Back in the day when songs didn't have to be three and half minutes long.. In fact this song could have easily ended at 3:30 but instead we have an additional one minute long, beautifully atmospheric ending. Great and absolutely underrated songwriting.
Ese hermoso chico androgino y delicioso como un chocolate palido ... ES NICK RODHES?, y yo tanto tiempo mirando a Simon Le Bon, Nick es mil veces mas cercano a mi tipo de hombre..........
@mgparis Did you ever hear the song. Suzy Q? Listen to it and this is in the essence of it. It may be a Doors song. Would mix good. I love this song. And the whole Big Thing (cassette) yes that's right I said cassette.
è per un loro caro amico morto non si sa bene come. La versione ufficiale dice incidente d'auto.. Comunque sempre grandi i duran.... Vi ADORO!!!!!!! Monica
Only heard this for the first time the other day. Ain't stopped playing it since! I'm not a massive DD fan but there's a few tracks that for me, are just brilliant!
Awesome. Definitely one of D2's best songs and videos. There is something almost sinister about the video, especially when they meet in the room at the end..like they are part of some terrible secret...Or, they are just standing around looking pretty, it was the 80's after all. Seriously, Big Thing is their most overlooked album, amazing music and some of Simon's best lyrics
Dont make the mistake of thinking you must only listen to current music.Films are timeless in the same way music is.If it makes an impression on you it is even more relevent than when it was originally made.Listen to the lyrics of this song in particular!
Wow! That was just prior to the band releasing Pop Trash. You would've been getting into them right when they were just finishing up with everything Medazzaland. Amazing. You remind me of me in that sense because I became a fan in the shadows of Liberty and I was *almost* 12 at the time. I'm 28 now and I think I have every right to claim my spot in the Duran fan universe. We both rule the fan school, honey!
If you have been listening since 12 and your now 21 I can now be reasonably assured of the future generation! I first heard them in 1978 at the age of 12 and now at 43 it still sounds as fresh and new as ever! All the best, when you are 44 unwinding from a long day with a cocktail and a DD album, I will be a pensioner but still listening to Duran Duran (and enjoying a cocktail all day, ha ha).
Big Thing has some AMAZING songs on it. It is a VERY underrated album. "Shame", "All She Wants Is", "Land", "Too Late Marlene", "Edge of America", "Palomino" are fucking GREAT!!! Will you people give it a try? It is an album to kick back to in dim light with a fire crackling in your fireplace.
And the B-side of "Shame" a tune called "All I Need to Know" is one of their best B-sides next to "Secret Oktober".
Re: Your comments on Big Thing: I love you. Will you marry me and we can have awesome caek? Also, for mentioning the great song "I Believe/All I Need To Know", you win a thousand internets.
I agree with Zeggelbeer....While DD is one of my favorite bands of all time, they totally ripped off "Suzy Q" by Creedence...its as blatant as George Harrisons copying The Chiffons "He's So Fine" for his "My Sweet Lord"...to which The Chiffons sued...to this day, I'm surprised a lawsuit wasn't filed by CCR...never the less, this IS an awesome song...but my fave on the LP is "Land"...
LOL, actually the riff DD used was a very common blues riff. The "Suzy Q" ripoff allegations came from a very litigious team that was purporting to represent CCR at the time and even went so far as to sue John Fogerty himself for some reason or another. You know the legal team is f'ed up when they'll sue the dude who actually WROTE these songs. And, you know, John Fogerty had nothing at all to do with the lawsuit, so.
no, this is not just a common blues riff. This is a total lift of Suzie Q. Period. Great album, but this song is a rip. I hope they sent John Fogerty a check; he deserves it.
Dear tarheel, first of all John Fogerty had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LAWSUIT. He himself was even sued by the same legal team! Secondly, a website I remember visiting approx. 10 years ago pointed out that it WAS a common blues guitar progression and pointed out that the suit was only settled. This will be the same place I found out about Fogerty also being one of the targets of this lawsuit en masse, this time for daring to use the same riff he himself *did* write back in the CCR days.
Man, I need more time to listen to more of their songs but I'm already a fan. Already listened to about 20 of their songs. Not exactly sure. How did you become a Duranie?
The first time was in the 80s when a fellow at the high school made me listen to the first album (around 83). I couldn´t believe the modern sound, the crazy lyrics (as Anyone out there, Careless Memories or Nightboat) and the futuristic and bit pervertid and dark atmosphere of that first album.
Hmmm. Dr Mahogany (part-tme psychiatrist) in now in session.
Nick's really private. He's expressed support of gay pride, so if he had something to declare, I think he would have by now. Simon is pretty impressed by his success with the ladies. His ex-wife still speaks highly of him...he exudes plenty of sex appeal with women. So 'fess up, lovey...what makes YOU curious?
I'll never forget this video debut on MTV. Kurt Loder did a hate-filled news item about it and made some quip about how the title and "shame" were appropriate for the band. What a tool! It's nice to see that one of Duran's best videos and deepest songs has a life on YouTube. And does anyone these days even CARE what Kurt Loder is doing? I thought not.
Amazing....Dedicated to Simon and Nick's friends....The lyrics are pretty much Simon's favorite at the end...Do u believ in love,do u believe in life, cause i believe a little part of you inside of me will never die...
Actually, it's mostly dedicated to Alex Sadkin, one of the producers of their 1983 album Seven & The Ragged Tiger, who died in a car accident the year before the band released this album. It could've also been dedicated to Warhol since he died at about the same time and was close to the band, but it's still mostly Sadkin.
Thanks for the info- I was wondering who it was in regards to. The line "pointless waste" and "learn from your mistakes" makes me think it is for Warhol... could be a little for both, though.
You're welcome! "Pointless waste" could pertain to how soon Alex Sadkin left the earth. As for "learn from your mistakes"... well, maybe SLB was addressing the party responsible for the accident? Warhol died too soon as well, but he was older and his was due to medical negligence, so perhaps the "learn from your mistakes" could also pertain to that stupid nurse who overdosed him. But yeah, mostly Sadkin.
Don't know if you will get this - the song is about Simon's best friend who you see in the video, he died of a heroin overdose - hence the line pointless waste
It is one of their best songs ever , heartbreakingly beautiful, should have been a huge hit like ordinary world but was criminally neglected by radio stations
