  • The look of the woman next to Edgardo at 3:50 - "Man, you fucked this up."

  • Wow interesting comments! This is beautiful :)

  • OK Met lets hope you had the good sense to make a DVD of Natalie's PHENOMENAL March 19th performance if for no other reason than to make up for failing to do so in 2009. You gave it to Netrebko over Dessay or Damrau then. Here is your chance for a "do-over." Natalie has gotten even better since then. Anna is a perfectly fine lyric soprano but she was way out of her element in this coloratura role. Give us this one with Natalie & thanks for the HD Live theater broadcast. It was great!!

  • @jtelesio

It most likely has nothing to do with the Met at all. It probably has to do with whatever contract Ms. Dessay has with her record companies. We lose a lot due to companies wanting sole rights for certain singers on DVD.

  • I find it strange that to highlight any contemporary singer, it has to say she is better than Anna Netrebko.

I have seen comments that Elina Garanca sings better and is prettier than Anna. Nino Machdaise if it is a true soprano, and Anna is not. Now I see that to exalt NatalieDessay have to say that her.

But something has to be Anna, that anybody may have reference her to say that other is better.

  • WOW!! I have been looking forward to seeing this for ages, have just seen it and it was soooo fantastic!!! Natalie was incredible and so inspiring for a young singer!!! Thank you Met for broadcasting this and other amazing operas!! :D

  • Beautiful performance today by Natalie as Lucia at the Met

  • Breathtaking finale of the opera -I absolutely love the way how the men carry Lucia up the stairs as normally the curtain would have closed seconds after the last note.

And isn't Miss Dessay stunning -a remarkable combination of singer and actress! Not very often found in opera. When she retires from singing there's a great career waiting for her as an actress.

  • I am not an opera buff but feel blessed to have seen this. Thank you

  • ... and they let Netrebko disgrace the same stage in the same role?

  • CHILLS!

  • wow I like that note at the end very powerful, this is one of my most favorite plays I'm learning it I want to sing it for the tallent show for my school. Its too long for a preformence though I would probubly have to be the one to close the show lol.

  • i hate the ending why does she have to die!!!! i am in tears this is so sad..... poor lucia

  • I simply love her Lucia, there's more than a minute of applause afterwadrs. She is amazing.

  • WOW

  • She is the best singer ever ! and an incredibly good actress to !

  • *too (sorry)

  • Sieglinde's Diaries

    05 August 2008

Natalie Dessay, in her continued progress towards greater artistry, still doesn't know what opera is about

In recent years, Dessay's top notes have been shrieky and metallic, cold, effortful, and generally unpleasant to the ear. The disdain she has for top notes is therefore understandable. She tends to compensate with buffoonish histrionics, overacting the pieces of meaning she gleans from the (mostly bankrupt) text.

  • @09avenger Um. . . that's probably because she had multiple surgeries on her vocal folds.

  • @SStrongIsNeverWrong - yes indeed this is the reason. Whatever the reason, I cannot enjoy her voice or her act. Anna Netrebko was a very good Lucia at the MET in the fall of 2009. She has a DVD from the MET. I love it.

  • @09avenger I'm not a fan of Netrbko's, I think she has fantastic potential but at this moment I don't feel she lives up to Natalie. Her acting and knowledge of music makes her a master of her craft. But we each have our own individual ear, no? :)

  • @SStrongIsNeverWrong ugh thank you. i feel the same way about netrebko. shes just plain sloppy and its disappointing because the voice itself (artificially darkened in my opinion) is very interesting.

  • I love it!

  • Phenomenal performance! thank you for posting!

  • Mesmerising! A magical performer in a brilliant production.

  • Yes it is a high Eb, which is a common practice with this area. I really love Natalie's singing and appreciate it as we don't hear many coloratura soprano's bel canto singing in the the ROH productions lately . Thanks for posting this Opera.

  • WooooW she did this perfect.......

  • can we say STAMINA?!?!?!? wow, she's excellent. idk what the last note is, but, i know it's above high D# and it's purely fantastic!! great job, natalie!

  • How do you know it's higher if you don't know what it is? You also don't know what key the piece is in. The last note is a high Eb. (which is enharmonically the same as a high D#, but fits the key, which D# does not) Perhaps it sounds higher than that to you because when that type of coloratura goes up there, it does sound really high. But it's the same high note that everyone sings. (Well, almost everyone....some sing a double high Bb before the high Eb.)

  • thanks, now i know.

  • the scream at the end of portion 2 is so OUT there- I totally love it- Netrashko tried to imitate it and it turned out awful. What do you expect from a mere imposter

  • I don't like Netrebko in this role as well, but saying those bad things about her is very disrespectfull. It's not even a critic: it's just an ordinary ofense.

  • it is not meant to be personal- it is just that I am bothered by the fact that Netrebko gets attention out of proportion to her ability as an artist. I think her looks provide her with an advantage that should not be there in a pure art form such as opera.

  • @bpmartinelli Agree - it's almost like bullying. I see you posted your comment a year ago - it still applies now. There's not one opera vid out there without hateful, spiteful words. That said, love Natalie Dessay in this.. Amazing acting + voice! Can't stop listening!

  • @bpmartinelli she lacks some fire in her singing, but you must admit that she sells the surreality of this particular scene very well with her otherworldly-clear voice and her often-spastic acting. Other than that her singing is fantastic for opera. Very clear and very pure.

  • netrebko does have a nice vocal instrument but she does not have the appropriate vocal technique to sing Lucia. Additionally her protrayals of almost any role are very pedestrian at best. She does not convey emotion with her singing or acting. Dessay is a true artist and her characters are portrayed with great depth. Netrebko would not have this big a career if she was not perceived as sexy. This is marketing at its best.

  • I couldn't with you more, isn't it disgusting that she can work with absolutely no acting skill whatsoever? RIDICULOUS.

  • could not agree with YOU more!- let's protest to the MET that they need to give Natalie some DVDs

  • Lets do it!

  • they have to stop giving the DVDs to netrebko, neTRASHko. Dessay is by far the best Lucia in many years and she deserves the accolades that come with that- including the DVD

  • I couldn't agree more. Especially when you have the choice between a wonderful Lucia and a ridiculous one...

  • I also wish I could've seen this production in full on DVD - but I think the reason could actually have to do with the fact that Dessay already has a DVD, though in the French version of the opera. There might be conflicts for the contracts or red tape that they couldn't step around.

  • Hum, there is indeed a DVD of the French version, but I don't think it's with Dessay. The DVD was with Alagna and Patricia Ciofi, the CD is with Dessay. So, still no DVD of Lucia/Lucie with Natalie !

  • Ah you're right - though it's still with the label of EMI classics, and EMI's been the one making most of the Met's new DVDs. And since EMI has the DVD with Ciofi they may have contract issues with her since if they make a DVD of the same opera it could take sales away from that production.

  • But it's not quite the same opera... One is in French and the other in Italian, they are two specific versions with their own differences, so if this is the reason why Natalie doesn't have a DVD, I really don't understand. Anyway, the Met SUCKS on that one :(

  • agreed. Just watched the whole scene for the 3653th time thx to you, can't believe there's no actual dvd to get. We gotta beg Natalie for another Lucia :)

  • Definitely! She's been robbed, really! Not a single one DVD of her Lucia... I'm telling you, this is some kind of conspiration ^^

  • Unfortunately, it could be something as simple as a contract conflict of interest between the recording companies that the Met deals with.

  • You should do as I've done: write to the Met. On their website there is a "Contact Us" area. I went there and complained that this production was not being released on DVD. If enough people do it, maybe Peter Gelb will get the message that we want Natalie over Anna what's-her-face.

  • She plays Lucia again in the the upcoming season of the Met Live in HD on March 19th 2011

  • @07emedin I'm going to see that! I'm so excited :D

  • @thecelticspirit Well, let's hope the march 2011 Met distribution will provide us eventually with a dvd!!!!!

  • thecelticspirit is right unfortunaltely, the LUCIE on DVD is with Ciofi and soooo trivial lacking enerything Dessay's Lucie HAS I'm sorry to say (I bought it because it's the only one available), Ciofi makes a fine Violette (which I saw in Avenches 2008) but with Lucie she's so out of her depth .... it's really a shame they didn't record Dessay on DVD because she IS Lucie - repreating the mistake with Callas everyone's saying "if only someone filmed her as... " and now they do it all over again

  • Haha, Yes!

    neTrashko indeed.

  • wow, this production is amazing.

Dessay is absolutly perfect, i think she is one of the best Lucias in all times

And the regie, costume, scenery (¿?) is divine

I need to see this production one day!
