  • To all of the naysayers: heros are the ones who show up and do - not the ones who stand back and watch. If you are the latter, you are pretty much useless to the former...

  • Horse and rider -- working as one. The horse uses his sure footing to find his way across. The rider gives the horse more weight to counteract the buoyancy of the water. No drama. All's well that ends well.

    I love horses.

  • I hope Traveler got a bunch of carrots after that effort.

  • How awesome!!! What a good horse. Saving lives and helping where no one else could. Now that is a good purpose!!!

  • @stephanieborrelli

Oh shut up. Horses have been used for such purposes for thousands of years....OMG a horse crossed a flooded street to deliver medication to sick people! How horrible! Why don't you focus your attention on more pressing issues...

  • i love it

  • my 16mo. old paint filly is wonderful too! love the paint's calm manner. nothing bothers them. cool horsey!!

  • The pinto, Traveler is so gentle, and calm on his mission to deliver medicines.

Horse and rider such a great pair, glad all went well!!

  • We owe the houses for so much; we wouldn't be where we are without them--

  • And this is why we still need horses.

  • That was pretty amazing to watch. My horse wouldn't have crossed that If I pulled him across with a truck. He was so calm about it too. Good ride. Now I have to look up Pinto. I have a registered Paint horse.

  • Terrific horse and wonderful horsemanship. Soft, quiet rider, calmly encouraging and being rewarded with steadiness and trust. Inspiring partnership.

  • so nice to se such good horsemanship, you have a good horse and Traveler has a good rider

    greetings from Denmark

    Pia

  • Those two are heroes. I hope to see them on the 6 o'clock getting proper recognition.

  • it's been over a week since this happened and I havn't had internet till today. So...What do I have to say about all ove this.? Thank you to Traveler, I love you, your my best friend and I couldn't have done it without you. I never ask you to do more then I think you can. and you never try to do more then I can handle either.

Trav & I have crossed many rivers togeather, Thank you all for your kind comments, & to the others, thank you for your concern for Trav's safty. BTW, not a Paint, a Pinto

  • I LOVE a good horse! You can see that this horse is not entirely comfortable with the situation, yet does the job because the rider has worked for the horse's respect, and in turn knows he can trust his mount! What a great team! Great horse and great training.

  • holy #$%^ the marlboro man

  • Awesome gesture by man and horse!! this is what needs to be on the news!! not all the BS we get on Hollywood ETC! Real People making Real News! got to get this out there!!! God Bless those in Vermont and the other areas effected by Irene- we dodged the bullet in Ocean City, NJ!

  • Kudos' to the horse & rider! We need these 2 featured in PEOPLE magazine!

  • Pure trust between both of thm!

  • So cool. What a good horse!

  • They are the Hero!!! esp the horse...

  • What a great thing to see. Props to the rider. That horse is a complete stud and deserves a medal..as well as several huge meals made by a 5-star chef :]

  • Does anyone know who they are? Horse and rider?

  • KUDOS to ALL involved. Love this horse and rider!!

  • It's Balto the horse!

  • absolutely amazing, way to go Vermont! I'm proud to be your neighbor!

  • Great Story. Reminds me of my brother Layne.

  • and the cowboy hat was white!!!!!!!!!

  • I hope that equine got some fine oats and molasses for that trip!

  • @rainkissedstars43 true. My dads got horses so i know there capable of this but if these are the only ways to get across something like that then we got problems. Cheers to the horse tho!

  • Frigin Awesome!!!! this is y I love horses...

  • And this is why I love horses. And animals in general.

  • Tears....

  • Horses have always been important in the lives of people, since time can remember. They will go through anything with you with their trust in you. Hats off to the horse and rider, you deserve the ribbon!

  • How 'bout we change the title of this wonderful video to "Horse, with guidance from rider, delivers medicine".

  • We need more men (and horses!) like this one. God Bless this pair.

  • Im actually in the background with the fire trucks. When you see the truck on the right leave we're going to check and see if the covored bridge is still where its suppose to be

  • I would love to meet this real cowboy, what a special kind of person it took to do this task, he is truly a Hero and of course his horse what a team they make. Now that is a true Vermonter helping out a neighbor in need!!! Blessed be to the Hero's of Vt.

  • Vermonters are doing what needs to be done to get thru this crisis. They're not sitting around waiting for the state or FEMA. Neighbors are helping neighbors and communities are coming together to fix roads and bridges so that emergency and utility crews can get in. I AM VERMONT STRONG.

  • this video just amazed me, this just proves you don't have to wear a uniform to help others in need and I am a National Guard member...he's a hero in my eye's

  • brave and trusting steed

  • Hope they gave both horse and rider extra treats!

  • what a stud....literally

  • That was great, seems like we should go back to some old fashion ways. They worked years ago. I am from NH. right on the boarder of VT. We do what we have to do. And we tend to take care of our own....

  • Im from/live in Vermont and idk why we arent using Jet-Ski's in these situations?

  • @Frogmanbb66 Because people would get swept under and die that way. The current is too strong.

  • What a nice horse!

  • Horse and human with a purpose...obviously a relationship built on trust, clarity and reciprocal understanding. I have no doubt, had the horse sensed danger under the water, the rider would have turned around and found a safer path. Both are heroes for calmly doing what they knew they could do!

  • Boy, that looks dangerous but he's willing to do it to help a neighbor.

  • "Vermont, the ‘Golden Rule State’: Vermonter’s are not angry at the weather, the washed out roads, the isolation, or the tremendous damage caused by the storm… Vermonter’s are angry they are stuck and can’t help more of their friends and neighbors repair those things. Some people say there is no good left in this world? Those people should visit Vermont.

  • Great Horse :) very brave and obviously trusts his/her rider!

  • That's a damn good horse right there. Nicely done, to both of that great team! No excitement or panic or drama. I ride my horse through rivers all the time, but none quite that flooded! I'm impressed!

  • I'm a registered veterinary technician, a horsewoman, and a respiratory therapist. Nothing wrong with asking your horse friend to cross that area. Clearly a very good horse -- plenty of sense. And certainly, nothing wrong in asking the horse to try it in order to help or save a human life. NOTHING. Kudos to the horse and the "walking dead" rider. And shame on those who criticized him for risking injury/lives in order to help others.

  • are you kidding me? why would you try this in a situation that is absolutely dangerous. that is what TLAER is for - trying to get animals out of silly situations that people get them into... unbelievable that he would try this. and a GREAT horse!

  • walking dead, the hat gave him away

  • What a brave and loyal horse!

  • @crstardust

I'm amazed at the bitterness in your message. It wasn't a sell. I'm not even a Paint Horse member. When they saw the video on facebook they asked. I tried to find out in hope the Paint community would help him since he had lost so much. Please redirect your energy to helping others rather then making bad assumptions about people's intentions.

  • @SnowyRiverFarm

No bitterness here toots...you missed the point...this is a HERO...never mind the breed or color or riders age or anything else about this....I do my bit ... am actively involved in horse rescues and volunteer my time in the local horse community..save you lecture for others....never fails, if you can make a buck off a horse's color...never mind the horse probably packs a good percentage of AQHA bloodlines, you'll go for it...I'm sure the community will take care of these two.

  • This brought tears to my eyes...thank you!

  • Wonderful horses .... they are there when we need them.

  • I think I would have waited a bout an hour to go back just to see if the water slowed down...then again I don't have much experience crossing fast moving water on my horse...so what do I know.

  • Calm, slow and steady gets 'er done!

  • Oh GOD! Don't let the APHA get a hold of the horse! They support slaughter of these beautiful animals!

  • Does anyone know who the horse and rider are in the video? The American Paint Horse Association would like to know.

    Thanks!

  • @SnowyRiverFarm

Save the "sell" point for another time....how cheesy......these two are heros...saving some lives.....

  • This man riding the horse is a friend of my sister's and he did this wonderful act of kindness for people he didnt know after he himself has lost just about everything he owned as result of the storm. How dare people sit here and make criticizing comments at least he is doing something to help.. what have you done to help someone lately??

  • Great job horse and rider! What a beautiful act of kindness. Super team work that can only be accomplished by trust, patience and understanding. Well done!

  • power to the people and common sense

  • @spueakbrat: Perhaps this man did not want to spend an indeterminate amount of time stranded where ever he went. As for the chopper: there were A LOT of simultaneous emergencies all over the place, Vermont and neighboring states. There weren't always available choppers and boat available. That's the nature of emergencies.

  • The other issue being: the horse may have very good footing, but that is null and void if a log or something gets swept up and knocks into them. Who would take the chance twice?

  • I don't understand why he would risk himself and the horse to cross BACK? Why not stay safe on the other side til the water recedes? Just because he did it once and made it, doesn't mean he will get back, esp. if the water get stronger? And I second the comment of, why not send a chopper?

  • @squeakbrat aperolling had it right, choppers in Vermont aren't necessarily always "at the ready", there were multiple areas in the north and south of Vermont that had flooding, bridges out, etc. There might not have been a perfect place to land a medical helicopter in the area. It seemed that even with the water flowing as it was, that they went slow enough to make it across safely. It might have been flowing more than normal, obviously, but the water wasn't choppy.

  • bravo

  • why not use a chopper?

  • GREAT job cowboy...and mount!!!! God bless the American horse!

  • @cecigw, that is funny that you throw "American horse!" in there. You do realize that Europeans brought the horse to American right?

  • @TheMdolittle So? This is an American horse. This breed was developed in America. The association that represent the breed is called the AMERICAN Paint Horse Association. It is the 2nd largest breed registry in - uh, America!

  • @Rickandcody He was using it to deliver medicine, dont be an idiot.

  • @Rickandcody

You are being very ignorant. This guy is bringing medical supplies to a town that is COMPLETELY cut off from the outside world.

  • I don't think the "horseback rider" could have pulled it off without the horse.

  • That was great! Thank you to the rider, never identified, and to the horse, also not identified, for a great example of humanitarian effort.

  • Too dangerous. Not wise to cross the river when you can't see the road. He's lucky he made it and didn't kill himself and the horse. Brave yes.

  • @wdrumheller2000 <<< Little do you know, that horses are very good swimmers. So if the water got to deep, the horse would swim to safety.

    BitsNspurs

  • My Dad and brother are on the other side in the rescue vehicles. They were stuck there for hours. The man on the horse delivered to medication to my mother and I, and we brought it to the fire station for the person to pick up. I'm glad the man was there willing to help deliver to each side.

  • @DeniseAndFriends glad that you got your meds - and what an awesome horse and rider to do this for you. We were over in Lake Placid on holiday - where they got hit abit with flooding - but like what hit Vermont! I figure I'm lucky - I'm a diabetic - and had enough to keep me going in meds for at least 3 weeks if I was careful and in a situation like you are. Hoping that things get fixed up before winter sets in.

  • @FatCatAnna Oh it wasn't us who needed the medication. I'm not sure what type of medication it was but the person needed it badly enough to call us (the firestation) to bring it to them asap. I've heard from people around town that some bridges won't be fixed until next summer because there just isn't enough time.

  • hi there~ you stopped the video before he got all the way back across, assuming he made it safely!

  • This is what it means to be a Vermonter. Using whatever means necessary to help.

  • WOW,outstanding act of bravery on both their parts,so dangerous, the rider trusts his horse enough 2 put his lif in his/her hooves. very impressive how he asks his mount 2 go 4 ward then leaves the horse pick his own pace,i 2 wish the news media would broadcast this, could watch it over & over!!! BRAVO!!!

  • There's really nothing more loyal and brave, and able, than a good horse. This one is something of a great horse, braving those waters like that, with such calm and grace. His rider, too, is quite a hero to risk so much to help others in need. Wish we had more like them.

  • @Shuricat I think they should BOTH be nominated for an award for what they did. Crossing that flooded river to do something so vital at such risk to themselves is EXACTLY what awards for bravery and honor are for, a way to give thanks to those who are selflessly willing to risk everything for others.

  • There are three houses that you can't see in this video. One on the left and two on the right. The house on the left has a dog, five cats and their owner. The man on the horse got the dog out and brought her to her owner. Luckly, despite minor flooding the house and all animals are ok.

The two on the right sustained worse damage but are hopefully salvagable.

  • @stephcottxc one of the houses on the right was mine, it was under a foot of water by the time this video was taken. I'm the rider on the horse, his name is Traveler.

  • @Travelerandfrisco i admire you for doing this

give traveler a hug and carrot for me :)

  • @Travelerandfrisco I love this video. Traveler look alot like my horse Dragon. Great Job! Horses love to jobs and you gave a very important job to save lives. And as far as the woman saying this isn't a natural river scenario. She's correct, these are not rapids and alot safer. Thank you!

  • Wow, good horse and brave rider too! Thanks to all my fellow Vermonters who are coming together to help one and other!

  • Wow, good horse!

  • "All in a day's work for our noble equine friends." (quote from a friend)

  • What a good horse! Ears up, ready to go! Looks like he enjoyed his job! That horse needs a medal. And the rider, way to go. Obviously knows what he's doing, letting the horse pick his way at his own pace. I would love it if a news station picked this up and did a lengthier human interest story with more info on the rider-horse team and who got the meds.

  • Very dangerous...what heros though!

  • And some pro slaughter people STILL want to claim, "There is NO difference between a cow/pig/horse" when it comes to slaughtering these endearing creatures. Rock on Cowboy Dude and your beautiful, loyal paint horse! :)

  • Yay! Good old horsepower! Gotta love it!

  • Why didn't the breath just use evaporate?

  • do we know what the medicine was needed for??? i LOVE it when horses save the day! last year when we got hit by a big ice storm, the city shut down for a week, and people near my horseback riding trainer's house were using their horses to go to the stores!

  • @silversunrise321

The rider was delivering a first aid kit and medical supplies just in case someone needed it on the otherside.

  • Wow, what a great horse!

  • what a great horse!

  • Clearly the rider is well connected with his horse and knew how to figure out the water flow...this could have been a disaster had there not been that connection and knowledge. What a GREAT horse...WOW! Super job.

  • Horse is very deliberate -- beautiful animal. There's an incredible relationship there.

  • @getyourleash The bond between horses and their owners is, immeasurable... how do I know, I own many!

    BitsNspurs

  • Great job! Great horse!

  • Horse and rider kept their cool throughout the entire ordeal! What an amazing gesture :)

  • Bravo to both horse and rider! Awesome ... also dangerous, that water is moving at a good clip. God bless them both. Also pretty cool that the town organized this effort. Anyone know if these 2 are part of a search and rescue team? This horse should be put up for an animal hero award. How many of your horses would cross this? Not mine!

  • Fantastic. Horse and rider are both heroes.

  • That's my friend!!!! Way to go man! We love you!!!

  • Sometimes old fashion is the only way to get things done good horse

  • @targapinewarrior hell yes

  • @Coopkid34 this guy has the right idea unlike that fuck eric cantor

  • Wow extremely impressive! :)

  • Yep... horses come through and save the day more times that most people would know or admit.

  • The courage of horses never fails to amaze me. They are so brave, trusting, and wonderful.

  • So nonchalant - love it.

  • well it looks like the water is not deep enough for motor and a row boat would have been taken downstream ..most sensable would be an airboat and I don't think their very much at hand in Vt.

  • Ok I applaud the fact the guy did this for another person, great that he did this. But why should he have had to? No one in Vermont owns a boat??

  • Wow - is there any way to find out if this was for a home care or a hospice patient - cause this is pretty awesome!

  • Absolutely wonderful, both are worth their weight in gold IMHO!

  • Amazing, dont see any Animal Rights nutjobs protesting the "abuse" of this horse.. I wonder if the person receiving the meds is an AR nutjob??? How cool would that be???/ ROFL.........

  • Beautiful act of kindness....

  • Tieri and Traveler. Good work! Great team! Proud to be a friend of yours.
