  • For Stanhope's view on television, on television, in HQ

    /watch?v=HWBs1iWZchc&feature=related

  • Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television ... enjoyed reading it.

  • What's television? I heard my parents talking about it.

  • Did you film this from Youtube and upload it to Youtube? I think I hate you.

  • @ozena52 touché. And thank you.

  • ... he said on television.

  • Maybe this is arguable, but I do think Stanhope is continuing the message of Bill Hicks.

  • @VisceralMajesty Their views do have simularities in my opinion... I'm a big fan of both.

  • rofld this is film of youtube 0:07

  • He's should be on The Howard Stern show more often!!!!

  • I feel sorry for Doug. Such an angry man.

  • @torment3d i feel sorry for you for not being angry

  • @rodthepimp why would I want to be angry? Anger is a negative emotion derived from the very aspect that doug stanhope thinks he stands against - fear.

  • @torment3d that's the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. there is so much propagandic BS going on in this world. but most people simply can't see it. they just troll along like sheep not knowing that they're being taken advantage of. doug is angry for a reason. a reason most people don't have the balls and/or intelligence to acknowledge. So I say kudos for his anger for standing up against subconcious oppressors, media, government etc...

  • @rodthepimp if you think my statement is ridiculous then you know very little about the human mind. You can be angry at certain scenarios/situations without it emanating throughout your being, which it clearly does with Doug - which is why I feel sorry for him. Also, his anger clouds his judgment. He is an incredibly bias individual and doesn't seem to be able to see both sides of the fence at any one time. That is the problem with being so angry - it clouds you, it makes you blind.

  • @torment3d are you religious as well as self rightious?

  • @rodthepimp If that's your only response then this conversation is over.

  • @torment3d

did you consider Carlin angry? how about hicks? was he too, angry in your opinion?

  • @rodthepimp Carlin, very. Carlin got angrier and angrier as he got older. Hicks - no, not really. He knew shit was fucked up but I didn't think he was angry.

  • what's that classical song in the background? i love it

  • hes a g

  • hahaha. fuckin failing species

  • genius

  • name and version of the song playing in the background, i'we been looking for it since i heard it in that thunderfoot video several years ago

  • A lot of comedians have a hard time coping with life, or they just have lives that are difficult, whether it's substance abuse, depression, etc. Robin Williams, Richard Jenny come to mind, but I know there are many others.

  • Damn, I do the same thing ... only time I turn on the TV is to fall asleep. It's the only way I can do it (sleep)... that and vodka or wine ...

  • i wanna watch battle of the operas... wait... oh shit...

  • OMG I miss falling asleep and waking up the Hitler series on History... LOL

  • 2:28

  • Well he tells it how it is . That I think is allot of respect

  • What is hypocritical about bitching about life?

He notices what's wrong with the world and complains about it in a funny way... whiney, meybe, but not hypocritical.

If he tries to pass an anti-drug legislature, THAT would be hypocritical, but I think you should probably look up hypocritical first before you accuse someone of it...

  • i can't believe how shitty the TV here in europe is.

  • Yeah, but he's also promised to kill himself once he's out of material. Time will show ;-)

  • @umorsom Can you remember which piece of material he said this man?

If you have a spare moment... Cheers.

  • @THEGUVNOR91 About killing himself? Well, the 2008 tour he was trying to come up with the perfect way of ending his life. I booked him to Norway, where one suggested he superglue his hands to his face and then throw himself off a building with a rope around his neck. It would decapitate him, so when he landed he would be holding his head in his hands. Anyway, it's on his latest CD, "From Across the Street".

  • @umorsom Ah.. thanks re-listened to from across the street and heard it along with when he's tellin gthe story of the guy who killed himself after dougs show. great to listen to when you rat assed and don't have anything to live for lol cheers man all the best.

  • @THEGUVNOR91 Yeah, it's a great piece! Thanks, man!

  • @THEGUVNOR91 BTW: Fun-fact about the CD "From Across the Street": The album cover picture was taken outside the show I booked last year in Oslo, Norway. The technician responsible for the burning pram is my band's pyro technician. ;-)

  • It's not really hypocritical. That's like saying if you end up hating life, it was hypocritical to be born. Suicide is one way out... but Doug has made it clear there are things he enjoys, he's just progressively become more bitter as he has gotten older and that's normal. If you watch his hidden camera stuff from the 90's (some of it is on YT), it was much different and not bitter at all.

Perhaps Doug is just more jaded by life than you are at this point? And maybe he will eventually.

  • So everyone with a cynical outlook who sees that there's a lot of shit wrong with the world should kill themself? And leave us with what?

No good comics. No good cinema or music. You'd rather the world be the Disney channel?

  • I can tell you why he wouldnt kill himself. Because hes compelled by instinct to not blow his head off much in the same way hes instinctively compelled to fuck women hes not really interested in. It might be inherently hypocritical but i certainly dont see how you can claim "hes full of shit" and hopefully you will understand that our instinct drives us to do things that we would otherwise never do all the time. I mean, think before you speak really its not that hard to figure out.

  • @conorpacman

Point taken, but he's a comedian, his job is to make people laugh, and the best comedians who have ever lived have been bitchy complaining truth sayers. He sometimes tells the audience before he starts the show, to not take what he says too seriously, it's an act, it's entertainment.

I mean why call him bitter, just because he's talking about things that we all feel the same about, but won't say ourselves sometimes.

  • @conorpacman dude hes a grumpy bastard and even hes said himself that u shouldnt listen to them and why would he kill himself its the human race he hates not life

  • @conorpacman you think he's funny so wtf?

  • @conorpacman when did he say he wasnt a hypocrite?

  • @conorpacman its possible to hate and love simultaneously. Its not always one or the other, things are a little more complex than that.

  • @conorpacman

    > if you hate the 'glugs of humanity' so much why doesn't he [sic] just kill himself?

Mencken used to answer this sort of question by asking why people go to the zoo. Seeing others (such as yourself) behaving like crazy animals amused him sufficiently to make his life worth living.

  • @sdkee

    LOL.

  • @conorpacman Part of his shtick is that humanity is hypocritical, you don't get his whole point, you only wish to split hairs, therefore your opinion has NO FUCKING PLACE HERE. So go home and continue being a drone for the world bank. You make me fucking sick. I actually just vomited because of your bile.

  • @ElectricIndica420

If you look you'll notice that I posted that comment a year a go. It's nice to see it still makes zeitgiest viewers vomit. Chill out you tit.

  • Brilliant!

  • I love Stanhope! he nailed it on american idol

  • Only movies and games. Nothing on regular TV.

  • Only reason I have a TV is football and video games. The fact that there are football video games out there is ironic enough as it is, but even moreso than that, I don't even play them that much.

  • i love t.v but not reality shows, why would i watch someone elses life, nobody in this world is interesting enough to watch, sitcoms are great

  • Most people I know that are into reality shows started off with horrified fascination. Perfect example is Flavor of love. I admit I watched way more of that shit than is healthy, only because of the recurring thought of "wait, are these dirty whores trying to fuck this dried out raisin for real?" .

  • yeah thats usually why people love reality shows, its like watching a scripted movie but its with real people with real emotions, i like sitcoms, my favorite is the office, and entourage

  • I wouldn't go so far as to call the people real. I think there may be a small portion of people who watch it because they perceive the drama to be more genuine than a written show or whatever, but they are in the minority. Most people watch that shit because it makes us feel superior. You know, like "Oh my job might suck but at least I'm not trying to blow Brett Michaels in the back of a dirty bus".

  • True, lol

  • he's very right. But there is a few good shows on tv.

    Dexter and Californication are great.

and It's Always Sunny in Philly is the funniest show on tv right now,

  • Stanhope is sick, in all senses of the word...cali.

  • Did you fucking recording a youtube video with a camcorder then upload it to back to youtube?

  • hehe yeah. Was in a hotel room far away from home, saw Charlie Brookers Screenwipe S3E1P3 on YouTube. Thought the Stanhope excerpt was genious so wanted to get it some attention. It wasn't on YouTube as a standalone bit at the time, and I didn't then know how to download the thing. Hence the result.

  • Love Doug!

  • Beethoven's 7th Symphony 2nd movement is somberly raaaaging in the background. Fuck yes, how fitting.

  • I watch TV just to hate what I'm watching , very logical

  • Haven't had a tv in 2 years n i don't know shit about the crappy shows. It's great..

  • @ZqweBSname Same here....erm, well I have a TV but I only use it for Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye.

  • @ZqweBSname I stopped watching TV about 5 years ago. I needed a new TV so I threw out my old one....and haven't got round getting a new one 5 years later.

When I go to the gym and watch the TV on the screens there, I realise I'm not missing anything!

  • @ZqweBSname Spot on comment .. TV is for fucking old generation ... Documentaries were good but they are also on the internet for free. Well most of the things on tv you can find on the internet and watch them when ever you want.

  • hahah doug is the man dude makes me laugh

  • @keggerous

I'm not sure he said all this for the sake of comedy

  • It was so good I felt like a dick for watching it. lol

  • i know what mean, i did too!

  • I am gonna favourite this. Its so true, its exactly the problem. Plus the fact that it dissengages your ability to think outside the box as it projects someone elses imagination onto you rather than you learning to use your own ingenuity.

  • battle ... OF THE OPERAS!

  • Ever seen Geoff Darrow's and Frank Miller's "Hard Boiled" comic book? ...It's the best ever...

  • "Fucking Failing Species"

    ROTFLOL

  • i know dudes hardcore

  • I found out about Doug Stanhope from the episode of "screenwipe' by Charlie Brooker. I've been watching Stanhope these days.

  • Fuck yeah! Finally the first "real" thing I've heard in a long, long time. Our culture just seems dead anymore.

.... damn that was some good television though...

  • No not dead, just idle.

    We're a very apathetic generation.

  • If you're not living your life from your heart. If you're not making every single moment, every single minute of the hour, every single day of the week from your heart; you might as well be dead.

  • Comment removed

  • Sometimes you cant always do what you want to, life is complicated, sometimes you have to do what needs to be done.

  • Yeah, we're all sitting on our arses watching YouTube clips "from the heart".

  • @Dezaru

Then I guess the entire human race should just go extinct. Nobody is perfect, and at one time or another every single person has lacked genuineness and frankness.

  • @TheOtium

"If all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos.” - Edward O. Wilson, American Biologist.

  • Stanhope and Brooker. 2 people better than Jesus and 1000 times funnier.

  • @Clembo How stupid... If Jesus was real then these two are hardly stains on his loincloth.

  • Actually, I also watch more popular television just to hate the ideals and the culture the program stands for.

  • Wow, dark. Stanhope's the shit!

  • yea he is dark in a really weird way, he's like a realistic pessimistic. And he's not even upbeat about it, which is amazing. How many comedians really have the balls to not only be pessimistic but be dreary and dark about it?

  • we have a kind of battle of the operas in sweden, in fact i was at a comedy gig hosted for them

they got drunk and sang on the stage at the end of it. the funniest thing was they were fucking wasted and insane. drunk, screaming abusing the DJs and technicians, shouting at everyone, a bunch of idiots

my friend was co-host of it. he said they had to wait for these assholes to leave before they could pack up.

eventually a hotelworker came up and told them to get fuck off the stage

    haha

  • ya watch out for the dangerous opera guys

  • I only watch American Idol for the auditions (so that I could feel better about my own superiority over a bunch of cunts who think they can sing but really can't, but insist on their own delusion, just like religious people, they don't want to be proven wrong)

The show was never meant to be an intellectual curiosity. So I don't waste much of my time with it, waiting for someone to win. Nobody really succeeds from it. All the winner eventually get forgotten.

  • And I never heard of an American Idol winner nor contestant composing, writing, making a classic memorable song of such artistic and creative magnitude that it becomes timeless and immortal, and the person who wrote them forever remembered. People still listen to Led Zeppelin or Louis Armstrong. People only play Clay Aiken's songs for a few days, and then eventually people forget about him. Don't expect a Mozart or a John Lennon from American Idol. It's just a mediocre show for mediocre masses.

  • Oh yeah no one beats Jimi he was from another planet.

  • That's because the producers failed to take that into account.

That people don't really care much about a voice unless its Barbra Streisand or Gladys Knight brilliant. Someone like Kelly Clarkson is simply alright and she was one of the best from that show...

Its songwriting that people want, who was the last great songwriter that came around?

  • Lady Gaga >____>

  • the killers have great lyrics but theyre really the only mainstream act that i can think of who really writes awesome songs

  • yea great example, I agree

  • thanx. mostly if u wanna find great lyricists in modern music, you have 2 search thru underground artists that most ppl have prolly never heard of.

  • oh yea definitely.

  • could you tell me what makes you so much more superior than those people? Please be honest though, I would truly like to know your definition of superiority.

  • I was being sarcastic.

  • im pretty sure if you "CHANNEL SURF", your life is over.

  • haha 2:27

  • Stanhope is a philosopher.... he medicates his pain, but so does the rest of america....

  • I fucking hate American Idol, people just watching horrible ass singers, even the winners fucking suck.

  • ...fuckin failing species...just the fact that we even give a tiny shit about what we type and what's typed on this ridiculously addictive site proves his point

  • exactly

  • he's kinda like bill hicks, just without the hope.

  • He's brilliant. I hope more women give him blowjobs.

  • You`ve got to love a Genius Mind when they are Angry....because they really make sense of the insanity reality that we are exposed daily!

Thanks -BlackMatter009- for sharing this vid.

And thanks to ~UMORSOM~ for Uploading this

    Video! :)

  • yah, thx blackmatter009

    i don't watch tv

  • Oh man, I fukin love Stanhope. I could listen to this all day.

  • I think you mean

"I've seen more from this guy and now I know why he's so great."

Couldn't agree with you more there chum.

  • He says what people like to hear well, and then they get excited about this because they have an excuse to critisise others without doing anything themselves.

Hicks made an easy living out of pushing others into apathy and cynicism, Hope easily rides on this.

  • Hicks pushed people through to being cynics and critical of the systems we put all our faith on, and I know I can't speak for many, but for myself, that gave me a revolutionary idea of what the world should be like. Hicks really drove home that point of altruism, and I really stand by it, in mind and action.

These guys tear down the things around us so that we can build them back up ourselves A person is smart/peaceful, people are dumb/rabid. Hicks knew that, he counts on us to find that out.

  • I don't ever recall Stanhope openly stating how great he is.

I and many others however find him great.

  • Fucking failing species!

  • Amen.

  • hahhaha, I love him so much.

  • THE TRUTH!

  • So you give up?Is that why you make stupid comments on a stupid medium?

  • "yeah he's right I hate television... it's a good show" lol

  • doug stanhope is obviously a "rough around the edges" Bill Hicks, and I couldn't agree with him more. At least when I'm watching bullshit to pass the time here after I myself have worked my ass off and dream of my next goal, on youtube, I can choose the bullshit. There is hope for some of us, but not many.

  • i personally think most of doug's stuff is actually 10x more insightful than bill hicks ever was, though hicks was obviously a more polished stage presence. its just personal preference though.

  • I agree: The late/great Goat Boy is fine and more polished, but even still, I chould listen to Doug Stanhope's more dark humor all day long, and actually prefer him over Hicks now.

  • I can relate to them both so much - they are both such reassuring voices for me. I think that, while Bill is now gone, their material actually compliments each others and their ideas dovetail quite nicely. Just about covering everything I think on a regular basis. Long live Bill and Stan.

  • Indeed: Long live'em both!

  • Well, it's too late for Hicks to literally live long...

  • Actually, while his mortal coil is long rotted, and continues to rot, it makes no real difference as his memory and presence while here on Earth, continues to thrive and be talked about. So it makes no difference.

    Just my two cents.

  • did you think of that one all on your own, captain? are you an existentialist?

  • HE, IS, SO, FUCKING, RIGHT.

  • YOU, ARE, ALSO, RIGHT

  • "FUCKING FAILING SPECIES..."

Ha ha, that does deserve a comment.

  • I'm glad he pointed out the irony at the end because I was about to leave one of those annoying comments that goes "but he's on a tv show saying that tv is shit" - then somebody would comment on my comment and say "shut da fuk up fag u dont kno even nuttin go fuck yo dadda den ur bro in da ass"... You know...no?... ok then...

  • Boy, it's a good thing that didn't happen.

  • I know I'm ultra happy.

  • lol

  • i so much agree to this!

same way of thinking i guess, i also turn on the tv to go to sleep, which is scary in a way..

  • Do you have any idea how many people do that?

  • yeah i do, do you also know the psychological reason for the phenomenon?

  • But aren't you sitting on the computer doing the equivalent to watching a television show? Watching TV shows/clips THROUGH the Internet.

  • well lots of stuff i watch on the internet never aired and never will air on TV.

  • at least i get to choose it

  • Why would anyone want to spread this? Stanhope is a genious by far.

    but,

He thinks in ways only some can really understand.

people need there religious/controling beliefs to live there life by, because no one knows what the fuck there doing.

People want to be slaves. That takes away a sense of responsibility.

Its a dying breed, the free-thinkers.

    Spreading this would do nothing.

  • It would do everything

  • So, would you tell Rosa Parks to go to the back of the bus because being stubborn "would do nothing"?

  • It's about television, which originally is in the 4:3 format. ;-) But yes, it should have been in the correct aspect ration. This was something I did while I was reviewing a handy-cam, so it is just directly filmed off some other clip on YouTube. But I liked the segment so much, that I decided to put it out here.

  • would be a great video if shown in correct aspect ratio!

  • We laugh at the truth b/c it's the best option.

Option #1You don't see the truth b/c you're stupid and brain-washed or ignoring it by watching shit, taking shit, eating shit, buying shit. #2You see the truth when Stanhope, Hicks,Carlin etc. points it out.You just laugh and say, yup aint it the truth. Then it's back to option #1.#3You face the truth every day, as much as possible. Who does this? Not me.Not you. Thanks Doug, for reminding us of the truth. You fucking prick.

  • He couldn't have considered running for president in 08 if he wasnt born here

  • Good point lol i didnt think of that i think the reason i thought that was because in of his shows he claims to be canadian to piss of the crowd so...

  • This is a good one, and for Slipknot808 and everyone sle who thinks this kind of thing should be spread to the masses, I am specifically running my myspace for exactly that purpose with video features I change weekly and links and all that good stuff, it's just starting now but it's gonna get bigger and bigger, /orcamungos on myspace I've got a weekly Stanhope's Opinions as one of my features right now, I'll be adding more features and articles etc in the next few weeks.

  • No, Stanhope was born in Worcester, Massachusetts.

  • i third that motion

  • "Fucking failing species"

  • While he makes a good point about the weirdness of watching life instead of living it, reality TV is also a good sign of people becoming interested in being compassionate with real people instead of fictional characters. Sure they're also more interested in HATING ON real people instead of fictional characters, but overall it's about truth in reality, and compassion will win out if truth is sought.

  • reality tv is as fake as anything else

  • people just want to watch somebody whose life sucks more then theirs so they can continue with their mediocre existence.

  • What a great ending!!

  • Doug Stanhope should be heard by all of mankind.

  • agreed

  • Yeah, believe it or not, there are MANY Americans that are angry about the silly censorship that is imposed on us. "Free country" my ass...I certainly agree w/you about Dane Cook...his success should be baffling but it's just disapointing and shameful that that large a portion of the general public is that stupid. Wrestling fans I guess.....Cook is horrible. I'll have to check out Sadowitz...

  • Haha wrestling fans - that about sums it up! Yeh check out Sadowitz, but it might be too local humour for you to get it, shame really because the guys a genius (also one of the best magicians in the world too, sickening really bah).

  • It's not about America being free....you can buy his CDs and DVDs but the American public is sill run by the right wing christian voices....hypocrites of course...Personally I think Doug is the funniest and most intelligent comedian out there. He should be a huge star but his opinions challenge the bible thumpers and law makers (same thing) so he'll never be mainstream. I'm sure he is fine with that.

  • I saw him live in London a few months ago. I think like Bill Hicks he is pretty angry that there is so much censorship in the USA and has to come to the UK where we don't have the same censorship laws. I agree with you - Doug is my 2nd favourite comedian alive (after Jerry Sadowitz - not sure Americans would get his humour, no disrespect there) and just a shame that shit like Dane Cook et al get far more exposure ....

  • But how come most Americans haven't heard of him? Is it because America is not such a free country as you believe and his stuff can't be shown on mainstream tv?

  • Doug, you're one of the smartest, most honest, best human-beings to have ever lived. Seriously.

  • damn right sun
