Hahaha..this is the exact same thing us football players use as an aid to help learn to catch as well. Shows a lot of the sports similarities. Don't get me wrong, I'd probably like rugby if I could understand it in the slightest.
I have a question too. Why don't rugby players use gloves. Again with football, why not football gloves with padding and grip? For rainy/muddy games I can understand but what about in dry weather?

Ideally if you are looking to catch and pass then the finger tips will allow you to get it through your hands quicker.If you have the time and space (perhaps by standing a little deeper) the safer option would be to catch the ball and cradle in to your chest before passing. As the level of skill of the player increases so should the skill level of the catch and pass. Hope this helps
