@yoogeo1 First, I am not a christian, but I do have extensive knowledge of the bible. To be fair, there are over five hundred commandments in the old testament. The ten commandments can be viewed as the "Big ones" I suppose, but many other laws that are not mentioned in the ten commandments were very strictly enforced. Sexual misconduct such as pedophilia, rape, and bestiality was punishable by death.

Comfort asks Thunderf00t if different things are right or wrong but the thing is that different people have different morals. Is it ever right to kill someone? I don't think people are 'biologically tuned' to respond to authority figures. The majority of human societies that have ever existed have been non-authoritarian. We may be biologically tuned to respond to *social convention and necessity* as a form of authority, but if we are 'tuned' to respond to authority figures, it's not biological--it's by relatively recent social tuning.

@shantih433 Well even in those societies parents or elders would be the equivalent of authority figures. The authority figure is more important for children, as if a child had no trust in their parents they wouldn't believe them when they said "keep away from snakes" and so would soon die out. So authority figures are important in such societies (even as alpha males) but the authority takes a different form rather than the white-coated doctor.

I gave him a similar scenario and my cousin atleast had the sheepish honesty to say that "yes as a matter of fact anything that god considers correct should be seen as correct". damn it frustrates me all this morality talk. First off, learn anything that Sam Harris has to say about morality and you'll see the outstanding point he makes. Anything that increases the suffering of human beings is wrong. Anything that lessens suffering is morally justified. Now obviously there is wiggle room there, but who wants an ABSOLUTE morality. Morals need to be dynamic, changing, and ever-expanding with new knowledge. With absolute morals you get fundamentalism and more suffering.

I am predisposed to being deceived, but I try and educate myself as to the methods of deception used and what my biases are. It's not possible to hold beliefs we know to be false though.
Oh to follow on from the previous discussion about pathological lying, I think psychopaths are a better illustration of people that should probably be separated from society at birth. Treated humanely, given some basic sustenance, but not left to their own devices without some radical neurosurgery.

Would God go against his moral character? He's not above getting virtuous virgins (well, young women) teen pregnant. His priests also get a virgin (Leviticus 21:13) He's also fairly concerned that daughters given up as slaves would not be manumitted as male slaves would (Exodus 21:7). It was more important that women were bartered with and kept pristine rather than treated as conscious beings. Distaste for paedophilia is modern, but God hates and loves the same things as us...

You are clearly under a misapprehension. To blindly follow, there would need to be very little to no evidence for whatever it is one is following. However, in the condition that one has an extraordinary amount of evidence supporting their claim, as well as a consus among the vast majority of experts in the fields of the study. It is no longer blind faith, it is, at the very least, acceptance due to analyitical observation and demonstrable experience.

@yoogeo1 First, I am not a christian, but I do have extensive knowledge of the bible. To be fair, there are over five hundred commandments in the old testament. The ten commandments can be viewed as the "Big ones" I suppose, but many other laws that are not mentioned in the ten commandments were very strictly enforced. Sexual misconduct such as pedophilia, rape, and bestiality was punishable by death.

I don't think people are 'biologically tuned' to respond to authority figures. The majority of human societies that have ever existed have been non-authoritarian. We may be biologically tuned to respond to *social convention and necessity* as a form of authority, but if we are 'tuned' to respond to authority figures, it's not biological--it's by relatively recent social tuning.
I like Thunderf00t, but I feel it's important to point out flaws in arguments, even those made by people I like.

The authority figure is more important for children, as if a child had no trust in their parents they wouldn't believe them when they said "keep away from snakes" and so would soon die out. Interesting obervation about the point you were making regarding if god accepted pedophilia (nice work by the way). I had a similar argument with a christian cousin. I gave him a similar scenario and my cousin atleast had the sheepish honesty to say that "yes as a matter of fact anything that god considers correct should be seen as correct". Pretty scary results when you stop thinking for yourself.

@achooothanks Taking that to its conclusion, why does he follow God's every word? Because he fears him. Essentially your cousin has admitted to being nothing but a coward.
Going beyond that though, how does your cousin know what God decrees as law? From a direct message? Or by a messenger? Surely your cousin understands the possibility (fact) that the "messengers" of God's law are actually manipulating (fabricating) it.

Yet they have this whole doublethink going on, in which they consider themselves righteous and chosen for following god, but I get what you are saying, and truly, if you cant stand up to authority (existent or not) to defend children for example, you are a coward. Regarding gods law, youre guess is as good as mine. The way I see it, add a little religion based on region, with some circular logic and bam, ppl believe this story

In addition, these theories/experiments are some of the most famous (and sometimes basic) experiments/theories around. Even when Tf00t explains them Comfort still appears to have little grasp on what point Tf00t is demonstrating to him.

damn it frustrates me all this morality talk. First off, learn anything that Sam Harris has to say about morality and you'll see the outstanding point he makes. Anything that increases the suffering of human beings is wrong. Anything that lessens suffering is morally justified. Now obviously there is wiggle room there, but who wants an ABSOLUTE morality. Morals need to be dynamic, changing, and ever-expanding with new knowledge. With absolute morals you get fundamentalism and more suffering.

Accualy - pederasty was basis of education in ancient Greece, Rome, Japan. We may not like it now but it was how it rolled back then. Moral Zeitgeist changed. We no longer beat woman for disobedience, we don't own slaves and we are not getting our asses raped to get education (at least not litterally ;)

As an atheist my morality comes from treat others how you want to be treated, this isn't just a Christian moral, it's the only way a society can work successfully. I question if morals which are there only for fear of punishment are really morals.

ah the ever present discussion betwen religious and scientific, its all a false, the believer dont listen to the unbeliever, as he knows, he dont go into the disussion to learn, but to teach. ie when the unbeliever climbs into the stream, he does so against the current. point is bible sat the world was flat, it said the sun revolved around earth. it said this and that. all have been disaproven, wtf, when did the bible turn into a scientific project, disprooove all and the rest is truth?

Doesn't Leviticus say that if you rape a girl you have to marry her?
Isn't there a biblical story about a guy whose male guest is wanted by the whole city. They come up to the front door of the guys house and say they want to "get to know him." Deciding he can't give away his male guest, he decides to hand his daughter to the licentious mob instead.
Seems to me that certain cultures at least 'were' okay with rape.

@xxcurlyafroxx The best thing is, some "books" in the bible later there's an almost exact replica of the story you just mentioned. I can't recall the story behind the other one, but it's almost word for word the same thing. The dialog is copy pasted, the only difference is that this time the host takes his guests' wife and throws her out to be raped. And she was raped till she died. Really amusing passage when you're thinking of their "loving god"!

They wanted to rape the two angels, and Lot being a God fearing Jew offered his young daughter up to the mob of men rather than be known by God and the Angels to have given up the Angelic visitors...
It honestly is one of the most disgraceful stories I've ever heard in the Old Testament.

The concept of 'Original Sin' is what Comfort is basing his premise on. The original Hebrew word meant merely 'mistake'. 'Original Sin' purports that all humans are born evil because Eve fed Adam fruit from the tree of knowledge. This is a story-based assumption used through history to keep guilty-feeling religious adherents under the control of religious leaders. It has no basis in PEARL. It is a psuedo-logical assertion that is nonetheless an effective tool used to control ignorant masses.
