I realized that with Independence Free, if you put the cursor over the top line of any beat of any drum sound, (the squares) an arrow will appear ponting up and down, if you left clikck and drag it up or down you change the velocity of each sound beat individually.
WARNING!! NOVICE!! ----> Okay, so I went to the site for independence free and I think I found the right link. I'm not exactly sure because it's all in German. What should i click on?
@PibbXtra08 Yes! At the bottom of the MIDI lines, there are drop down boxes for "Grid". Set it to "Triplet" instead of "Straight" and you can get triplets in there!
Hey just wanted to say thanks for posting. This is what youtube tutorials should be like! clear, well understood teaching with links. Love it. Cheers!
I also can't seem to get Independence Free to work properly. I followed your instructions, and, while Reaper is detecting other VSTs I've installed, it won't do the same for Independence Free. =/
@nccguitarist24 Try clearing the cache (in reaper) and re-scanning. And reaper will ask you to locate the root folder for Independence yellow tools, it should be C:\program files\yellow tools root folder. Then you have to go back to the website he lists and download the sound libraries for the drums and such.
Hi, just wanna ask i just recently download this thought i should giv it a try...i have amplitube 3 w/ stealth pedal and wen i try running it cudnt detect my output from amplitube.i already went through the audio devcie settings and still wont let me record with amplitube 3....does this mean i have to buy aanother midi interface like tascam?
@MILTZ Not quite sure since I don't use Amplitube. You might need to check which ASIO driver you're using, or make sure that the routing out of Amplitube is set up properly. Chances are you can find an answer on either the Amplitube or the Reaper forums. Sorry I couldn't do more!
@DoomScytheBand No, Reaper is not "free", but it allows you to use it in a free capacity to do everything that it does in a licensed capacity. Cockos (the creator of Reaper) believes in letting its users truly experience the program before purchasing a license. And yes, before you ask, I have purchased a license :-)
Cheers for a great video . I am new to all this pc stuff . First question when I download kontakt 4, do I have free libraries.also do I have to download libraries and install as separate installs. I installed kontakt went import got drop down menue but could not find any libraries . I did use garage band on mac it was great could just plug in midi lead and pick from list of 7 drum kits. I am using alesis dm5 pro midi in to my pc. with usb lead. cheers for any advice. pearlman
@pearlmanification I'm pretty sure you have to download and install the libraries separately. There should be info on the main page for Kontakt 4. It's not software I've really used too much, but I seem to remember the web site walking me through it.
dude, seriously...THANK YOU! This was extremely helpful in finding my way around midi in reaper. You ROCK! Also, thanks for the tips on the free instruments while I cut my teeth on sequencing.
@JimmyDeemo24 Should work the same was as through a MIDI connection. As mentioned below, check out wiki.cockos.com and search for "Recording MIDI." Good luck!
Another program to look at beside Independence Free is Kontakt 4 Player. It is free and has another free sound library that has some decent drum kits!
I can't seem to use my MIDI keyboard along with it. I have Independance free up and running like you do in the video but can I use the keyboard with it?
@benblue4 Yes, you can. If you check out wiki.cockos.com and search for "Recording MIDI" you can find a tutorial on setting up a MIDI device for a track. Just make sure that Independence is set up on the same track and you should be good to go!
I dont know whats up with this IndeFree site, I registered and went to the link in my email, and the site isnt allowing me to download. It keeps sending me back to the user login, HELP BUDDY!
@logikorganik I don't know what to say, buddy. It's not my site! You could try it in another day or two and hope they fixed the kinks.
There's another free program you could try called Kontakt 4 Player. YouTube won't let me direct link to it, but Google it and you can find it pretty easily on the Native Instruments page. It's free, and you can download a sound library that has some decent drums. Might work better for you.
They can and they can't. A lot depends on the sophistication of the program you're using, as well as how dedicated you are to making them sound real. Using small variations in timing and velocity can really go a long way towards making it sound good. The drum stuff in the video is not meant to be an example of how good virtual drums can sound, but rather a primer for how to get started using them.
@vikingguitar i like them its great if you can trigger them using an electric drum kit just ive always seen midi drums as being 100% digital and having a certain sound to them.. that was back in 2006 ive not touched midi drums for years haha, i am wrong sir! - btw... can you link these to external devices? it seems more visable for midi keyboards than the standard reason and ableton :D
I'm pretty sure that you can link them to external devices, but I really don't have any experience with that. I think you can find what you're looking for if you go to wiki.cockos.com and search for "Recording MIDI".
First time checking out reaper. Was looking for soundfont info, this is great start though and I really appreciated the info. Very usefully. Thanks man.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It's the first one I've found that really clearly steps through the concept of midi drums in some detail, and your wording is easily understood. Other people's tutorials have either generalized too much or made assumptions that I was familiar with the software or method.
3. during intallation he'l ask to search automatically for VST directory ==> press yes after that select C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins (or you can manually point to this dir)
4. unzip all Independence Free Content 01 up to 08 and copy them to the directory: C:\Program Files\Yellow Tools Root Folder\image files
5. when you open Reaper for the first time he'll ask you to point to yellow tools directory, you should select: C:\Program Files\Yellow Tools Root Folder\

Hi, I just installed Independence Free tool - have to say that it took very long time to download these files (it's 2G files and have to subscribe before downloading it)
anyway if you succeeded to download the files then follow the below instruction for installation:
Thanks for your answer. The problem is that Independence Free didn't install with any dll-files. There are none that I can find from the Root Folder, Application folder or even the Application Data folder that's user-spesific. So I'm pondering here... why does Independence Free install the dll-file for some but not everyone? Where did you download the file?
Dude... Reaper can't locate those Independence-files. What folder do I need to add or do I have to download some separate plug-in-file? I have the 2 GB instrument library, but I just figured that Reaper doesn't recognize the .ytif-files.
You're the second person that's mentioned this problem to me. I wasn't able to help the other guy, but maybe this will help in your situation. I would make sure to double check that the "Independence Free.dll" file is in a path that Reaper knows to look in. Find the file on your hard drive and then check the Options--->Preferences--->VST settings in Reaper to ensure that it's looking in that folder. If this doesn't work, the only thing I can think of is trying a reinstall.

@Ianuarius85 Ok, apparently you need to install the software first... then run the setup file again and this time custom select the vst stuff only and then when asked about the root folder I clicked cancel and then it asked where I wanted to install the .dll-file. Pretty strange but the only way I got it working.
