She was a genius in making people laugh, I stated a long time ago on another thread that she could walk that tight rope between the funny and the sad. Comics just makes reality easier to swallow, they are just as needed as Pastors, Priests or Counselors. She really was gifted, I'm sure the hard way she grew up she had to see some humor in it in order to survive it. She passed on that blessing and God given talent for laughter to the rest of us. How wonderful is that?
Mickey had been working for Ed for five years and it was probably his first raise in all that time. I doubt that Eunice's food budget is that tight. Ed wouldn't eat "sawdust" and bread filled meatballs. Eunice is just being a selfish witch as usual. She treats Ed like dirt, then gets jealous when he finds a friend. And Thelma? Another hateful witch. The fruit didn't fall very far from the tree there.
@pjgumby I was just joking about Eunice being sexy....LOL. But I sure do love those old Mama's Family skits from The Carol Burnett Show. In fact I used to watch her show every Saturday night when I was a kid.
@pjgumby Oh, I know. Peace back at ya PJ. But seriously, I had read somewhere that Carol Burnett grew up in a really dysfunctional home. Both parents were alcoholics and she was raised for the most part by her grandmother. And she got a lot of the ideas for the Mama's Family skits from her own upbringing. Can you imagine parents like Ed and Eunice? LOL But Carol certainly was a comedic genius able to make a tough childhood look funny in some of her skits.
He's hard of hearing. He just turns his hearing aid off. That's part of the schtick. They insult him when he's right there but he doesn't actually hear them.
@katkountry10 Well, I don't know about Mickey being 'normal and sane'. I think it just looks that way because Mama, Eunice and Ed are outright bonkers....LOL.
Huh? I dont think I said Mickey was. He knows more about Chinese Food then Mama family! My grandfather on my mothers side throw away dumplings becuase they thought they were rat meat! they were stupid!
Mickey a simple soul?? He's a Stooge like a hundred thousand other guys and girls who are the butt of other peoples jokes all the time ,and don't even know it half the time. Hell if Mickey kept yellin at me I'ed go upside his head with a brick.....But Tim Conway does a wonderful job of reminding us Stooges are human too....(like we all aren't stooges at one time or anougher)
I do prefer the comic endings to the bittersweet ones. However, most of these comments are tired...attempting to psychoanalye a comedy sketch? Get a clue, people.
Thanks, Tabstarkin, for posting all these....some of the best TV acting in all of '70s TV.
What scares me the most is that i think Carol Burnett stole this whole scene from one of our family movies. The only difference is that Mama Harper is my Grandmother, i swear they are cloned.
I can understand Ed's fondness for Mickey. He's a simple soul and he idolizes Ed. Ed no doubt needs someone to shore up his ego, what with having to live the endlessly carping and criticizing Mama and Eunice. But Eunice is right; giving Mickey a raise when his family has so little? That's just wrong. But then ALL of these people are screw-ups big time.
It's a good thing Micky was oblivious to how they were treating him. Even after they were told that he insisted they be there, cause he like them, Thelma and Eunice still treated him like crap.
He should have gotten up and told Eunice off, and Thelma too actually. It was rude of them to act like that. But, that's just Thelma and Eunice.
Good episode and thanks for posting this and all the others too.
Had almost forgotten this one- excellent! It appears Mickey serves as the one person in whom Ed can find temporary refuge from his plight in life. Hmm I wonder (Eunice's insinuations aside) if the writers entertained some sort of suppressed homosexual subtext at play here, or is it just my imaginings?
No it isn't your imaginings. (About Ed and Mickey) in a manner of speaking, YES!
Many men are looking for that buddy bond--especially when having to live with a shrew of a wife and mother-in-law to boot.
Eunice's constant harangues and Mama's jibes make life Hell for Ed. He finds his Paradise oasis with Mickey. Mickey isn't married (nor ever has been) He has no lady friend. He has no children. Ed can be free during the moments he spends with Mickey who is a brother of the heart to Ed.
Yeah I posted on another board, I find it strange that Eunice would be so hateful to Mickey, I can see Mama treating him that way but it seems that Eunice would have had more sympathy for him.
So much for the blessing Mickey gave. How could anyone Mama's age only have tried chinese food once in her life. Poor dumb ole Mickey, he does't realize when he has been
dumped on by these two shrews. I would of thrown the box of dumplings right at Eunice, before letting her leave with the food. Love these skits.
