  • I've never heard such an excellent comparison of two vocalists. MG seem to be the band that I keep going back to over and over. John Darnielle is a modern poet, I say.

  • The story on the performance of "No Children" they are talking about is that John was sick that night, and loads of people kept yelling out for him to play it, but it's one that he really has to belt out, and he couldn't since he was sick. The audience agreed to sing it for him, however (hence the reason he actually listened to it when he doesn't listen to his own shows.) You can download that entire show as well as the entire Amoeba instore (I recorded both) from archive dot org.

  • really? I think hes brilliant. Go check out the song "the best ever death metal band out of texas". Its one of the best written songs I've ever heard, and I'm sure you can find a live video here on youtube.

  • Darnielle is a terrible vocalist in the same way that Bob Dylan is a terrible vocalist. His voice is an aquired taste that is perfectly suited for his music.

    As for a terrible lyricist, there is no way to contest that. If you can't see the beauty and strong emotions in his lyrics, then there's nothing I can do for you.
