The woman in the video is his wife. She was the daughter of the most famous conductor of his time, Toscanini. This video is from the mid-80's. Horowitz died in 1989. What a remarkable talent he had for playing his instrument!
at the end of the piece, that old lady looking @ him like: "you're lucky this is not 40 yrs ago, I'd have taken out all my PMS on you; now I'm too even play with myself."
yeah, wife, sick of hearing by now... just wants to go for coffee and talk his ear off... funny seeing him play in a living room... this clip makes him a bit more human...
When Vladimir Horowitz gets very old,he got flat big nose.OMG.I hope he could play Rachmaninov. The fastest pianist. It was hard to play.Nobody plays rachmaninov.Only Horowitz could play Rachmaninov. There's one person play rachmaninov.Only horowitz. He is the great pianist in the world. He could play it fast.
Anyone who doesn't like this either doesn't have ears, talent or is just jealous. Horowitz plays beautifully. And he puts the newer generation of piano players to shame...even at his age:-)
Most recordings and performances of this piece I hear sound so frantic. Without playing it any slower, Mr. Horowitz just has so much control and it shows. He makes even an etude sound so musical and beautiful.
I'm so proud that an American piano is the standard of quality all over the world. Although maybe his Steinway was from Germany. He is still an amazing musician.
@bolawarrior It's OBVIOUSLY a STEINWAY. I realized that when I saw the large STEINWAY LOGO. But you have no idea if it came from America or Germany. I've played many Steinways from both Germany and America and I can't say there is very much that differs. The main differences were in the voicing, some where deeper and dark and others were sweeter and brighter but both varied.
@bolawarrior Oh and as far as "Ask any famous pianist..." There are a lot that don't even use Steinway. Liberace used Baldwins, John Schmidt uses FAZIOLI, Countless artists use Yamaha, Young Chang, Kawai, and many others. Not every famous pianist uses Steinway.
i mean people like: argerich, horowitz, richter, ashkenazy, gould. pioneers
the REAL pianists. the KINGS for that matter. the ones everyone looks up on the internet because of almost all possible references that will lead to those.
@bolawarrior Okay be narrow minded and naive. Not my problem. There are countless GOOD pianists who don't use Steinway. In fact there are too many "GOOD" pianists to count because there are countless ones all over the world. Not all of them are famous though. It's a good piano company, but there are many out there that are just as great as Steinway if not better.
just,.... after the insults.... ok i get you don't see other p.o.v.
Imagine me being a random person on the internet, 20 years old, no music career whatsoever. I've seen wikipedia and youtube for all the piano music i like.
THEN you'll get to all those names like i mentioned before. And trust me, those 90pct DO matter.
i don't know if its a grude because steinway took over your piano-selling company? because if not, why the persistent opinion.
@bolawarrior I just don't understand why people think nothing is better than Steinway! Don't get me wrong, Steinways are very nice instruments, BUT, there are so many more out there any more that I cannot say Steinway is the best. I go to an all-Steinway university, but that doesn't change my opinion. If I had my choice of any piano, I wouldn't pick a Steinway. They are so passe and manufactured anymore. I might get a vintage Steinway, but I'd look more into Bosendorfers or Faziolis.
Just check out Valentina Lisitsa's rendition of this Etude and you'll understand what I meant by "very slight mistakes". She plays this absolutely flawlessly. But with a little less emotion.
Steinway, although you can hardly tell because of few bass notes. Most of the New York pianists used Steinway and they had very unique bass registers.
Duo Art I believe used Aeolean grands, and they did clean up the performances physically with the paper strips, much like they do with the digital performances nowadays.
