please, can anyone tell me what he gives at first to the cat? (at 2.30) Is it cheese? (stupid question I know, but I have to write an essay about this scene)
If you like films like this, you should check out Thomas Muldoon's novel, SMOKING in BATHROOMS. The main character, Josh Dougherty, loves movies from the early 70's and he gives a visceral account of the United States that is romantic and truly unforgettable.
@NataschaO Ah, but the real mystery of the entire film is what happened to the cat? Read Ken Hillis' "Film Noir and the American Dream: The Dark Side of Enlightenment," and watch how the camera in this scene follows the cat. Instead of the people in the film being the ones searching for enlightenment, Marlowe's cat is. That is why Altman is a genius.
just saw this tonight i was so surprised to see Arnold Schwarzenegger as an extra thug without any lines but was equally shocked to see David Carradine (Kung Fu/Kill Bill) as the guy in jail with Elliott Gould such bizarre beginnings for those 2 actors wow in a movie that not a lot of people even heard of!
@nixsogutstudios I missspelled it with 3 words and common onomatopoeia for a mispronunciation of a word(da). Clearly it was on purpose, and if I had been talking about someone else I would have responded to PrizeFighter.
Gotta love Mr. Marlow. He stays in a penthouse with a cat. He's got sexy neighbors. And most of the time he mumbles to himself.

What a contrast to Robert Mitchum's Farewell my Lovely released two years later!
But that's Altmans genius and Elliot Gould's as well. Fuck convention!
This movie stands on it's own merit!
