Oh my god, what a pity!!! So sad for this!!! I'm italian and I saw him the first time when he came to perform with the Taraf in Pesaro. He was the charismatic leader of the band. I remember him very well. He was great!!!

Quel public lamentable. En éoutant une musique pareille l'on ne peut que faire des bonds et applaudir à tout va. J'imagine assez le Lyons Club local ou un truc du genre. Je conseille à tout le monde le documentaire " when the road bends", sur la tournée américaine de 5 groupes Roms du monde entier dont les Tarafs en 2005. Génial. Même si Nicolae en est mort. Regardez et vous comprendrez.

To legrandchene: They are also called Taraful de la Clejani ( the taraf from Clejani - Clejani is their native village in south Romania) and also they are called Lautarii de la Clejani Lautar in romanian means fiddler

Les classicos des quatuors à cordes et les professeurs de violon, alto... des conservatoires, qui se torturent les méninges à chercher comment interpréter Bela Bartok et être moderne, feraient bien de s'inspirer de ces musiciens-là. Rythmique, danse, tempo tout est bon. C'est un peu campagnard, mais musical au possible.Bravo!

I believe the "academic" sound and Bartok, or Enescu (whom I praise for their genius), all came long after and (at least in part) due to "gipsy" or "folk" sound. Indeed, if not for Bartok or Enescu, probably the contemporary snobs would not "lower" their ear to these treasures. I on the other hand raise my hat to those who still play them.

They are not out of tune - folk music is based on modes and microintervals. Which is different to scales. Enescu and Bartok used them as well.
