according to the telegraph, this is the worst musical ever, and i can see why. just imagine poor stephen king sitting in his box, mortified beyond all reason. what happened when the carnage started and carrie slaughters her entire high school class? is there a break dance pause to the bloodshed or something? WAS there even any blood in this, a musical based on a novel wherein blood is the most prominent symbol?? did anyone actually enjoy this fantastically weak clown show??
OMG! I just found this article where Stephen King gave his opinion on the show! He says: "I liked it a lot. In fact, I liked it for most of the reasons that Frank Rich did not. He and I saw the same show. We just drew different conclusions from different perspectives." He loved it!
I just think they didn't really have the technology at the time to properly do a play about telekinesis. Since they couldn't move objects without it looking obvious, they used cheap lazer tricks instead. Which is sad cause this looks like it could have been really really wonderful.
The only good thing about this fiasco was Linzi Hately. EVERYTHING else about it was awful: the songs, the costumes, the dancing, everything. "Carrie, The Musical" is considered one of the most stupendous Broadway disasters of all time.
Ummm... actually, lots of people including myself think the mother-daughter numbers were kind of great, and Betty Buckley's performance was fabulous. I actually like a lot of the songs -- nice melodies, but terrible staging/choreography/costume decisions. It's a shame the producers chickened out and closed immediately, because it's possible it could've developed something of a cult following.
How bad was this show? Awesomly awful!...saw the original Stratford RSC production... don't kid yourselves there was anything good about it what so ever... RIP Carrie
I know that the broadway show was (supossedly) never filmed completely but is there anywhere that i can find Linzi and Betty Buckley sining this song completely? I've seen the song with barbra cook singing but i want to see the beautiful ms. Buckley sing it!
For a show that bombed, a lot of the songs were GOOD!
i think the only things bad about this musical is the staging, costumes, and the set. because the lyrics are good, you feel sorry for carrie. the acting is good too. Linzi Hately is the best carrie EVA!
-Some of the songs are ridiculously cheesy and don't belong in a horror musical.
-The choreography was hideous.
-The set looked like a hospital.
All in all, this just wasn't meant for a Broadway show. The story itself was pointless to begin with, and trying to make it a hit as a musical was stupid. (That said, Betty Buckley completely OWNED her role as Margaret).
Not really. The big budget spectacular "drama musicals" were a hit in the 90s, this kind of musical genre is all but dead these days, especially on Broadway. :-(
In other words, "Carrie" might have been ahead of its time in the 80s, but now it's hopeless out of date.
yea i guess your right, but what alot of people dont understand is that what those stage actors do is alot of work, and they still get crap for it, i live in memphis and i use to be in theater and this is how it pretty much works , we reahears for a ''month'' then the next month is when we actually do the production live.lol
In the book Carrie is appraising her body and comes to the conclusion that she's "thick through the middle but not THAT thick through the middle." She also mentions that she has pretty legs. In the book, Carrie is described as having a round face, dark blonde hair and dark eyes. She's not ugly by any means, but she's treated as though she is.
Because the beauty of this song was the exception, rather than the rule, when it came to the music and especially the blocking and choreography of this show.
Go to Linzi Hateley's official website and find the Carrie photo gallery. There's a link that will take you to a petition to release the theatrical rights to "Carrie." SIGN IT!
Carrie represents the outcast. It really has NOTHING to do with being "fat" or even thin, it is the girl who doesn't fit in in high school. Given the pressure to be skinny, I think the casting of a heavier actress is great! Thanks for posting the clip!
linzi hately just happened to be a lil bit podgy thats all, carrie was chubby in the book but everyone hated her as she was an outcast due to her religeous beliefs, in absolutly no version did carrie get bullied for being fat
I have the entire Stratford show on DVD. I wish I had the Broadway version...Betty Buckley was phenomal. But unfortunatly, Act II of the Broadway version seems to have been lost forever, except maybe a few people who might have it arent sharing (stupid dumbos).
@jnewmark41 She was unbelievable in this role!!! I so wish they didn't wait so long to remake the show because Marin doesn't have the high range Betty had in this show.
FYI: This is partial (and good quality) because it is from the B-Roll given to reviewers/press folk. Act One only exists on video because the actor who did it (not saying who :) got informed at intermission he had to take over a part so wasn't able to get to the flies to change tapes. Urban Legend has it that the "Not Since Carrie" scribe has a full version locked up somewhere (and won't trade it...except for the Holy Grail of I think the TV version of AGYG w/Ethel)
I really hate the trend in musicals of characters singing their motives and subtext at the audience. Maybe this is where it started (it certainly was off-the-charts in Les Miz). Feel free to engage each other.
Also you spend fifty bucks on a ticket for this and instead of a decent set you get to look at a dark stage?
I have the entire show from stratford upon avon, and willing to mail you a copy of a dvd, however, ther is yet no full recording of the broadway version
OMG THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I have a copy of the soundtrack and I've seen a fuzzy version of the show, but this is pretty good footage. Love Betty Buckley!
I have the video of act one from Broadway but would LOVE to have a copy of Act two. The London Production is on EBay every now and then and I hear the video quality is better than the Broadway one. I saw this on Broadway and will NEVER forget it.
I did a search online about 10 years ago and this guy had made a carrie the musical fan web page, and he sent me a video of Broadway Act one, but it had tons of bonus stuff, like the behind the scenes and reviews. In my opinion; its one of those shows that had a dynamite soundtrack but terrible directing & choreography.
Like Seussical or Annie (a revival that failed due to its exaggerated musical numbers)

Was Betty Buckley Carrie's mother in the
musical? If so, it is ironic. Betty played
the gym teacher in the 1976 movie, and her
character took Carrie under her wing and was
nice to Carrie. Now, she was playing Carrie's
mother. Really weird.
