notice how there isn't much smoke? these were used during WW2 in Finland and northern Europe, like where Belarus is. the reason is that the smoke and flickering flames would alert the enemy, this method forces the fire inside to reduce light and the enclosed space allows the smoke to burn too, no waste and no choking smoke :D
