First Cummins were PT, in 1992, the STC 444 was the 855 block and struggled to meet emmisions, Ive worked on a few International 2670 michigan county trucks that the P.T fuel system on the early N14 blocks, Cummins canned the STC system because it was troublesome and got with the times to create the Celect, in the mean time they did use both fuel systems, the reality here is John Deere needed a 400hp engine, they had development problems, Cummins had what they needed, the rest is history.
The big John Deere engine, the 12.5 liter, is the same as a 60 series detroit. Other than the John deere only uses Cummins. The big choppers use cummins engines. The john deere engine will out lug a cummins. And they are very reliable.
@dfwurbob ptd injectors were never put in a n14 and the celect did not come before stc also all stc injectors wre ts (top stop) still have the tool in my box to adjust them;)
@droberts444 We converted this one over though. It was originally electronic, anymore it's nearly impossible to do since nobody will sell you the parts.
the first one's were with PTD injectors, then came the one's with the TS injectors, same with the Celect (electronic), and then came the STC injectors, but the Celect is not built so much, because of all problems with it, or, as this N14, with STC injectors, with a defect STC Cable, and/or defect STC valve
A guy where im from had a 4wd Deere with a Deere engine in it. he took it to the dealer to have some work done and was driving it home and it blew up less than a mile down the road. the dealer didnt get the drain plug in tight, so they gave him a free cummins replacement.
I'll have to agree with you on that. Deere can't build a decent big engine. The 619 is alright but just not enough cubes for over 300 hp and the power tech 12.7 and 10.5 in the newer 4wheelers isn't very impressive. These engines were based of the Detriot series 60 engine. Not a big fan. I guess I'm just partial to Cummins. Typical smokey start up for the cummins. Our '90 IH semi does the same thing. Gotta love the sound of the old cummins. :)
@DieselnutN14 blah blah blah god poeple look for any reason to talk junk about a deere do you own any 8 wheel john deere's that size to know wether the engine are good most likely not
@kdiesel4255 well most farmers will more than likely buy a semi truck with a cummins engine before anything else. there are two trucks on our farm with n14 in them both having over 800k miles on them with minor trouble. that is a wonderful engine capable of 700 hp
@mpwelk It is a weird situation. At the time Deere did not make an engine this big that had the track record of the 855. IMO, they still can't build a big engine.
@walkingfreak 70 series had cummins in them deere first had detroit building big blocks for them then they tried their own.. 955 cubic inch v8 ok engine but quite a few quirks and a bitch to work on then after they gave up on that they had cummins build an engine for them.. then eventually they built there own big inline 6 and life was good... now you know ha
This just makes me want to go Straight Pipe out 8960 with a BCIII lol.. Nice 8970, and is it a Stock 400 or more?

Mannn......That thing smokes worse than the 400 BC3 in our Kenworth grain truck! Love that old 855 Cummins sound though.

No way that's a Cummins N14 which are electronic and would not make that much smoke on startup. More likely a mechanical NTC350.
