I knew there were people stationed down in Antarctica all throughout the polar winters but what I didn't know was that people actually were able to go outside. I always figured that everyone was on lockdown inside the compound all winter. Fascinating. I can't even imagine what -80 air feels like. I've been in -25 in Manitoba and thought I was going to freeze to death.

The first time, back in 1999, I worked for Antarctic Support Associates as a boiler Operator. The next two winters I worked as a Maintenance Specialist, that is about the civilian equivalent to a Navy UT .

I lived in Fairbanks,ak and the coldest I have seen there is -68 back in 1989. that cold air came all the way down to texas and florida, I believe Miami got down to 15 degrees, and dallas was in the single digits.
