From as far back as I was, I could feel the heat coming off of both his ramp pyro and the ring-post pyro. Believe me, this stuff is VERY hot, and Undertaker is lucky to have come out of that with no permanant damage.

Its simply far too dangerous to 'plan' pyro going off in somebody's face from close range. The pyro guy hit Kane's pyro by mistake, but he was supposed to hit Undertaker's. That is why flames come out of the ring post.

Also if it was planned, it would have been acknowledged by the commentators. Shawn Michaels reacts to it, but that is because he is in genuine shock. Immediately after reacting, notice the way that he changes the topic to something else.

What was supposed to happen here, was for the arena lights to come back on when Taker raises his hands when he stands on the ring steps, just like he always does and has for years. However, for some reason, the pyro guy set Kane's pyro set-up off. 'Taker had to be treated for some quite severe burns because of this. This must've really hurt and I've no idea how he just shook it off like that and got on with what he was meant to do. Badass.

Taker has a history of run ins with these pyro accidents/incidents. Apparently at WM 20, he was very close to being caught on fire when one of the druids did not lift one of the fireballs in time as Taker was walking forward. Then of course there was this incident (which I don't recall happening but obviously it happened), as well as the Elimination Chamber accident. He also had trouble lighting a match at the April 1997 In Your House to 'burn' Paul Bearer. Taker vs fire in a steel cage!!
