  • Edit:.....right wing wave Rome created with the New Romantic bands.

  • certainly fits into the Jesuits drug agenda. Implicitly hint that cannabis could be the reason for the quality of your composing. Smoke a pipe of hasch and become world famous(subliminal message to young wannabe rockstars). When on the contrary supertalented composers with long education was hired by Rome to provide you with the Abba material. Maybe you were also this pilotproject, like Kate Bush, to see if people would jump on this right wing wave you created with New Romantic bands. We´ll see.

  • That introduction could, no kidding, be one of the tackiest I´ve ever heard. Ulvaeus acting is like below every possible level. Hmmmmmm, so with your insight and info, BU and BA you still were, one and a half years after her breakthrough, into maintaining this bluff and phony creation called Kate Bush. Very interesting, makes me all of a sudden question your entire production lads. That island you were on in Stockholms Skärgård when you composed

  • Back in the 1970's being able to lip sync believably was a must for a star. Viewers wanted the song to sound like the album version and budgets would not have allowed the expense of a full band and orchestra. Not to mention all the things that might go wrong in a variety show.

  • The best female performer of all time.....

  • I remember watching it at the time and thinking, did she really rub her bottom when she sang the line "He's too busy putting on vaseline" ... yep!

  • Comment removed

  • How cool is that being introduced by Benny and Bjorn....And huge Abba fan and of Kate Bush too.

  • Yeah, it does suck that most of her performances available are mimed, but she isn't to blame for that, as it was the standard music shows back then. At least she more than compensated for it by putting on memorable visual performances. I wish Britney Spears could perform like that, then maybe I'd excuse her lip-syncing.

  • Forget the lip synching stuff - she sang the original, goddammit, and it's breathtaking. I can barely walk and chew gum - she gives a dance performance live in this video that if anything is better than the official video.

Jeez, I think I may be in love.

  • For heavens' sake folks, it's an ABBA special! The whole thing is LIP SYCHED! God, give Kate a break and aim your comments at the show's producers!

  • che gnocca paurosa!!

  • wHAOOH .... what an artiste ... between her bridges...

  • She is not really singing, ok, but you see one of her concerts, and she has that headset so she could dance.... she actually can dance and sing perfectly at the same time, who does that now??

  • I actually saw this on tv. Remember it very well, although more than 30 years ago. I was a dedicated ABBA fan, but this lady had me on the spot. Her talent is beyond belief. Her music has been among the absolute most precious things in my life. Her music is in my head EVERY single day. Particularly love her first five albums, and yes, The Dreaming... masterpiece of the 20th Century. Hear, hear! And play it loud!

  • @pulloutthepin Same here. I saw this show on Canadian television--loving ABBA as I did--but it was Kate Bush who got into my head and still hasn't left after so many years. WOW! Unbelievable.

  • KATE BUSH IS KING!

  • sexiest genius ever

  • fuck the rock and roll hall of fame, she too good to be made into a dinosaur by them, and fuck american style:) anyone looking at a kate bush video obviously dont care much for it

  • Let's hope Kate can follow ABBA into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Let's be real, Kate is a long shot, very non American style. But so was ABBA and the fact that they finally got elected is a legitimate reason for hope.

  • Linda. Great performance.

  • can i just say that i really dont think she is singing live... is it just me?

  • It's definitely a lip sync.

Back when she started, there were no small, high quality wireless microphone packs to wear. That's why she had to invent the headset performance microphone for the Tour of Life (see the Hammersmith Odean videos for an example).

Most of her TV show appearances of that time lip-syncs - that was the standard at the time and there was no shame in it.

Now, of course, we have the technology and only those who can't actually sing lip sync (see: Simpson, Jessica).

  • you are right, i had forgotten of the headset that she had custom made in order to be able to do her shows, but, I think the value of any of her non-live performances is reduced due to the fact that she just has to pretend to be singing. Frankly, I could do the show just as well, if I didnt have to sing.

Therefore, problem is people who vue this as a masterpiece performance judge it with today's standards, ie forget that actually, she isnt singing.

  • As soon as she was able, she did live vocals. She does have the excuse that she was putting on a full performance at the time, rather than just standing there and singing. She sang live on SNL, and at the Tokyo Song Festival (where they hung a standard ball microphone from her neck and tried to hide it with a fabric flower).

  • Most tv performances are mimed - particularly in the late 70s and 80s.

Regardless of miming, you have to admit that her performance is brilliant. Her eyes, gestures and the way her body moved was so original at the time and still is. She was so mesmerising to watch and just oozed charisma - something that many top stars don't have. Plus unlike most solo female stars she wrote and constructed such original sounding material.

Face the facts dude, she was/is a genius.

  • she absolutely was and is a genius; one of my favourite artists for sure!

  • She was rather unusual for the time in just how often she would, and did sing live - like her live version of Wuthering heights on TOTP.

2 things people forget when they do the usual boring Youtube lip-sync debate is that we were only interested in SEEING our hero/ines because pre-internet/MTV you only got to see an artist in the flesh quite rarely. And secondly - on someone else's show, as here, they aint going to cover the cost of the musicians etc to fly over just for a 3 minute slot.

  • WOW!

    AMAZING!

    UNBELIEVABLE!

  • And at 1:13 - she signs 'Kate Bush' !

This video should come with a health warning - 'for those suffering with heart conditions, cynicism or self-obsession, this video might prove fatal'

  • actully, I think she write "amazing"

  • kate and david gilmore had an affair in the late 70's. david released a solo album during that time. i was in australia and am not sure where else it was released. but it was incredible. i am not sure what she did to him but he played better then, than he ever did. kate is so unique. so creative, it must have rubbed off. she is so beautful i can't understand why he didn't stay with her

  • Uh, there is absolutely NO proof that Kate and the much older Dave Gilmore ever had anything but a professional relationship. Kate was with her boyfriend Del Palmer at the time, and was until around the release of The Red Shoes.

  • A unique performance

  • 'Is it a bird, is it a plane, is it a tree?'.. 'no no no - its a bush' *cringe cringe* manners please gentlemen :-).

  • ...she's unique...not only by her voice, but by the fact that she does singing, dancing, and theatre all in one on the stage...wow is an understatement...this is a superb form of art...thanks Kate...you'll always be in my heart...

  • this is the hottest woman i have ever seen.........those eyes are.......wow!

  • She sure is!!!

  • LOVE IT. Awesome clip. Awesome performance. I can spend HOURS watching Kate's performances and videos once I get on a roll! lol. thanks for sharing this one :D Jess

  • so... i noticed the lack of mic... do you think she is lip syncing?

    good performance anyway.

  • She's definitely lip-syncing, but I think she recorded a new vocal. I tried to re-sync the audio from the CD, but it didn't match up. Remember, back then there were no tiny wireless microphones, and no headsets with good enough quality - until Kate invented it for the Tour of Life with her sound engineer Gordon "Gungi" Paterson.

So she could only hold a microphone in her hand, which would limit her dance.

  • She's so beautiful!

  • thank you so much for sharing, symphonyflowers!!! :)))

    Nordic

  • You're welcome!

  • I have learn at appreciate she here in YT!

    Thanks at Simphonyofflowers for sharing!

  • and the female viewer..

  • she knows how to use those big, stunning eyes to captivate the (male)viewer!

  • 1)she captivates me as well ;)- should I worry? ;)

    2) she knows how to use her voice and the whole body as well :)

  • man she's tasty

  • OMG! I just criticsised Kate Bush! MaY God forgive me! I've had her on a pedestal all of this time. Maybe if I accept her as a fellow human being rather than some idolised image, I'll get closer to the real Kate...

  • I think that her dance interpretations are always too literal, not imaginative enough. That said, I love this woman with all my heart and everything (well, at least as much as I see) and I forgive any cheesiness!

  • She is so amazing. So natural.!

  • WOW

  • man she so pretty

  • i loved this song

  • Great! My two biggest favourites, ABBA and Kate Bush on the same show! I had been waiting for this so thank you very much for posting it!

  • same here! i love them both. that's a great video.

  • Thank you for this clip. I'll never forget seeing this Kate Bush performance for the first time. It was broadcast on the CBC back in '79. Saw it the night I returned home to Detroit after seeing ABBA during its only North American tour. Kate Bush was breathtaking! Thanks, again.

  • I'm sorry, but I think you made a little mistake. I didn't post the video. I just commented on it. So it's KateBushvideos you should thank, not me.

  • I will see if I have a better version on DVD,I know of a better version but it has that rotten counter in the picture...Take care Menro ( you know me)

  • I can sometimes take two versions, one with a time code and one without, and combine them into one better version overlaying part of one picture over the other. My idea transfer medium is DV tape - I can read it in both NTSC and PAL and it doesn't have any MPEG loss. Maybe we can arrange a trade?

  • ABBA - KATE BUSH "WOW!!!!!!

  • unbelievable! Thanks

  • wow nice video

i agree with all the stuff that say bout her hehe

    looks lovely here
