I discovered them in the mountains of Montana when a radio DJ friend gave me a station copy of Black and White that the station would never play, but he knew I'd be interested because it was on black and white marbleized vinyl. (I collected colored vinyl-discovered Iggy Pop the same way when I found Kill City on green vinyl). Blew my little punk wannabe mind.
America should know of this great band, but for some reason, they weren't hardly played on American radio, except KROQ in Los Angeles, where I heard them.

There's a video of the Stranglers live at a festival which is very pyschedelic / naked people wondering about on stage etc - 70's / 80's - I think the song was Peaches - can anyone confirm? Cheers
Thanks guys I have not been back for a while, the info on TANK helped me get a copy of that great album Black and White..Goldstar62 you lucky bugger:-}
TANK was played at this gig, they even had a tank fire blanks during the track ..... You can see the actual tank at 0.56 just to the left of Hugh cornwell, look carefully and you can see some dude getting into it ! ..... it was loud and impressive ! ..... Oh yeah, and I can see me at 0.08 !
Is it my ancient imagination ??? I distincly remember before this brilliant album with Peaches came out I had a tape called TANK, does anyone know if I am dreaming?
, it would have been say 1977 perhaps i
t was a cassette and called TANK by the Stranglers??
Twat comment. Stranglers were well ahead of the times. Doors, although, great and innovative could never hold a shadow to Stranglers. Get a grip itnow.
well mister backtofuture, 'wild child' of Doors for example which sounds quite like 'Peaches' of Stranglers was written 10 years before...how do u call ahead of ahead of the times in english?
calum , the connection I feel is certainly not in the lyrics or the actual notes of the song... but in the musical mood it has with a strong riff sustained by organ
In my mind peaches has always reminded me of 'wild child' but it could be because english is not my first language , so my attention was not directed through the lyrics...
the Stranglers considered The Doors to be their greatest influence. on another note, the Stranglers were formed 3 years AFTER Jim Morrison passed away.
I bought Rattus Norvetticus and a Blockheads album at the local cash converters for less than two quid. Both were in flawless condition. Really pleased I forked out:)
typical inter band stuff. jj burnell phoned him up last year after 17 years not talking to ask him out for a pint and cornwell said "we should leave things as they are" and hung up. basically, cornwell's a bitter twat.
Cornwell was on the receiving end of Burnel's fists a few times over the years. I guess he'd just had enough of being bullied. Cornwell should swallow his pride and rejoin the band. Together they were a fantastic band, apart they are nothing.
Interesting seeing this today, I was at this gig when i was 16,
in those days we considered it a BIG gig, but if you look at the audience it's actually quite tame looking with only maybe a thousand or so ..... how things have changed, i still have the ticket, cost £5.50 and the support was Peter gabriel !
Still one of the best gigs I ever attended, even beats Foo Fighters at Wembley 2 weeks which i went to with my 16 year old Son !
I was also at the show - I can't believe how few people are there. Peter Gabriel was the support. Check out Nice n' Sleazy' I remember the strippers and the police taking them off stage!
Love this song.. just heard it last night in 'Sexy Beast' and had to learn to play it.. pretty simple but I fuct my index up in a gig last friday so it hurts like a bitch..
Hey peopleoids, I went to this gig in Battersea Park. It cost £4.00 to get in and it lasted 6 hours! As far as I remember Spizz Oil, Johnny Rubbish and the Skids were there as well as Peter Gabriel. I remember Johnny Rubbish got a party seven beer can ( that holds seven pints ) thrown at him and it hit him. He lefty the stage swearing. Then there was the strippers who came on during the Stranglers performance! First ones I ever saw and I must say I was impressed. Battersea park Sept 78 Oh yes.
Was born in sep 78, so was not able to see the clash live. This is a great vid but can`t get my head round how empty it is. Don`t think people at the time realised how important they would become. Love the band and Joe`s solo shit. John Graham Mellor R.I.P
Gabriel was pretty damn good ...... he had Tony Levin playing with him on stick bass, and Gabriel and the whole band had shaved heads, looked like a load of Bhuddists playing on stage ..... Spizz oil also supported ....
TRUE!!...Hugh is a one of a kind , and their best years may have been when he was in, but good luck to them, they carry on like true(badours)... JJ (Kick ass bassist!...not many better1) DAVE (along with Manzarek and John Lord, one of the great rock keyboardists)and JET (pumping ice cream vending rythm machine). Not many heroes better than this lot!

tank is the first track on their 1978 album Black and White. it could have been a single
NoFistBroham 2 years ago
I think I remember TANK was an EP, - 4 track single, 45rpm. Think it was around 1978 0r 9.
As for the earlier Door/Stranglers, - the connection is Dave Greenfield and Ray Manzerek in that their styles are similar. Walk on By is very RM.

leurbost80 3 years ago
well he was forced out of his own band apparently (dont really know their history) so doesn't he have a reason to be bitter?
accentaveyronnais 3 years ago
I think Hugh thought the band had had their day and wanted to do his own thing, to no real success.
JJ wanted to carry on, but it was the 80's and after Golden Brown (Heroin? Lol) there were no more really outrageous tunes to be had.
