Nobody was forced to sell any cars under cash for clunkers, there are still plenty of old cars around. Cars went under this program because the owners would get more money for them than if they had sold them privately or traded them without the incentive. The simple fact is these cars despite their good condition have little or no trade in value at ten years old. The owners are under no obligation to keep them forever so that somebody MAY want them for a few bucks decades later.
This has sold tons of Kia's and Hyundai's. Get over it. But, it does suck to see a Cadillac destroyed. OMG, I love Cadillacs. We all now get better gas mileage and, divorcing ourselves from decent cars boosted car sales like never before. Our car economy needed this boost, Fuck, save that cadillac horn. Google the sound.
Seems I cannot formulate an Opinion on this one. Anyways, I will be driving my 1990 Coupe Deville until the day the government throws me in jail for polluting the air with Carbon. To be fair to those who like first generation Chevy V8's, they are nearly infinitely rebuildable with a minimum of machine shop work, while a Northstar would need a whole lot of precision equipment. Also a Chevy 283, close to the Caddy's 4.6 litres, can match it's power with some common modifications, and be at least as reliable if it is balanced and blueprinted as well as a Northstar. The gas mileage might even be close if it had Arizona Speed & Marine sequential fuel injection.
The car sounded good and it seems a shame. Possibly it needed a $4000 transmission or had a mysterious coolant loss. People worship the first generation Chevy V8, but it's major advantage was it was cheap to build.The Northstar was one of the best engines ever built, but like anything had a maintenance schedule. The person who traded it in will have to live with his decision and experience the karma.

I'm not sure if any one realizes this but these cars that were "clunkers" were THE MOST RECYCLED consumer item in the world. This is because people would privately sell them and a teenager would drive the car to the ground or till it was totaled THEN it would go to a junk yard and be crushed and melted down and used for usage in another vehicle. Doing this means that a teenager or a lower class person who had the money to buy a "clunker" but not a new car no longer has that option.

@Xziau1 Absolutely. I sent my 98 deville to the wreckers in Novmber 2011. Everybody squaks about it, yet in the last 3 years I had it, repairs were close to 7 grand. If they want these cars preserved, they should scour the countryside or cruise the dealerships on Mondays and pick up as many of the "classics" as they can. But no, I should have kept mine, maintained, preserved and stored it just in case they might want to buy it for 2 cents on the dollar, or just to please them. Good Lord!
@SuperOffgrid I know how you feel. I can understand having small issues with a car, but the headgasket problem was too much for me to handle. I wasnt sure what I needed to replace, so I messed it up and gave it back to the dealership. My plan is to purchase another Northstar next year or earlier 2014. I will be graduating from college soon, so this time I want a warranty with my Northstar. I want atleast a 2009 or 2010 DTS

It sure as hell didn't help the environment, but it did help the economy, new car sales and used car demand is sky high. Mostly american made cars, because Japanese cars are in short demand because of the crisis in japan and lacking quality in recent Honda and Toyota products. Cash for Clunkers is by far the worst government program in history, in my opinion. We lost a lot of classic cars through this. Roadmasters, Caddys, Lincolns, Caprices, etc... Tremendously heartbreaking.
Try selling them first before CFC it, beside we got $6500 off of our Cadillac today, its a 2000 Escalade, that $2000 more than we would get off of CFC and our Ex Cady lives to take a highway again.

Also, what is the fuel economy of a 1998 Deville? It is an old car, and an old car is no good for a family. It is too unsafe, crappy, inefficient, and probably worn too. It is nothing but a nuisance they needed to replace with a new car. New cars are better. Anyway, the government should have lowered the maximum efficiency to maximize emission reduction by targeting inefficient cars more.

@Twexcom I apologize actually. I honestly don't remember saying that which really scares me. If you want to read the rest that's fine. If not I'm ok with it. I deserve it. Those cars didn't get great gas mileage. A friend of mine owned one and he averaged 11 miles per gallon around town. I'm not entirely sure how safe they were although I imagine they were death traps. I'd doubt that it was worn out at least mechanically because those motors were excellent. & I agree we need more efficient cars.
The objective of the CARS program was to boost new cars sales significantly (which it did successfully) and at the same time enable thousands of struggling people to finally upgrade to decent cars from the old rubbish they were stuck with which polluted the air too much anyway. That boost in sales was excellent because automobile manufacturers (especially the big 3) were struggling and about to go backrupt. No one told these people to turn in their cars, they are theirs to turn in if they want.
Vehicle maybe had 30,000 miles of trouble-free life left but thats probably it. I wouldn't touch a Cadillac with more 50k miles and wouldn't recommend anyone else do so either. P.S. I know 4 people personally that have these vehicles and all were POS when they hit around 100k miles.
@abram7117 Mine was a total money pit after 85,000 miles. over 7 grand spent on the damn thing past that point, a.c. quit, load leveling system leaked, then alternator fried, at which point it was parked. Would have been a bad deal for anybody who bought it used.
Please know the facts people. Nobody would trash a perfectly good Cadillac Deville with 79,000 miles on it. Cadillac Northstars are known to experience head gasket/headbolt problems. When a Cadillac Northstar blows its head gasket, the repair cost is 3-4 grand. Who is willing to spend that type of money on a car that is 13 or 14 years old.
Yeah last I heard on the news in the Netherlands it was 7.94 a gallon. That and I think Italy were the most expensive in Europe. Yeah it might not be a big deal for you but most ppl like high mpg's over there.

I beleive the idea is by giving people money (where I am its up to $3000) for their old car, (that has served them at least a decade) to encourage people to buy brand new vehicles to stimulate the economy. More people buying cars, more people working, more people making money etc etc. Only problem, with that 3 grand, the only cars people are buying are the ones coming from korea, and china.
This is sad. I have a 99 deville with 114,000 miles and runs extremely smooth and quiet. These cars were rated to get 18 mpg city and 26 highway. Mine gets 21 city and 30 highway. I understand that it was your job, but why did the gov't have this 30 mpg v8 tank blown up? What the hell is the problem with Obama? Its the worst program ever.

The second "goal" was to "aid the enviorment" by replacing old cars(which means using LOTS of resources and energy to build new cars to gain a few mpg) with new fuel efficent ones. Which is completley stupid. So, did it work. Yes- it boosted the economy and also No, I think it hurt the enviorment more then it helped.

@Xziau1 Absolutely. I sent my 98 deville to the wreckers in Novmber 2011. Everybody squaks about it, yet in the last 3 years I had it, repairs were close to 7 grand. If they want these cars preserved, they should scour the countryside or cruise the dealerships on Mondays and pick up as many of the "classics" as they can. But no, I should have kept mine, maintained, preserved and stored it just in case they might want to buy it for 2 cents on the dollar, or just to please them. Good Lord!

I wasnt sure what I needed to replace, so I messed it up and gave it back to the dealership. My plan is to purchase another Northstar next year or earlier 2014. I will be graduating from college soon, so this time I want a warranty with my Northstar. I want atleast a 2009 or 2010 DTS

Also, what is the fuel economy of a 1998 Deville? It is an old car, and an old car is no good for a family. It is too unsafe, crappy, inefficient, and probably worn too. It is nothing but a nuisance they needed to replace with a new car. New cars are better. Anyway, the government should have lowered the maximum efficiency to maximize emission reduction by targeting inefficient cars more.

@Twexcom I apologize actually. I honestly don't remember saying that which really scares me. If you want to read the rest that's fine. If not I'm ok with it. I deserve it. Those cars didn't get great gas mileage. A friend of mine owned one and he averaged 11 miles per gallon around town. I'm not entirely sure how safe they were although I imagine they were death traps. I'd doubt that it was worn out at least mechanically because those motors were excellent. & I agree we need more efficient cars.

The objective of the CARS program was to boost new cars sales significantly (which it did successfully) and at the same time enable thousands of struggling people to finally upgrade to decent cars from the old rubbish they were stuck with which polluted the air too much anyway. That boost in sales was excellent because automobile manufacturers (especially the big 3) were struggling and about to go backrupt. No one told these people to turn in their cars, they are theirs to turn in if they want.

Vehicle maybe had 30,000 miles of trouble-free life left but thats probably it. I wouldn't touch a Cadillac with more 50k miles and wouldn't recommend anyone else do so either. P.S. I know 4 people personally that have these vehicles and all were POS when they hit around 100k miles.

Please know the facts people. Nobody would trash a perfectly good Cadillac Deville with 79,000 miles on it. Cadillac Northstars are known to experience head gasket/headbolt problems. When a Cadillac Northstar blows its head gasket, the repair cost is 3-4 grand. Who is willing to spend that type of money on a car that is 13 or 14 years old.

Not cars under 100K. Ridiculous. Mustangs and Corvettes?? Take the top half of these cars and put them on income-based government auction. Recover a portion of the 3 billion dollars, and give the people that couldn't afford the program something cleaner and longer lasting than the dirty, rustbucket '80's vomit they're driving. This ultimately should have been the target demographic. It would give the lower income brackets a little stabilization amidst a terrible economy.

This is sad. I have a 99 deville with 114,000 miles and runs extremely smooth and quiet. These cars were rated to get 18 mpg city and 26 highway. Mine gets 21 city and 30 highway. @adrbro13 Just as a note, the MAIN intention of cash for clunkers was to give a much needed "boost" to the car companys and economy in general. Which It succeded very well in. The second "goal" was to "aid the enviorment" by replacing old cars(which means using LOTS of resources and energy to build new cars to gain a few mpg) with new fuel efficent ones. Which is completley stupid. So, did it work. Yes- it boosted the economy and also No, I think it hurt the enviorment more then it helped.

@adrbro13 That fucking car wasnt perfect. It probably had a blown head gasket and I refuse to believe your white ass would toss over 3 or 4 grand to pay for the repair. Shut the hell up...Make real money and buy a fucking decent car. This is not Obamas fault...What is President Bush responsible for? killing innocent people and raising gas prices. The car appears nice, but if it had a blown headgasket it was completely useless unless the owner is willing to pay 3 or 4 grand for the repair. @adrbro13 Naw you are immature...People can do whatever they want to do with their cars...If they want to trash it, they can....Its not for us to decide what people should do with their property... I had a Cadillac Deville just like the one above, but it had a blown headgasket...Guess what.....You cant drive them 30 miles without overheating the engine. I sent my car to cash for clunkers 2....I got a better car and thank goodness for that.

@adrbro13 I am just pointing out facts. Nobody said the car had a blown headgasket, but why else would someone send a perfectly good Deville to Cash for Clunkers? The car had to have serious problems or else the owner would have sold it or continued to drive it.
