simon has been an in demand pro drummer since about 1974, and before that played in his Dad's (Sid Phillips) dixieland Jazz band. His credits are just too long to list and even the discography on his site doesn't cover everything. But certainly he's played Jazz festivals since the 70's with the likes of Stanley Clarke, Jeff Beck, Gil Evans and the Buddy Rich Orchestra for starters.
This is Force Majure band that Simon did with longtime friend Ray Russel on Guitar. This is found on the Protocol CD.
Simon's influence is one that is not like how Ringo or Bonham influnenced, Go to any drum forum today and you will see drummers who say they are influenced in some part by Simon his melodic style and no one, makes their kit sound better than Simon, listen to Jungleyes on Out of The Blue live. You can actually hear he is playing two different base drum sizes!

What a completely forgettable piece of garbage. Yeah, they'll be callin' this one a classic for the ages. Miles' Bitches Brew, Tony's Lifetime, and .... Simon Phillips Protocol Band!!!!
@ jazzdied, your pathetic piece of jazz snobbery is a completely forgettable piece of garbage. Simon Phillips has contributed a great deal to music over the years, and the fact that jazz fusion or any other of the many genres he has covered is not in vogue does not discredit him and his bandmates as clowns in comparison to musicians Miles Davis or Tony Williams.
kalamari, please reply with specifics on the "great deal that Simon Phillips has contributed to music over the years", and don't leave a list of his credits. In musical terms, what has he left behind for the younger generation to build upon? Be specific!
I expect no answer. Ignorant posers are going to be called out from now on. I fed up with posers who think they know about music, especially jazz. You've been called out poser.
this drummer is very wel respected and has made quite a reputation for himself truly. He has toured with The Who, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Toto and there are more I am sure that I do not know all of his contributions. Take care.
jazzdied, obviously I have neglected to return to reply to your comment for quite some time, but I think the other users have covered it. Hey there, listen i dont know that much about jazz but i think its not about being so radical or agressive dude, as a drummer i respect simon`s work but he is not that great, he loves showing off and makes some people think he is great, of course this is not jazz at all and will never be, i love jazz, and i think it is more about passion than flashing people. i know real jazz is dead but arguing will not make it come back.
No,this is not jazz. This is Fusion.Although Fusion is a blending of Rock and Jazz, hardline traditionalist want no association of Traditional Jazz with Fusion.Hence the reason for your attitude.
You're absolutely right. AJ has said that Al's parts were so demanding that he could only perform them with the plectrum. It's a hell of a way to learn how to master it! Apparently he still uses one but just not very often.
I dont know but this is Simon Phillips little side band he threw together back when he was touring with the Who in betwen tours he was just fooling around. All this music was written by him so he might have programed the synthisiser himself it is very possible.
What a great tune !. That groove is just killer.Notice how Anthony feels every note . Simon Phillips is just great . First heard him on Stanley Clarkes ;Rocks , Pebbles and Sand, in the Early 80,s.For a long time Anthony ,played with a pick , check out Al De meiola ,during Anthony,s Ken Smith time.
I like AJ but this is terribly fuzak. And the guitarist isn't great. Overall my life would be better if I never heard this again. Everyone - navigate away from this page immmediately!
Excuse me but this is a piece of history whether you like it or not. Sorry if this disrupts your sensitive constitution. Perhaps if you had listened to this when it was released you'd have more appreciation for these fine artists. There is more to them than this one song (and period) you know!
In the instructional part of this video, he showed how with a metronome playing in your headphones, you shouldn't hear it. in actuallity you hear the click very soft almost unhearable, the point is that if your playing is solid and you are in time with the metronome then the sound is mixed with your strokes. so you can say than click simply dissapears
Because it's taken from a Drum instruction video called Simon returns ( it's now out on DVD), so that's why he's the center peace, it's a Simon Phillips film !.
He probably is right handed, but he plays drums with a style called "open-handed drumming". The drummer doesnt cross his arms, and the ride cymbal is usually at the left of the kit. This tecnique is more comfortable for drummers who use hihats in fills and for ones who feel unconfortable of crossing their arms.
It actually has nothing to do with comfort or using hi-hats in fills. I write/draw with my right hand but I'm dominant left on a kit. We use both hands equally but we have a stronger left-hand lead..which is reserved for the hi-hat and ride cymbal. You grow up playing that way. Also, a "right-handed" drummer can actually learn to play "open-handed"
Simon is a fuckin' living legend!!!! He's played some of the most amazing drum parts on a slew of different artist's albums. Check him out on Judas Priest's "Sin After Sin" album. His work with Jeff beck is nothing short of brilliant & timeless. He inspired me to play drums. Simon rocks!!!!

Simon is a very deiverse and respected drummer. There really arent any players like him.His abilities are beyond amazing and he has taken drumming to a whole new universe.Calling one of the greatest drummers of all time Average just shows how unintellagent you are musically.

Besides...he stole his style and set-up from billy cobham. and toto sux.
I cant believe how ridiculous that comment you made just was.First of all you cant spell the word know and second of all I would be suprised if you have never touched a drumkit before based on what you just said. The point of playing a song is not to show off your abilities becuase then you would end up easily overpowering the song howerever this song is not exactly simple and Simon certainly isnt average.

I was in drumline while you were still sucking your mom's tit jr. Your 25 stay outta of this and let the big boys play. Go text your boyfriend and meet for lattes.
Well if you are so experienced you should know that good music need not be complicated, rather it is the delivery... that's where Simon's secret is. While Toto might not be the greatest band you can't shoot SP down because he plays simple. Often the "simple" songs are the hardest, wouldn't you agree?
You are evaluating this guy based on one song. Very shortsighted. There's more to him than this one song. It's his technique, his ability to play different styles of different complexities, and of course, his consistent ability to delivery a performance with any group of musicians. The combination of those elements and his ability to excel at all of them makes him a pretty good drummer, to put it modestly.
I think 'evaluating a guy based on one song' is a YouTube tradition. "If this guy can't show me everything he's got in a 2 minute clip, then he sux". People writing stuff like that tend to like the guys who CAN show you everything they've got in 2 minutes - or they tend to like only one style of music, so everything else 'sux'.
Yea I think the open handed technique has a better advantage for players because it opens more posibilities.Although their are very few players who do so.
Simon has that "Cobham kinda feel" not bad for a White Cat and I mean that jokingly, wish I could play drums! But the Bass is the Bomb!!1 wit a bullet
This is an early single-cut Fodera AJ prototype made by Vinnie Fodera and Joey Lauricella. Wiki has some good info on their innovations together. Among many other things, Anthony was instrumental in the development of Fodera's then-radical single-cutaway bass that you see in the video which has now become a very, very popular (and copied) bass design. I have a Fodera 6-string bass (hence my handle) and they really are something!
haha I know tell me about it. He's just been busy with alot of toto stuff but when I last had a chat to him he said that he was finished mastering the sound for it, so thats all I know at the mo...
The synth _is_ on a prerecorded track. Philips cues on it with those big ol' Keith Moon headphones he's got. Fodera6, any chance you can post more video from this Simon Philips tape? I'm not sure it is available anymore anywhere! Being a drummer's video it gets overlooked by a lot of bass players, especially Anthony Jackson fans. Too bad, because it has some of the best examples and close ups of Jackson's playing technique.
Because he plays open-handed? Are you kidding? They're playing is nothing alike. Then you can say every drummer that plays with the traditional grip is a clone of the first drummer who started with it.
Nah man billy cobham was a major influence on simon philips His whole drum kit set up with the octa bans was the exact same set up that billy cobham was using in the mid 70s all of simon philips chops are billy cobham influenced
A incredible piece of music.....and vibe...Good stuff...!.

Too bad, because it has some of the best examples and close ups of Jackson's playing technique.

always thought that simopn philips was a billy cobham clone myself
markee2006 5 years ago
Because he plays open-handed? Are you kidding? They're playing is nothing alike. Then you can say every drummer that plays with the traditional grip is a clone of the first drummer who started with it.
tuttskifruttski 5 years ago
Nah man billy cobham was a major influence on simon philips His whole drum kit set up with the octa bans was the exact same set up that billy cobham was using in the mid 70s all of simon philips chops are billy cobham influenced
markee2006 5 years ago
Hi fodera6, keyboard is also played by Ray Russel I guess.
Alberto68 5 years ago
Ah, okay. Wasn't sure because I hear his guitar synth sound and then there's another synth sound, possibly pre-recorded.
