@DeanoTheLegend87 Yep, the FW07 was the absolute best ground effect car of the period, but you can thank the flat12 for all that torque available at the exit of Tarzan.
Villeneuve, a true legend, outook Jones on the outside of Tarzan, of all places.....He had balls of steel, really a supernatural driver along the lines of Senna, Jim Clark, these people show up on earth once every 20 years and even then....
jones was good but gilles was easily the most crowd pleasing driver of his era ,crazy with amazing car control, you know what they say there are bold drivers and old drivers but no old bold drivers r.i.p. gilles
"Gilles was the last great driver," Alain Prost said a year after the French-Canadian's death. "The rest of us are just a bunch of good professionals."
@ostryer61 "The duel with Gilles is something I'll never forget, my greatest souvenir in racing. He beat me, yes, and in France, but it didn't worry me...I knew I'd been beaten by the best driver in the world."
Please, compare the behaviour of Villeneuve and Arnoux in a duel, Dijon-Prenois, 1979, two FAIR pilots ... Closing the door shows lack of fair play ... remember the duel Andretti X Hunt, Zandvoort 1977 and the crash.
I think when Alan Jones saw GV is around him, he just let him by because the race is towards the end. If that is not Alan Jones, GV might be in the gravel
Great overtaking, the Tarzan corner is a briljant corner, along with the incredible fast 'Scheivlak' (the only corner on the world with it's own website!)
@Sebbio149 Crazy yes, overated no. He was overdriving the car too often, but he was still able to keep the car together: you need a lot of talents to do that in F1. The compromise is the norm in F1; it's a points championship so crashing out don't pay ;) Gilles Villeneuve was there only to win. This is why you see so many DNF with him and that his reputation seem overated for his result.
Don't get me wrong, Jones was a truth champion, just that Villeneuve was just another species.
@therrydicule It's difficult for anyone now who was never alive to understand why Villeneuve was so great. But you need to look no further than his opponents. Never has any driver in any form of motorsport gathered the respect and compliments from his rivals as Gilles did.
Everything he did was so on the edge, but he never put another driver in danger, blocked, squeezed or anything like that. Every driver that was ever on the track with him will tell you he was the fastest driver ever in F1.
@SuperColossal33 Well, I say the opponent opinion are subjective a bit... I prefer to look the race. It is true that he was on the edge, might even call that reckless. Then what? This is racing...
However, it is visible that he was respecting other driver. Even here: "Gilles" did not need that much rooms at 0:13, but I bet Jones was more than happy with that - I know that in online games, many trolls try similar overtake crash both car so I really like when they take that extra space.
I know, but in 1979 there were team orders only when scheckter was clearly favourite for the world championship....and I don't want to remember how sad was 1982 season...
Villeneuve was under team orders not to pass Scheckter. No orders and he would have been Champion in 79. One of the reasons he was so upset at San Marino in 82. He played the game when he was number two and when he became Ferrari's team leader he expected the same. Pironi passed Villeneuve on the last lap when they both were told to hold station to guarantee a 1-2 finish. Villenueve died at the next race.
Her was going to win 82, without a doubt. And I bet McLaren or Williams would have bagged him the second his contract with Ferrari ended, too. It would have been legendary seeing him, Senna and Mansell dancing around Monacco together.
He was apparently angry at Ferrari for favoring Pironi in 1982 and some evidence says Villeneuve was going to McLaren for 1983. Imagine him instead of Prost in the dominant McLaren-TAG of 1984-1985??
The real inside line was that Gilles would have been with Williams in '83. Ferrari always favored Gilles, and Enzo considered Gilles as a son. Pironi was just the prototype of what fills most professional fields today...an average driver with hefty corporate backing, and was brought on for his healthy infusion of sponsor money. Gilles made Pironi feel immediately at home at Ferrari, just to get backstabbed by Pironi at Imola.
I agree about Pironi. He was one of the most overrated drivers in the history of Formula 1. He was beaten by Jacques Laffite in his Ligier days.
A few years ago I read the top 100 list of all drivers of all time and they put Pironi ahead of Hakkinen. How could anybody place Pironi ahead of Hakkinen? Schumacher himself always said Hakkinen was the fastest of his rivals.
sad to think that everything that is beautiful in life is short

Cómo es que este "genio del volante"" no fue campeón del mundo?? Y algunos intrascendentes como Damon Hill o KK Rosberg sí lo fueron??

This overtake is made even better when you consider how superior the Williams was compaired to the Ferrari by that point of the season.
