how did you learn that 93% nitroglycerin and 7 % nitrocellulose are the right portions of each? trial and error or did someone teach you as well? did you make both at home on your own or did you buy them and combime them? very cool video. we are trying out alot of chem projects but this one seems a little harder (dangerous) than the others we have tryed and done. can you even make nitroglycerin at home? we know the cellulose can be but we are wondering about the nitro Joseph T fly2000jtb

Sorry bro but I think you just made ballistite. Gelignite requires saltpeter and wood pulp.

@Deathlordtwo well after reading the wikipedia article that you got your info off of, i dont believe it is either gelignite OR ballistite. WIkipedia states that gelignite is NG+NC+KNO3+wood pulp, while ballistite is NG+camphor+Collodion-(NC+ether­+alcohol) with the Collodion being equal to the amount of NG. My explosive is 93% NG+7% NC submersed in acetone and left to sit over the course of a few days until the acetone evaporates. i will include the word "Ballistite" in my title though...

If nitroglycerin makes contact with the human body, it could produce a violent headache. I wouldn't make any myself but this is an interesting video. That blasting gel could be useful in mining operations.

@Nguli34689 you have to basically be washing your hands in NG to get a violent headache lol. usually you just get head rushes from prolonged exposure. not that bad, besides kiddos we wear proper lab safty gear when handling energetic/dangerous compounds right?

I look at all of the possible hazards associated with handling energetic/dangerous compounds. I looked up adverse reactions in the Physician's Desk Reference for nitroglycerin. I was cautious when handling explosives myself while making mortars and rocket engines. I had to wear all cotton clothing and have no metal on myself for starters.

I liked this video because I thought that NG showed a potential as a cratering agent that could be used in mining by removing boulders for starters.

@Nguli34689 if you want to move boulders or other large chunks of earth, just use ANFO. NG is far to dangerous to be used in large quantities and has already been used in mining back in the day.

Well, 3% allows a more more malleable mass (generally) whilst still holding it's shape. 7% is just unnecessary and detrimental to density and everything else that entails.

Although in practice you wont see much difference in the way of performance.

um, i would say rougescience, but the man cracked down on that site about a year ago. i am fortunate to have the ENTIRE site saved somewhere. don't rely on anarchist's cookbook, but it makes an okay guide. when searching online don't use terms such as "how to make" use "synthesis". also dont use google. they keep records of what you search. use dogpile(dot)com

depends on what chemicals you have. i'd say TATP & ETN mixed together or TATP near the fuse and a fair amount of ETN between the TATP and Gel. if that doesn't work you made the Gel wrong somehow :(

you mix acetone with NG and NC and let sit for a few days until a gel is formed and the acetone is fully evaporated. You then have gelignite...

NG and NC are just mixed together an left to sit overnight. (it takes a while for the NC to break down, become clear, and form a thick paste)

I have always found NC dissolving in to NG troublesome without acetone. could you ellaborate some on the NC that you use. Is it homemade and if so do you use a similar nitration mix that you use for the NG. Is it tissue paper or cotton wool based NC?

gelignite still needs a blasting cap to detonate. i wouldn't mess around with any explosives made with gasoline, because gasoline is much differant than it was when the explosive was theorized. I have heard of a gasoline based explosive, but i also know it is obsolete. yes Ca(ClO)2 is an oxidizer, but i realy doubt it could be detonated, even with nitromethane instead of gas. if you want an explosive from an oxidizer and a feul stick to an ANFO type explosive.

Why didnt alfred nobel discover this earlier than dynamite. Nitrocellulose was common back then. ANd it forms such a stable explosive as you said right? Nitrocellulose was very common back then.

If you mix calcium hypochlorite, with gasoline, you will get a giant fireball, or a low velocity detonation, the mixture is self igniting, and very unstable..don't do it lol.

yeah, oxidizers can oxidize any type of fuel, I wouldn't be messing around with hypochlorites, you might end up with chlorine gas, especially when there are much better oxidizers like nitrates, perchlorates and chlorates.

I don't know how good an oxidizer sodium hypochlorite is. Chlorine gas won't kill you unless you have a very long , or concentrated exposure, it is still very bad for you though, I would use a gas mask.
