@pingpong1987 - core strength definitely plays a part as the muscles of the torso work with the muscles of the hips, but I would say another key factor is being able to fire the hips very quickly to get your body moving upward and then to recoil quickly to pull the feet up under you. So part strength and part speed, but if I were going to pick one thing I would say hip extensor power.
@hockeylaxboy32 - that is a tough one, because basically it would be a sit up action - which is hard on your lower back (thought to contribute to lumbar disc herniations) so I don't really recommend those. This is also a much slower way to get back to your feet compared to rolling and popping your feet underneath you. I can understand your coach wants you to keep facing the play - that makes perfect sense. Maybe roll to your side and then get your knees back under you?
I am a 2nd year bantam who flops around a lot. It gets the job done, but my coach says that I have to find a way to get off my back faster without rolling over. Are there any simple excersises I can do to help me.
thankks so much for the tips, they work great. I have a slide board at home and just slip on my underarmor pants and shoe covers and I can work on the pushes. I also wear my weight vest when I do it because of the heavy goalie equipment. I am doing AAA tryouts and I was looking for specific goalie drills, these are perfect I do them every morning at 5 am. I highly suggest them to any goalies looking to improove.
@5BethR5 Thanks for the comment - I am glad they help you out. i also love your dedication - you take action, you get up early, you do your work so you can be the best goalie possible - that is why you will succeed! Good luck on the tryouts!

I am in 2nd year bantam hockey. I have played forward since day one but always wanted to play net. I have kept my reaction time up and reflexes sharp, but I am worried that next year will be too late to start playing net! whats your take?
@Schmaltzfarmstudios - hmmmm good question. I guess it depends on your goals with hockey. Ultimately it has to be fun for you. If you really want to play net and are not really enjoying being a skater, then I would go for it. If however you are still enjoying the game, are in line to get drafter or a scholarship as a skater then it is a tougher decision. Is there a coach in your organization you can talk to about it?
Wow, I've never even thought of doing this at home lol...I'm always working on this stuff on the ice lol. Thanks for the video post...this should definitely help me out in the next 2 month for tryouts.
i play floor hockey and this works for floor hockey to.

Sweet vid. Question: is popping up from the butterfly (both legs at once not one at a time) all about core strength?
