  • eccelsa esecuzione!

  • M. Caballé usually limited her voice to the top C; but exceptionally, when she felt in a good physical form, she interpoled shortly some D.

  • QUANDO MAI SENTIREMO CANTARE COSI' ............

    GRAZIE MONTSERRAT.

  • You'd think the BBC would have remastered this "Profiles in Music" by now! It's

pure magic...and still available, alas, with the counters. If it weren't for Onegin65's

generous sharing, I would never have known it existed. Thanks, Onegin 65, for

this and so many other fabulous performances.

  • "Only Caballé..."this is what Maria Callas is said to have answered when she was asked whom she would consider a worthy successor. I´m very proud about her words. I love Caballé and is a very honour that callas talks about Caballé with this respect.

  • What is there to discuss? This is absolutely exquisite singing by a diva in her prime. Lucrezia is her role.

  • Caballé mon amour. the best years 68-75la migliore di tutte: absolutely perfect. filati paradisiaci tecnica sopraffina ( Arangi Lombardi) best roles: Lucrezia, Caterina Cornaro, Imogene, Mathilde, Luisa Miller, Aida, Elisabetta.

  • Since they have opteed for Caballe it means that she can do some stuff better than others. And in this particular recording she definitely does and she sings a couple of tones above the C - check the score. Cheers!

  • This is gorgeous!

  • Utter perfection.

  • The most beautiful melody Donizetti ever composed , sung by the role's premiere exponent.

  • She sounds wonderful. :) I love this aria. Definitely better than Sutherlands. Allthough I'm a die hard Sutherland fan.

  • In this particular aria, Caballe wins hands down.

In the others (especially Era desso), Sutherland wins...

  • LA MEJOR!!!

  • Montserrat è semplicemente magnifica, regale, appassionata, dolcissima. Insomma: meravigliosa.

  • Simply beautiful. There are even some good trills in this aria.

  • Hermoso!!! Montserrat maestra de maestras

  • She was definitely a great singer but Devia is just as great if not better at times. Of course Devia was a better Lucia, for example

  • shut up.... you clearly know very little about music. twat.

  • I would try to say things in another way if I were you. Your comment doesn't say anything good about you.

  • Caballé is an opera legend, Devia will be just a footnote. Caballé for instance was THE Lucrezia of the last century and sang at the MET many times, Devia was only invited once.

  • And so? Met is the reference of talent?

  • Maria de Macchi is the only soprano ever to have sung Lucrezia Borgia at the Met.

  • Are you sure about that? About Devia, that is? In any case, both Devia and Caballé have exceptional talent. Devia may have a smaller voice but her technique is flawless, and she doesn't use all those portamenti like Caballé

  • "all those portamenti"

Those portamenti are correct. The voice is a portamento instrument. The music is written with the portamento in it, it simply must be rendered properly.

  • In fact! It's a matter of taste in the end. Portamenti are good when executed properly, as you say. Too much of anything, though, is not good, and Caballé overused the portamento. Furthermore, the portamento should be barely notieceable, which is certainly not the case here.

  • Comment removed

  • i think caballe is the greatest and i think devia is very good..but i agree with you..why do people have to be so harsh when expressing their opinions? they certainly dont care...(caballe and devia i mean..)

  • Devia sounds like a pipsqueek compared to Caballe...................

  • Your observation is so not correct that I wonder whether we refer to one and the same singer here. What does "couldnt go much higher than high C" mean? How was she able to sing parts like Lucia, Lucrezia, Elisabetta, Semiramida, Violetta, Norma, Mimi, Desdemona, which all have notes above the High C. Where you are right, howeverm is that she used to omit problematic places in liv eperformances - certain cadenzas that are more likely to lead to a slip. Shee could do that only because she was star

  • Thanks, hon, I am not a big Caballe fan, I simply like her. Honestly, I do not hear such pronounciation problems as you do, but then again, your ears seem to be more opened for mistakes. Your argument seem to be very general. I am going to refer to a very concrete one - her recording of Lucrezia with Verett and Kraus was done, well certainly not late in her career. It was supervised by Perlea and Luigi Ricci. The last two names are the most renowned opera conoissures in Italy.

  • The Lucrezia recording you refer to is truly exemplary.

  • It is actually right that Caballé had problems with anything above a high C, but everything before that high C sounds great! She took her liberties like many other great singers before her, like Callas, and Sutherland. Not all voices are provided with a rock solid top register, but are fantastic nonetheless. Your observations regarding the score and some mentioned high notes I can agree too. The score never lies! Very often the original melodyline don't go above a high C, usually only to a D.;)

  • She sang live a rock solid high D in Anna Bolena!

  • I don't doubt it. She probably could. I'm not saying she could not. But the very top register was not her strongest asset.

  • Do you think every singer could sing the higher not any day?

  • If I think every singer can sing the higher note any day? No. Absolutely not. If you are blessed with an easy top, yes, but even then, on the bad days, some choose to take the safe route. I have an easy top, so I always choose the higher notes when I can, but if I was sick, maybe I wouldn't.

  • If we would be talking about the lyric coloratura, high notes comes with the package. If they had no notes over the high C they wouldn't get any work... but for dramatic sopranos that is seldom the case. Some of us are lucky though and have an easy top. Most of us don't. I'm lucky. Even though the high notes above C are not the most impressive that Caballé possess, I will still claim that her sound in bel canto rep is of the most unearthly beauty. Her pianissimo is unsurpassed.

  • There's a canadian soprano I think her name is Othalie Graham or something. She has an outstandingly powerful voice in the Wagner rep. But I was amazed when a friend send me a recording of her singing live a very powerful high E in El paso, Texas. Do you know something about her?

By the way you're blessed to have those skills. I'd would be amazing to have a very good voice like yours!

  • There's a video of Madame Caballé singing a powerfull high D that I mentioned before. Why don't you look for it here in YouTube. I was impressed because I didn't knoe Montserrat could go higher than high C!

  • para eso estamos los demas jejeje!!!

  • she is the best ever.

No one sings belcanto like her.

    Nobody makes filatos like her...

    she's the best

  • She always leaves me speechless in this aria.

  • I love you Montserrat, your voice takes me to another world.

  • She never ceases to amaze. Wonderful

She never ceases to amaze. Wonderful!

  • Loved it. Caballé has the most beautiful voice of the lyric singing world.

  • Superb singing! One of Caballe's finest performances. Her piani are remarkable, as usual, and she conveys the meaning of the text and drama magnificently.

  • Rare record!

    Thank you!!!

  • Absolutely beatiful!

  • caballe and sutherland

  • Anyone knows if there's a "era desso il figlio mio" by her?

  • Caballe at her best! Her voice sounds beautiful, and fresh, her legato and coloratura are flawless, and( not surprisingly) her soft singing is ravishing.

  • thnx for posting, caballe is perfect as usual, very nice
