Why is everybody acting like this is the first time an artist has drawn inspiration from past works and worked them into their own stylings... Beyonce is not the first nor will she be the last to do this...and its not like she was trying to hide or deny that it was Anne's work when asked she said yes she drew from that and took parts from it
@qurpje97 hey maybe beyonce did a shitty thing by stealing but now this woma's work is being appreciated on an international scale! and i think anne's work is gorgeous!
You people are acting like Keersmaeker would have got less recognition if Beyoncé had, I don't know, asked permission first? It's a matter of principle and artistic courtesy from one creative mind to another. You have to ASK first, give her the chance to say no or yes about HER STUFF!
Honestly you guys, who cares? Beyonce is an international star, little to no people at all are going to care that she used this chicks work. At the end of the day, Beyonce is still famous and no one is going to give a damn that part of one of her videos came from this piece.
Beyonce did admit she referenced this choreographer for her video, so is it still plagiarism? isn't it the same when people reference old artists and designers to make new modern works?
@love2beat It's still plagiarism because she only admitted it after she was caught. :-P
It isn't. Not only was some of the choreography exactly the same as Keersmaeker, but Keersmaeker was alive and well and could've been asked about this whole thing. Like, Beyonce could've told her, "I love your work, can I pay tribute in my video?" ya know? But with dead artists, they can't really complain about you "copying them" haha
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker should thank beyonce for copying her choreography...LOLs ^_^...these videos are so cool..<3 and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker is also amazing <3
The piece is called Obsession from Violin Sonata No 2 by Eugène Ysaÿe. It is based on the main themes from Bach's Partita in E and the Renaissance Dies Irae chant.
How to look like you are an innovative artiste! The oldest trick in the book...rip off the fringe artists. The mainstream audience is too lazy and would never be so adventurous to know.
I'm familiar with anne's work (and other contemporary dance choreographers like Wim Vandekeybus and Sidi Larbi) and I know how her dance choreos look like, but I could never see the plagiarism because I don't listen or watch to lame artist as Beyonce.
@DerSongsurfer As an English major, I have to disagree with your use of the word "referencing." Firstly, when one does so, you don't use an ENTIRE TEXT & you add a citation at the end of your essays letting readers know WHO wrote it. Writer gets credit & you're not given an F for plagiarism! XD It's tough to say that Bey's citing the source of the textural material, since she didn't give the artist credit, but I fall short of calling the woman a plagiarist. She's a popstar. That's what they do.
@DerSongsurfer It would be referencing if it was only one part of the video and like, maybe 20 seconds at the most. It's like a movie that makes a throwaway star wars reference or has a character or two show up. It's another thing entire when a whole scene is being reenacted, word-for-word, nothing modified from the original script. That is insulting to not have asked permission, or better yet, ask Keersmaeker to choreograph something for her!
@cfoxnasty It was a source of inspiration. Do you think other music videos that have used other inspirations have credited all their inspirations at the end of the MVs? Example Madonna's Material Girl video, did they credit Gentlemen Prefer Blondes? No. Its up to the viewer wether they know the source of inspirations and wether they don't and when they don't, they normally don't care. But when its from an artist they hate, they say shit like the artist is copying.

sorry I didn't listen to it all. The whole 2nd Violin sonata of Eugène Ysaÿe is played then the solo etudes by Ligeti.

@mapple432 For me it's the other way around.

Beyoncé's Countdown obviously isn't plagiarism but referencing. Why can't people tell the difference?

Wow! In a way I'm glad Beyonce plagerised this because otherwise I don't know how I would've known about this awesome series of videos!

@HickeryHickery I agree. This woman's MUCH BETTER than Fosse. Too bad Bey didn't copy her sooner. XD
