  • My dad was 15 when this came out

  • Yep, a 'live' version no doubt!

    Excellent, though!

  • a bit fast but who cares

  • also agree, jools is a twat and always will be

  • I saaw them at the country club in LA when they taped "Tempted" and at the Whiskey .... Jools asked for money to be thrown on stage . he was pelted with so much change lol the money was bouncing off everything. Should of asked for paper .. Glad Jools left anyway he was/is a TOOL.

  • Well I have to (Shamefully!) say that behind the chalet made my holiday! Although many moons ago!!!! Brilliant, thank you for it. XXX

  • who cares what the general public buys...they put out extremely smart catchy songs that put themselves in a distinct category with Kinks, Who, Queen, Springsteen, Clash, etc.

  • agreed!

  • Behind the chalet(with a bird!) the holidays complete.....i feel like william Tell(a Good Shot!!) shagging in the Dark, pulling mussells from a shell( Cuming!!) pukka lyrics...we have all been behind the chalet aint we? lol

  • SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME

  • They have got some classic 80's tracks but R&R hall of fame no chance in hell i don't even think they had an album go past number 20 even in there native UK

  • I see 5 young guys, happy to be alive and revelling in the glory that is rock and roll. Good find...

  • I remember listening to this on my song walkman on cassette! Man those were the days, great song, love this video

  • I love this performance and the intensity, but what the hell is this song about? They act like they're playing something really important but the lyrics read like bad fucking poetry. "Behind the chalet/The holiday's complete/And I feel like William Tell..." WTF?

I still love this performance. Difford bouncing around like his feet were on fire...

  • i think its about a young lad getting his end-away on an otherwise boring British seaside holiday!! ...but then again, iv'e got a dirty mind!!

  • great memorys from yesteryear

  • Hey Universal.

You could at least upload HQ stereo vids if you're going to make me watch a sausage advert.

If you don't give a crap about us, why should we spend money with you?

  • madness and squeeze in finsbury park.... the puppies testicales

  • hey isn't that puppphilia?

  • yeah they seem really good songwriters, and I think all of the members are great musicians, the drummer is good, as is glen, jools holland was amazing, there are some amazing bass lines. tbh, just a class act.

  • sorry, i just disagreed with you there by mistake! just to clarify! i agree. lol

  • oh did you? it didn';t show up, aha!

  • fantastic tune!! shame we cant spread the love by posting this on our blogs and on facebook...silly policy makes no sense

  • Saw them do this song as an opening act for Elvis Costello in early 1981. Great stuff!

  • Squeeze opening for Costello in '81. That's tough to beat.

  • The show I saw at that time was billed as "The English Mugs Tour" and Elvis did open that night but from what I gathered, the bands took turns opening on alternate nights.

Elvis did a lot of country music which was unfortunately not what his fans at the time were expecting and he received a less than first-rate response from the audience who strictly wanted to hear "Pump it Up" type stuff.

    Squeeze was dynamite.

Both bands got together on stage for the finale which was great.

  • Great stuff, Difford and Tillbrook are hugely underatted songwriters and Glen Tillbrook is a great guitarist

  • I agree and the bass player has some pretty good riffs as well

  • GT did an amazing guitar solo for "In The Heat Of The Night," in a great, eerie rendition sung by Jools Holland. It was a live concert at MSG in NY. You could tell he's no light weight.

  • Love this song! Great clip!!

  • Is it just me, or does the singer bear an uncanny resemblance to Jason Bateman?

  • I can see why you would think that but I don't really think he looks like.

  • i was thinking anthony michael hall. but now that you mention it, he does look like jason bateman, as well. he's a love child of the both of them.

  • Love this band and this was their best line-up. Jools on piano! As for the lyrics I always thought that pulling muscles from a shell was like making out. Sticking your tongue down your girlfriends throat kind of thing. They do have other great songs too.

  • So fucking tight.. They were great.

  • tempted was cool but i like this song+ annie get your gun and black coffee in bed better and ragtimefoxy you are so correct it is about the oyster!

  • I don't know. One story says that he's pulling muscles for Michelle, and that he's actually performing cunnilingus. And if you listen, he's not saying Pulling Mussels from *THE* Shell, he's either saying Pulling Mussels from *A* Shell or puling muscles for michelle. So it would seem that they tried to not let on that the lyrics were actually "pulling muscles for michelle" but failed. However, the singer said in one interview that it was about a trip he and his friend took when they were eleven.

  • You have to remember when this song was written and the writers' origins. They are singing about a quintessentially English seaside holiday of the 1960s & 70s. They would literally have eaten mussels from their shells on the Essex coast, but it make a good euphemism too!

  • the song is actually about "holiday nookie" at the seaside

  • Pure genius this song is.

  • Not really, they had a few hits.

  • "Tempted" was a bigger hit than this I think. It was at least another hit song

  • So if he's pulling muscles for Michelle, then what's the song about??? To me actually, the lyrics don't make sense either way, though I love the song. Anybody care to explain??? : (

  • He's wanking off obviously.. =\

  • They are AWESOME, look they are rockin out, jumpin around and havin a good time. Thats what its about

  • this song is about masturbation, isn't it?

  • no way dude , when i think of rock and rock, i think of led zeppilan, nirvanna, pink floyd, billy idol, queen, rolling stones and so many more before squeeze

  • Y'all can argue all you want, but it doesn't matter. Squeeze is probably second only to the Beatles in terms of songwriting skill.

Period. Go argue about taxes, Jackson's death, and so on.

    This case is closed.

  • Hang on mate...don't forget about XTC.

Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding have written some pretty good songs in their day.

  • Great song.

  • they play it so fast in this version, haha xD

  • i happen to like the song, not because its musically great or because the band is terrific. it sounds pleasant to me, its a crappy pop song but i happen to like it. w/e dudes

  • arguing on the internet is like running the special olympics guys, even if u win u are still retarted (no offense please its a joke)

  • I completely agree with packersfan080, I mean really, it isn't worth it to fight about something like this; who cares who likes it? If you do, leave a comment saying you do, and if you don't, leave a comment saying that you don't: and NOBODY question the other, or you get flamers like Raughwe and slowburner1. Remember, Kefka comes for those who aren't considerate of others, and this time, Terra won't save you!

    P.S. Try'n spread the peace, people! :P

  • I loove the she-e-el part :) haha

  • lmao raughwe. your real mature. coming on here and making comments about pissing in moms asshole. wow dude. what a winner. you obviously have no life at all.

  • slowburner1. your a idiot. you prolly have some shitty ass job.

  • hey losers, get a real job.

  • I work at Walgreens. This song is consistantly on. it drives me f-ing nuts

  • lolololol

  • Squeeze - Difford & Tillbrook - one of the most underrated band of the 80s. A great band - they sure don't write them like this anymore.

  • This song plays at Walgreens all the time and my co-workers and I laugh every time...we don't know what it means so i'm looking it up!

  • I'm sorry that you have to go through such torture at the store you work at. I work at a competing supermarket in the same area Walgreens does business and they play this same shitty song as well. I feel your pain, lol.

  • I heard this song for the 1st time ever the other day on XM radios The Coffee House, and I LOVE IT SOOO MUCH!!!

  • spot on live band SPOT ON! awesome.

  • lol trust me

    its just u dude hahaha

  • it make be just me, but it kind of sound like Jesus of Suburbia.

  • Harty-Har-Har!!! It's pretty much just you.

  • Haha, no, I can hear it now that you mention it. That's funny.

  • i really love all kinds of music - but there's a special joy to be had listening to the execution of a perfect pop song. groups like the Chills, Teenage Fanclub..and of course, SQUEEZE!!!

  • No way, Jason, this song plays at my work too and I enjoy it. Where do you work?

  • this plays at winn dixie all the time

  • Jason! How bout it, cumguzzler. You don't like Squeeze?!? Yet, no one cares what you think. What kind of shit is Bonitati? I peed in your mom's ass you mongoloid. And it felt great. Suicide, just consider it. You could finally be a success at something and it would make life for the other goons in your family easier.

  • Aww, are you mad because you like some sorry ass band like SQUEEZE; and don't know REAL music? And ok, tell me this: wtf is PULLING MUSSELS FROM THE SHELL??? Is this band retarded? It's nothing but pop garbage that probably took one studio session day to make. And who in the hell are you?? "Suicide, just consider it. You could finally be a success at something and it would make life for the other goons in your family easier." Dude, you're a joke.

  • This is my current favourite song. It's makes me wanna go back in time and have written it.

  • But behind the Chalet

    My holiday's complete

And I feel like William Tell

Maid Marian on her tiptoed feet

    Pulling mussels from a shell

  • Great song! Thanx for posting!!

  • this song is AMAZING. at 1:41...it just gets so good!

  • I want the drugs Chris Difford is taking.

  • thats too funny... he does seem abit HAPPY..LOL

  • I always thought it was...

    "Pulling muscles for Michelle"

  • LOL! :-D

  • ME TOOO yeahh, then i was like "something something william tell"

  • I saw Squeeze 6x's in the early 80'swhen they toured Argy Bargy-East Side Story&Sweets from a stranger Thats when they were at there best GREAT BAND!! Opening acts-R.E.M. Smithereens 10,000 Maniacs Replacements

  • I'm jealous. Never saw Squeeze live, but I did see Wall of Voodoo and Sparks.

  • You Lucky Bastard

  • Argy Bargy - THE classic new wave album. Non stop hits!!!

  • The way this song opens (after the taps for timing) is just so cool. Nothing, and suddenly it's all on the table.

  • I saw these dudes perform on the Uncle Floyd Show once. They were lip synching because the Uncle Floyd Show was low budget.

  • Anyone know what the guitarist and bass player are singing after the line "pulling muscles from a shell"? It's not on the album and I need to know. It's really bothering me. I can't figure it out. Need help. Please. must...help...me

  • They are singing 'seaside' at 0.45 and later on at around 1.35 'sea shell' and 'suntan lotion' at 3.11 can't really make out the last but something about a 'sandwich'

  • i think u need to get help

  • I agree

  • haha nice

  • Pretty damn good.

  • fall out boy are the same listen to 'thanks for all the mmrs'

  • the bass on this song is super fun to play :D

  • ooo look at me.. i play bass

  • i was just pointing out that it's a cool bass line..

  • im only joking pal.. i play bass too.. badly

  • no worries, i'm not good either [:

  • Wonderful song I just started recently listening to these guys.

  • The 80's! When music was incredible.

  • Glenn Tilbrook was such a baby-faced cutie pie.

  • This song never made billboards top 100

  • Love them!! Unbelievable!!

  • Awesome! Squeeze are legends

  • Saw Squeeze again recently in Austin Texas, boy do they still :have it:

Ist saw them in Liverpool in the late 80,s, great singalong band.

  • cant stop signing this song.. but thats ok it's a great tune

  • A friend asked me to see a show at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas in 1987. The headliner was Squeeze so I was all for that. She could care less for the headliner, she wanted to see the opening band whom I had never heard of...10,000 Maniacs. That was a great show!

  • Head Automatica covers this song

  • Argybargy and Cool For Cats are still among the few vinyl records I own. I used to DJ at a rock club in Vancouver in the late'70's and early '80's and played Squeeze religiously. The small non-disco crowd loved tham almost as much as I did and whenever the bar needed a surge, I'd spin "Cool For Cats" or "It's So Dirty" and minutes later the lineup for drinks was amazing. Squeeze remains one of my all time favorite bands and never fails to get me up and moving, drinking and carousing.

  • Squeeze was a college circit band that use to gig with Teanage head,Men without hats,The Spoons etc back in early 80's.

  • We saw Squeeze live opening for The Tubes in 1980something and left after Squeeze. The security people had to unlock the doors for us and felt obliged to tell us "the band" hadn´t yet played. Weren´t we cool back then ?

  • you have led an interesting life :)

  • ::pulls my mussell from it's shell::

  • I'm from the USA and I've always assumed "Pulling Mussels from a Shell" had some other meaning well-known to bBrits, probably sexual. Can anyone tell me?

  • it has no sexual meaning at all

  • I don't know if it is a british idiom, but the song is definitely filled with sexual innuendo.

  • Afternoon delight.

  • The original lyrics were (and if you listen closely) "pulling muscles for Michelle". If you listen to the chorus with this in mind you will realize why he is pulling muscles.

  • LOL!

  • Why Squeeze was not HUGE in the U.S. is beyond me.

I will NEVER figure that one out.

  • It was a time of British invasion!!! Not just U.S. everyone wanted to have the accent!!!Gary Numans music was way worse but still on the pop charts...It was just new and different.

  • I like when Chris Difford moves a funk, and how he looks.

  • I bought "Argy Bargy" on the advice of a friend in 1980. It took me two years to appreciate how great it was. I just wasn't ready for it in 80 for some reason. Great record.....great band.

  • We need this Squeeze song in Rock band, it would be loads of fun to play

  • 100% aggreed this song would be awesome in rock band

  • lyrics say it all.

Meeting girls in holiday camps and trying to cop off.Brilliant song by a superb band band.

  • the dress ordinary, yet produce extraordinary music.

  • hes jumping about lol

  • Squeeze owns.

  • Thank God I'm not the only one who thinks Jools is incomprehensible. Ferchrissakes he's only from London or thereabouts - by comparison I find Glaswegian easy to decipher :)

  • What is funny is that years ago VH-1 did a Behind The Music episode on Oasis and every time they had one of the Gallagher Brothers talking, they used subtitles so that the rest of the English speaking world could understand it.

  • This is a fucking incredible performance of a great song. Even though i don't understand a word that Jools Holland says nowadays i think he looks rather cool in this video =)

  • You too! I watch him on the "Later...with Jools Holland" re-runs and can barely understand what he is saying. He should come with subtitles. But can he play the piano or what?

  • Where's Chris Difford? You know "the other" guy who writes the lyric.

  • I think he's up there playing....

  • i was wondering the same thing... he usually sings backup in "behind the chalet" that part but not on this video.

  • Or, alternatively, YOU could fuck off and stop leeching off music lovers ! Ringtones ???? That's why music is so shite now, you retarded fuck weasel. Now then, off you fuck.

  • Looks funny to see Jools Holland so young at teh keyboards, they were great writers, talent like that belongs to another era..Cant beat good guitar pop..all that x-factor trash ahs killed misic.karaoke singers..My opinion only.

  • squeeze are amazing!!!!

  • This band is the reason I love pop music

  • Absolutely love this song, damn it!

  • Love Squeeze so much. Im a young'n but squeeze are legends. This and up the junction are my fav songs

  • agreed i proudly love squeeze....one of a handful of bands who could consititantly release songs that were superbly writen with masterful lyrics to match

  • SAME i <3 Up the junction

  • my dad got me into squeeze. how sad. i like up the junction the words are reyt good!

  • there's nothing sad about that

  • Still have these guys in my CD player in the car.

    Still sound amazing

  • Squeeze is one of those bands that came out of all the swirling-shite of the early 80's and can still hold it!!! They rock.

  • Saw these guys at their peak (early 80s) in Lexington, Kentucky. They were great, of course, although the sound system left something to be desired. If ever there was a band that deserved bigger sales, it was Squeeze.

  • please, does anyone know where i can get the piano music for this from. I've got the squeeze greatest hits book at home but it hasn't got the piano solo in it.

  • Jools Holland is God.

  • TILLBROOK A CLASS ACT WERES DIFFORD

  • what are they saying in the background vocals?

  • I was wondering the same thing.

  • seaside

  • splendorform,

this IS a weird arrangement as far as Chris's backup vocals go, with him not singing the whole chorus with Glenn.

  • ^

If you love the Squeeze..... check out Shy, seriously!! :)

    MR-SHY. COM

    .

  • mmm... not even on the same planet, sorry mate :)

  • where is Chris Difford?

  • I've wondered that myself...the boys are rockin' though! Awesome tune.

  • he's in the light blue jacket running around, what do you think?

  • Oh yeah-I think you're right! I just watched again closer...

  • sorry, it just didn't look like him....he's very.... animated.

  • This uptempo live version is tremendous! After paging back through all the comments, no one asked or stated where this was filmed. Do anyone know?
