Since they have opteed for Caballe it means that she can do some stuff better than others. And in this particular recording she definitely does and she sings a couple of tones above the C - check the score. Cheers!
Caballé is an opera legend, Devia will be just a footnote. Caballé for instance was THE Lucrezia of the last century and sang at the MET many times, Devia was only invited once.
Are you sure about that? About Devia, that is? In any case, both Devia and Caballé have exceptional talent. Devia may have a smaller voice but her technique is flawless, and she doesn't use all those portamenti like Caballé
Those portamenti are correct. The voice is a portamento instrument. The music is written with the portamento in it, it simply must be rendered properly.
In fact! It's a matter of taste in the end. Portamenti are good when executed properly, as you say. Too much of anything, though, is not good, and Caballé overused the portamento. Furthermore, the portamento should be barely notieceable, which is certainly not the case here.
i think caballe is the greatest and i think devia is very good..but i agree with you..why do people have to be so harsh when expressing their opinions? they certainly dont care...(caballe and devia i mean..)

Size is one thing, technique is another. I could always here Devia in the theatre. Of course, Devia is a higher, lighter soprano, Caballé couldn't go much higher than high C, if I'm not mistaken. In here later years, Caballé had difficult with a B below high C. It's technique we're discussing here.
Your observation is so not correct that I wonder whether we refer to one and the same singer here. What does "couldnt go much higher than high C" mean? How was she able to sing parts like Lucia, Lucrezia, Elisabetta, Semiramida, Violetta, Norma, Mimi, Desdemona, which all have notes above the High C. Where you are right, howeverm is that she used to omit problematic places in liv eperformances - certain cadenzas that are more likely to lead to a slip. Shee could do that only because she was star

Honey, check it out for yourself. You don't seem to know the scores very well. I've got them in front of me! She recorded some roles too late, such as Lucia. And her pronunciation was quite bad at times, sacrificed so as to get through a high-lying passage. And like many other "great singers", she used rubato and sang the music as best suited her capabilities at the given time...Listen to her Le Villi aria in concert...I understand you're a big Caballé fan...Enjoy! Take care!
Thanks, hon, I am not a big Caballe fan, I simply like her. Honestly, I do not hear such pronounciation problems as you do, but then again, your ears seem to be more opened for mistakes. Your argument seem to be very general. I am going to refer to a very concrete one - her recording of Lucrezia with Verett and Kraus was done, well certainly not late in her career. It was supervised by Perlea and Luigi Ricci. The last two names are the most renowned opera conoissures in Italy.
It is actually right that Caballé had problems with anything above a high C, but everything before that high C sounds great! She took her liberties like many other great singers before her, like Callas, and Sutherland. Not all voices are provided with a rock solid top register, but are fantastic nonetheless. Your observations regarding the score and some mentioned high notes I can agree too. The score never lies! Very often the original melodyline don't go above a high C, usually only to a D.;)
If I think every singer can sing the higher note any day? No. Absolutely not. If you are blessed with an easy top, yes, but even then, on the bad days, some choose to take the safe route. I have an easy top, so I always choose the higher notes when I can, but if I was sick, maybe I wouldn't.
If we would be talking about the lyric coloratura, high notes comes with the package. If they had no notes over the high C they wouldn't get any work... but for dramatic sopranos that is seldom the case. Some of us are lucky though and have an easy top. Most of us don't. I'm lucky. Even though the high notes above C are not the most impressive that Caballé possess, I will still claim that her sound in bel canto rep is of the most unearthly beauty. Her pianissimo is unsurpassed.
There's a canadian soprano I think her name is Othalie Graham or something. She has an outstandingly powerful voice in the Wagner rep. But I was amazed when a friend send me a recording of her singing live a very powerful high E in El paso, Texas. Do you know something about her?
By the way you're blessed to have those skills. I'd would be amazing to have a very good voice like yours!
There's a video of Madame Caballé singing a powerfull high D that I mentioned before. Why don't you look for it here in YouTube. I was impressed because I didn't knoe Montserrat could go higher than high C!
I love you Montserrat, your voice takes me to another world. Te amo Montserrat tu voz me lleva a otro mundo, tienes un vibrato extraordinario, sumamente sutil que estremece cada rincón de mi ser!
Superb singing! One of Caballe's finest performances. Her piani are remarkable, as usual, and she conveys the meaning of the text and drama magnificently.
Caballe at her best! Her voice sounds beautiful, and fresh, her legato and coloratura are flawless, and( not surprisingly) her soft singing is ravishing.
there are 2 more videos of Lucrezia available, both with Dame Joan Sutherland. One for Sydney Opera while the other one comes from London. This second one is just great, Alfrdo Kraus is singing the role of Gennaro
yes, i've watched them. the London one is absolutely unbelievable, Sutherland is soooooo amasing there. actually what i was asking for is more videos of Caballe as Lucrezia. got any?
eccelsa esecuzione!

M. Caballé usually limited her voice to the top C; but exceptionally, when she felt in a good physical form, she interpoled shortly some D.
